Title: Looking for hunting buddies!!!
Post by: Krustypuff on July 13, 2007, 11:50:57 AM

Hi all new to the forums, and must say they are great so far love some the pics. I am looking to start hunting and do not know a lot of hunters. I live in Everett Wash. I have gone out with some rel;etives but it always seems like it is a chore for them to take me out with them. So I am looking for a few peeps who might be looking for a hunting buddy or buddies. I enjoy shooting and being out in the woods when i can get out. My 2 year old daughter and work take most of my time. I just want to get out and get some great wild game for the freezer. I have been black bear hunting as well as deer hunting and only things i have got are a cold. Also looking to make a few new friends out of this also. Some things about me 32 male married with a beautiful daughter who take uop most my time. I enjoy shooting most all firearms and have quite a few my self. I am looking to start some squirrel hunting also. Looking to hunt most things that are legal to take. Hit me up guys if looking to chat. Thnx!!!!!

I used to live in the Marysville area after 20 years in Alaska.

I looked for fishing and hunting people while there and found that my wife was my best fishing mate and as far as hunting went I did it alone. I shotgun for birds and bow hunt for deer, so solo was a no brainer.

Be patient fish the salmon runs see if you can't make a friend on the rivers and that may lead to a friend during hunting season. People are reluctant to befriend people now-a-days for some reason and I can't put my finger on it. Back about 30 years ago I could meet a  at work, a party etc guy and suggest we go rock climbing in eastern Washington no problem now that does not fly except with a few and those people have become my best friends in the Lower 48. I've even been asked to send a resume' of my climbs to these self righteous butt heads.

Having a resume? Wow...

I do understand the point a bit though. I do not want any new hunting buddy until I see what they bring to the table. I am sick and tired of trying out a new guy, to find out he is not committed, has limited gear, or none, and I end up guiding his whole hunt for him. It used to always be my rig, my camper or tent, my everyting.

I actually enjoy solo hunting. If one of my buddies want to join in on any hunt, fine, see you there, and they beter prepare themselves for the outing. No more, "hey can I borrow...." or having them drink all my water..... No more free lunches. You know what I mean?

I have taken new guys many times, and most did turn out great, lasted a few years, moved to another city or state...this is ok. My longest lasting  hunting buddies and I go way back to college days. Even these relationships are tough to keep in good shape, but they have lasted. (I am done providing for them though...learned that lesson...better for them now too, they now actually prepare for the back country, no more relying on me for everything...)

Krustypuff, best bet may be the club, or maybe just hook up with someone for a short day trip or campout. There is no way you can spend a hunt with someone you do not actually get along with very well, and I would rather know before hunting season. Good Luck!

I found out a long time ago, that if I went hunting with someone, or even a friend, it was to be a social thing only, that there was no serious chance at bagging a trophy.  That way, I relaxed and wasn't worried about it.  I haven't met anyone with the same drive or passion I have.  My Dad has been the closest thing to a partner I have had, and we usually are on at least the same mountain somewhere, only to meet back at camp at night.  No pranks, no rattlesnakes in the sack.  All serious, with one goal in mind.  I think it works, at least in the point of how many trophies we have, or what we have seen throughout the years.  We are like minded, so it has worked out wonderfully.  There are a couple guys on here that I think are like minded.  I've enjoyed hunts with Fletch and his brother, as we are very similiar.  I think alot like Vek, almost scary, and Ridge is about to be adopted, eventhough he doesn't know it yet.   ;)

Bone, I know EXACTLY what you are saying. I grew up in Arizona and hunted with guys I grew up with. Every time I have asked them to come up to Alaska, Oregon or Washington to hunt I get an excuse or no reply. I don't think they can get past there egos. I am an avid bow hunter and usually hunt alone. My ex-brother-in-law, and his son-in-law wanted to get into bow hunting. I got them set up and took them out. I had the same 12 arrows for 4 years until last year and had to buy MYSELF 2 more dozen! They were VERY hard on my equipment. There are VERY few people I will hunt with seriously. Most don't have a clue about what is going on arround them or lack simple safety processes! I like to breath through the holes God gave me and DON'T need any more thank you. I would like to learn new things from new people, but I never expect anything to really come from it. If I had people arround me that were seriouse about safety and passionate about being in the boonies, then I would be right beside them. The outdoors should be shared, but those you share it with should have the same level of passion that you have and the same respect for the woods and animals they harvest.

Dittos shadow.

Here is one example of why I do not care to share my hunt with many guys....

First let me state that alot of my gear is old. Take the axe I bring to camp. I found this odd shaped double axe head laying on the floor of my grandfathers shop after he passed away. No handle, just a messed up very old double bit axe head, that had a bit of one blade missing, and also had been repaired with a really gross weld where the handle fits.  I spent many hours at home, filing, sanding, sharpening and preparing this axe for a new hickory handle. After a handle, I shot the whole axe with a clear coat of poly. Still a bit strange and ugly, this axe represented to me my grandfathers tough time he had in life. It represented some of my family history. It is not just an axe. It is special. I resurrected the damned thing, and my buddy has no problem ignoring my story and work, and abuses the thing, trying to split knotted rounds of wood, misses, and rock chips...  This axe represents my hunt, something that I have prepared for all year, to enjoy at that special time, and to have someone else destroy it, is unacceptable. To them it is simply an axe. "Simply hunting season, stop worrying about it..."

It is never simply hunting season.

The point of this story is to point out how special some trivial little thing about my hunt can be, and how careless others are about these things.

Things like, smoking, slamming truck doors, looking at your buddy and noticing he keeps "lasering" you with his rifle barrel, leaving trash laying around camp, too much radio talk, cooking while wearing my hunting clothes, not having ones own alarm clock, watch, compass, map, binocular, spotting scope.

When I whisper to a buddy, and he answers in a loud tone, he just doesn't get it. When a friend asks to use my binoculars, cause he doesn't have any, or his cost 20$ and are worthless, he just doesn't get it. When a buddy hasn't shot an entire box of ammo thru his gun in three years, he just doesn't get it.

It would be very hard to find someone who looks at the hunt thru my eyes. I spend time each day of the year thinking about the hunt. Many of you are probably much like me, or you wouldn't be reading this.

Most often I find myself biting my tongue, and thinking that maybe I do worry too much about this stuff. I have found that I enjoy my friends, but come hunting season, they can really wear on you.

OUTSTANDING Iceman!!!! I know EXACTLY what you are saying. The only thing I have left of my grandfather is a meat saw that he used. Every time I pick that saw up, it is a connection back to him and I think about the hard times he and my mom went through. My grandfather grew up during the depression and shells were expensive. He taught me to be patient and wait for birds to change there angle when flying by so you could drop two or more with one shot to save shells. I thank him each time I pick that saw up for the lessons he taught me. I was eight years old when he died and I am fortyone now and they still seem like it was this morning that I learned them.

Sounds like you and I think alike Iceman... It is good to know that someone remembers the past and those who went before us.

I think finding the ideal hunting partner is harder than finding a spouse.  Probably why I'm still looking for the "right" one.  Have a few that I do enjoy hunting with that may turn into that lifelong hunting partner, we'll see.  Well said thoughts on the subject, good thing there is an internet where likeminded folks can talk.

Great post Ice. The whole post is spot on, but the quoted portion is how I feel to a "T". I love my hunting buddies, but none of them, even my family hits all those points. (mostly the smoking and cooking) I won't trade my guys, but I find I kill more critters by myself. At least a portion (sometimes most) of every day is thinking about hunting.

Great points guys.
I am very fortunate to have a single waterfowl partner who is perfect.  We can get up at O'dark thirty, get our gear, the boat moving, decoys set, and set up in our blind, with a total of maybe a dozen words said during the entire time.  He will be out as long as I want to, he loves the crappiest weather.  I am very lucky.

I had the same in a big game partner, but, he moved to Maine and now I solo hunt.  Haven't found anybody who is as serious as me or willing to go into the real crappy thick stuff like me.  Better to hunt by myself than want to shoot the person I'm with.

I took this guy hunting for the first time up in skagit county the first thing he does is slam the door shut and then (you will not believe this) we are loading the guns and all of a sudden his goes off WHOOM!! I said what the f, he replied I was just seeing which way the safety worked.

I find myself very choosy as well, when it comes to hunting partners. My brothers, father, the late grandpa, and a few very close family friends are the only ones I go with. I have been asked to come along with others, or they ask to come along...but ya just kind of know sometimes, by the person, that they wouldnt be a good hunting match. We usually all split up when it is time to hunt anyway, only returning back to the truck to meet up and head back to camp or so....man...already getting the fever...come on hunting season, hurry up would ya?!

You know, I went back and read Krustys post and noticed a few things. First off, it was his first post. Lord knows, I sure have not been here long but I was welcomed. Second, I saw his knowledge of hunting and a few things hit me all at once. I am going to go out on a limb here so hang on... We are, for the most part it seems, seasoned hunters that primarily think along the same lines. I started to feel ashamed. We as hunters have the responcibility to EACH OTHER to keep our sport alive and safe. How do we do this? EDUCATION! I spent years as a hunter education instructor because I believe in it. I believe in introducing someone to the outdoors and teaching them the RIGHT way instead of letting them fall to the way side and it leaving a bad taste in there mouth and them turning against hunters. Besides, if they tried to stay with hunting and were making bad choices (like an ethical shot), we would be pissed off at that "hunter" and we did nothing to educate them. All we did was get pissed. How do we train our hunting dogs? I am not saying that this is the case with all "hunters" but think hard about this. The hunter we turn away could be as big a pain for our way of life as Bill and Sarah Brady or the one we take under our wing could be the next Fred Bear. So with that said, Krusty, welcome to the board and to the world of hunting. I will share what I can, but not my maps! ;-)

Shadow Cat is right. Personally, I bet KrustyPuff is learning a ton, and since he sought this place out, I am also sure he is already very similar to many of us. When more seasoned folks share more insight like posted here, KrustyPuff and others will surely benefit.

KrustyPuff welcome.

This year, my 9 year old daughter went turkey hunting with me, got up at Odarkthirty, she howled up three Toms before light, we hunted, and pushed and pushed and pushed until noon, and finally scored a super tom, which she helped yelp into range. She was on her feet for 8 straight hours with few breaks, she shed clothes when she got warm, she whispered, she tucked herself into bushes, she wore her facemask constantly, she quieted items which started to make noise, she watched her feet, all as she walked aside and behind me for the entire hunt. She listened. She asked. She learned. She proved she will make an excellent hunting partner, all on her first trip into the woods behind a gun. My buddies son, (sorry) is noisy and wants to get back to camp. He is bored.

I do not think you can make a great hunting partner, they just happen. KrustyPuff will have to go thru a few guys or gals, until he finds partners that he accepts.

the single best way to screen hunting partners is a early high buck hunt on foot sleeping in a betamid.....if they dig the miles of hiking and are ok with not seeing many deer and pass up little guys.....cool! If they bitch and moan I just go higher and faster. if I blow a early hunt I am far less pissed then a 10 day elk hunt coming to a halt because new guy is a puss or a whiner

You guys were a little rough on ol KrustyPuff......You all had to start somewhere. I have had all kinds of hunting partners. Some good and some bad, life goes on. There is only one way to find out. I really don't feel the need to get into what constitutes a good hunting partner......because it works both ways guys. Being a good hunting partner also means letting a few quirks slide. Alot of you guys are gonna get nose bleeds waay up there on your pedistals. Your hunting buddy is a buddy after all. Too much high and mighty going on. So what if your new friend can't afford super spendy binocs and needs to borrow yours sometimes. I own a cheap spotting scope, I don't need something that costs as much as a new shotgun. Granted there are people that you have to weed out from your camps and what not, but there is only one way to find out. PM me with your number KrustyPuff. I usually have room for one more gun in my blind. I'll put you on some ducks and geese this Oct.

Well put choclab.  I was blessed being born into a hunting family.  Some people arent that lucky, so its harder for them to get out and enjoy hunting.  Hit me with a pm Krustypuff, i have spots all over Washington.  Mainly i bear and blacktail hunt and i also love fishing the bay.
And choclab when are you putting me in that blind?

Chocolab, my point wasn't meant to be a dollar thing, but a commitment thing. As I stated, I have alot of older gear, but I make sure it is all ready to go. I do all my shotgunning with a used shotgun I paid one hundred bucks for. And, sorry, but anyone who cannot afford atleast a quality set of binoculars, isn't helping my camp...If you set aside ten dollars a month, you can buy good binoculars in a year. If you can't even do this, maybe you should do something else...If you need my binoc's to hunt, you are negatively impacting my hunt. I do my share of charity all year, but it ends come hunting season.
Title: Re: Looking for hunting buddies!!!
Post by: Choclab on July 21, 2007, 01:04:20 PM
I hear ya on the commitment. Some people refer to me as a pretty hardcore waterfowler. I have spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on gear and hours upon hours of time scouting. Some peoples ideas of "hunting" differ alot from mine. There is only one way to see if that same person has the dedication you have....take em out for a day. Day hunts are alot different than week long hunts. Day hunts will give you a taste of what to expect. You usually can get a good read on a guy from one day of chasing critters. That way you will not be miserable for a whole week. I have killed alot of big game in my day. I have been blessed to live in a good area. I am 15 minutes from deer and elk. My big game gear is weak in comparision (sp?) to my waterfowl gear. I still get it done it done though. I do see your point on gear though. I wish I had alot better optics then I do, but my passions lay else where. I look at it like this; why spend 1k on optics I will only use for a few weeks when I can spend that same 1k on some Dave Smith Decoys that I can use for 107 days? It all depends on your passions. It all boils down to finding someone with the same drive as you do. You won't know how "into" a certain game species someone is unless you take them. I usually share gear quite freely in the begining. I know it's kinda hard spending alot of cash on some sport you don't know if you will enjoy enough to justify spendy gear. I don't let people borrow me gear year in and year out. After the first season they get a taste if they like it or not and then they can go buy what they need. I say give rookies a chance to get the passion. Let them use some gear. Most guys new to a sport will have enough respect for your gear to treat it better than their own.....and for you because you are taking them out. Just my 2 cents....as I have introduced a TON og guys into the wonderful world of waterfowl.....

PS......Coondog.....PM me your number and we will hook up for some field hunts or mallard water hunts this year. I have a ton of extra gear (layouts, dekes, shotguns)...you just need to bring some warm cloths and your license...lol

Guys, I started reading this thread, after first reading Krustypuff's. I came to the conclusion that ShadowCat did, about the same time. Poor guy was looking for some teaching, and possibly some more hunting experiences, when a "gripe" fest started.

Think we should send him an e-mail and try to get him back???

This board if full of Hard-Core hunters, so it seems to me. We have quite a few that think exactly alike. Myself? I learned years ago that very few hunters are as hard as me, I go in miles, stay from dark-to-dark, and enjoy it all, even though my 'ol body is screaming at me in the evening. The Problem? After years of not being able to find a hunter that was like "me", I learned to just enjoy, hell LOVE, hunting by myself. I go where I want, WHEN I want. And I think this is what we have all evolved into...who knows?
So, what I'm saying, and ShadowCat said it too, sometimes its a sacrafice to take/teach another hunter. Its a sacrafice, but worth it in the future, so we hope.

Opinions???

I had sent this to him.

Hello! I am Bob, AKA Shadow Cat from the hunting Washington forums. If you are interested, we can get together and I can try to point you in the direction for some hunting and possibly do some together. Let me know. I am sorry the post that you had put up turned into a gripe fest. That was not right of us, me included and I apologize for it. We are all hard core hunters and most are set in our ways. Go back and read the post that I put up. Again, welcome to Hunting Washington.

Shadowcat, I had tried to post this earlier today, right as I was encountering issues with posting...so i saved it...here it is:

Littletoes, an email would be a great idea. I don't think anyone intended to scare Krusypuff off, but rather share their actual thoughts and experiences.   Littletoes, I will PM you and one of us can invite Krustpuff back...

Since you have emailed Kpuff, I may wait...did you email him recently?

First off I'm sorry  i wasb gone so long but had harddrive problems. Second i never asked to borrow any ones gear I wasnt tring to be a nucance, i was wanting to get to know a few people maybe be able to go out locally deer hunting or maybe drive to the eastern side of the state and shoot some chucks. I was looking to meet some people who had the same idea i do go out and enjoy doing something i have only done a few times and enjoyed when i did it but do to certain problems with the peopl ei did it with i can no longer hunt with them. And growing up i was not around avid hunters. Now I am asking ona board of hunters to maybe hook up amd enjoy hunting i get treated like a PETA member. tring to take away your right to hunt and bear arms. Thank you guys!!!! And you wonder why people talk SHI_Y about hunters..... Shadow cat thank you for for apologizing... But right now i am so pissed off from reading what people had rto say i dont know if i would want to hunt with people who would feel that way, as to your axe i can under stand your centimental feelings about it and your grandfather but if the person just sees a rusty broke as_ axe  headand you dont say "Man this axe brings back memories of my Grandfather and it is all I have of him, I sure do miss the old koot!!!!" we wont know that will we? I will be sure to talk about this experince i have had ona few other boards i have joined, and am talkig to people. Cause iI sure feel the luv here.......

As for rigs and gear, I have been into shooting and gear for a while, WONt need your water i have a camel back and a water purifer i keeop in the back pack, Hmmm your camper wont nbeed that as i have use of a 24 foot moter home, or my own tent and gear. Amd i would say that my 4x4 will go places mosts wont go or dare to take them.......Might not be in best of shape for the long hike up a hill but im working on that...........

Krustypuff,
I don't blame you. I think some things got carried away by passion from past experiances we have had. I am glad that you are not giving up on hunting. I would hope that you would find some one to show you the ropes and you learn from them and pass your knowledge on to a new hunter down the road.

As a new member who know none of you (at least I think I don't), I can definately appreciate what he said.  If I had gotten that response, that would have been the first and last time you ever saw or heard from me.

On the flipside, I treat online communities with more than a few grains of salt.  I accept it for what it is, and go about my life like you all aren't important too it.  :tung:  All that means is that it can be very fun to be part of an online hunting community, but at the same time, I existed without all of you (though I can't imagine how that happened  ;D).

Krustypuff, hunter types do generally learn from their mistakes.  It may be worth giving them a chance.  And if you won't take Choclab up on his offer of a duck hunt, maybe I will try talking him into taking me instead.

Naw i am all about blasting some ducks, last time i did any duck hunting was a few years ago over in Pasco with a ex buddy we use to drive and walk the irragation ditches and jump shoot them. Was great fun all exept drinking till lat eat night then the o130 butt crack of dawn lol.  We even use to go set up some deeks and try to call them in but it sounded like somehting dieing a very painfull death soi we stoppe dcalling.( would luv to learn to use the calls or im going to have to buck up and buy a foxpro6 ahhhhhhhh) Hell I even got my old man wanting to go back out hunting for some ducks now. He used to go as a kid but caught a load of goose shot in the face so that kind of turned him off hunting. But I got him to buy a 10-22 for target plinking and now he has that bug and is starting to customize it and we are going to go out and shoot us some of them scarry little squirrel and have some squirrel pie hahahah......

As for the resoponses i got i take most every thing with a grain of salt and let it roll of my back like water on a duck. Mostly what i am looking to do is meet some people that have like mnded intrest that i have who i can become friends with. I dont want to have to go to canned hunts and pay a *censored* load of money to shoot something not fair chase. (but if you got 5000 acres ill be happy to hunt it lol). I just want to connect with some peeps that i can talk to see if we hit it off and go from there. I am not ready for a 10 day hikingh up the pass kind of hunt. I need to get in better shape rthan i am, but i would like to go one a day hunt or a week end hunt. Im not looking to set B&C records i want something that i tracked shoot and am going to turn into some tasty vitales maybe some sausage or jerky... That is all im looking for. Next year i will have access for a place to stay in montana out side sheridan. Will have access to a possible great hunting dog whos father was a 3 time world field champ.  So lets trythis again. I just want to get out and do a little hunting and make some friends that allll................

And no i didnt make it to SOB I am going to one of these years.... I was rebulding the engine when it was going on.. Now i have a 400hp monster that eats gas like i breath.....

"And i have never been turkey hunting but have heard washington has the nations best at this time."  It's good here, but best in the Nation?  Not even close my friend.  Probably in the neighborhood of 20th in the Nation.  Lots of fun though and you should try it.  :)

I think what is important to remember here is that we all got introduced to hunting from a family member, friend, etc. I know lot of you guys hunt on your own but I would imagine that most everyone on the forum at one time was trying to meet up with someone to hunt with. We are all on this forum because of our intense interest in hunting. Forums like this are great to learn from, meet new people, share exp, etc. I hunt a lot by myself because I have friends who are not committed enough.. However I would totally prefer to have someone to hunt with. To me this adds to the experience. I do agree with the point of people who take advantage, borrow, are cheap and show no commitment. That is totally frustrating! . I also agree not everyone is a perfect match, but one thing I have noticed is people are two judgmental. Give a guy and chance and be up front with him on your expectations.
