That crap is nasty... I have read that it is generated from the scales. So how do you get rid of it? I read you have to take the scales off the slime is gone. So what do you do or do you do anything?

I just skin them, they taste better that way anyway.

I just scrape the fish witht he back of the knife. It deslimes them and then i vacuum pack and freeze. Never had a problem.

I picked up an 8 in fillet knife at Costco. I need to sharpen it. I will eventually learn to use it. But how to you cut the skin off once you fellet the sides of the fish?

I have a 2x3 foot piece of UHMW that i skin my fish on. It does take time ot learn. I filet them, then lay skin side down. I go from the tail end of the filet and cut straight down about 1/2 inch into the meat then i i cut
or slide my knife down the filet, i cut where i do so i have something to hold on to when i am skinning them. I try not to move the knife, i try to pull the filet across the knife. That keeps the pressure from cutting the skin off, then it become a PITA.

Easiest way I have found to descale them is lay them on the grass and blast them with a hose starting at the tail working to the head. Good nosle =no more scales. Slime has never bothered me, but I always descale asap and that may be why.

Scale them and them rub some lemon juice on them......wash with water :tup:

Same here. I like to leave the skin on for a couple of reasons, one is it keeps at least one side from freezer burning when it gets lost in the freezer and two, when I grill, I start meat side down then flip so the skin side is down to finish. If the skin sticks to the grill, no big deal.
Also, sockeye do not work very well with this method. For some reason the scales seem to be adhered more strongly.

I skin all my salmon ...JUST LIKE STATED ABOVE.. Once you eat a salmon that has been skinned you will never eat it any other way ... just place on foil with butter on the bottom and season it the way you like :twocents:

I think I have an idea. I just need to find someone who can weld stainless steel for cheap.

It truly does make an incredible difference doesn't it? I noticed a big difference in the fish I've smoked as well.

I cannot descale them on my property because I live in a housing development. Wife and neighboors would not like that. So I am looking for something I can run off my truck where I park or some place I can make a mess.

We made scaling blocks out of a 3x4" block of 2x4 and nailed beer bottle caps to it. Scales come off real easy.

I skin all my fish, Bass, trout, salmon and generally use this method for cooking. Works like a charm and tastes amazing.

if you just want the slime gone so you can handle them use little nickle news paper, works like a charm just wipe them down a few times, otherwise spraying them from tail to head is the best way

I cannot descale them on my property because I live in a housing development. Wife and neighboors would not like that. So I am looking for something I can run off my truck where I park or some place I can make a mess.
We usually take care of the fish at the river before coming home. Keeps the mess out of the garbage can

Have you ever eaten panfish like blue gills or crappie? OMG, they are so much better tasting when eating the scaled filets with skin on than off! The skin adds quite a bit of flavor. I do not eat the skin of trout or salmon though.

I have never eating the skin of a steelhead or salmon. That is what I target when I fish most of the time when I fish these days.

Loki, same with sanddabs.... A light descaling, skin on, cook and eat. Wonderful.

De-scale them on your lawn. Does the grass good and it dont leave a mess. Youd be surprised at how many neighbors wanna be your friend when youre scaling fish.
