Title: .338 Lapua Build
Post by: JJB11B on January 02, 2012, 02:50:29 AM: So I want to build a long range gun. I will be using it mostly to shoot wolves in Idaho. And Coyotes in Washington.
This is what I have come up with so far. I am dead set on the .338 Lapua

Surgeon 1581/R $1,770

Krieger or Hart Barrel (unless someone has a better suggestion) Threaded

McMillan Stock $650

Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 PMII $3,049

AAC Titan SS QD suppressor $1,195

AAC 90 Tooth .338 Muzzle Brake $275

I have no Idea if I should buy Badger Ordinance Rings or not, I also dont know what trigger I should use.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on January 02, 2012, 03:13:30 AM: Badger makes some great stuff. Use a few sets of there rings on some of my heavy magnums. You know when you break out a wrench instead of a allen wrench to lock the rings down, you got some holding power.

Most of you stuff looks good and if you shop around you can beat those prices you have listed.

I am not a lapua guy, shot them along side a few of my guns and don't really see anything special to me. My main long range gun is a 340wby. You look at the ballistics on it next to the lapua and they are very close.

A 338 edge is another great one. Little more pain in the butt but great ballistics are the pay back.

I am all jacked up! Nosler for 2012 is putting out a 300 grain accubond! That is going to be sick! With a monster bc! The 200g is my current load. The 300 might just replace it :tup:

One thing I'll disagree with Travis on is the 30" barrel. I'd go with a 25"-27" barrel, but thats mostly because I'm damn near a midget at 5'5".
Seekins bottom metal will get you 3.9+ easy.
Also Seekins is coming out with a muzzle brake that is effective and damn good looking.
That does bring up the QD v thread on suppressor argument.

Here is a picture of a coyote I shot with my Rbros built 338 Lapua using a 300 grain MK at 2700fps. She was on the run straight away at 311 yards

The Seekins DBM will be very difficult to get to work with that Surgeon Action also.

Post by: Biggerhammer on January 02, 2012, 09:06:04 PM: Obermeyer has perfected the .338 barrel 9.5 twist. Mine should be in anytime, other than brass there in no reason for me to go with the Lapua. I can build a Edge or a Ultra and do it quicker. I weight sort and match prep my brass anyway.

Post by: b23 on January 08, 2012, 09:58:48 PM: I'm a huge fan of BAT actions. IMO, they make the finest receiver money can buy but I also think Defiance makes an awesome receiver too. Defiance makes alot of the actions other shops have their name put on so they must be doing something right. BAT, Defiance, and Stiller in that order would be my picks. Certainly nothing wrong with Surgeon actions it's just that their 338Lapua action is crazy big, heavy, and more expensive.

Benchmark makes magical .338 barrels. Call Chris @ Benchmark and have a discussion on the weight you want it to be. They will make it a shooter.

Post by: Curly on April 21, 2015, 12:51:13 PM: According to the berger twist rate calculator link (http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/) , you could even use 10 twist and be able to stabilize a 300 grainer. Although 9.5 might be better.
