Title: 2012 Wyoming Elk....Jan 31 is application deadline
Post by: ELKBURGER on January 12, 2012, 06:43:39 AM
The deadline is sneaking up. Who's putting in and for which area? I'm putting in for area 84,85,86. I've deer hunted that area in years past and seen some good elk. I want to give it a try....archery of course

Right now I'm thinking points only.  I have max points and don't want to burn them on a so so hunt.  Couple more years of research and maybe I'll find the hunt i'm looking for?  :dunno:

Points for me in AZ and WY this year.  I'll probably apply to UT.  I also ALWAYS buy a lottery ticket (usually more than one) for the Valles Caldera in NM.  Lucky enough to get drawn once, and it is God's Country of Elk habitat.  That and you get 3000 to 6000 acres of the Calderra to hunt all by yourself!!!  I was into BIG elk every morning and every evening!  Got to go back to NM.  But, I don't think I will put in for NM state drawing.  They changed the license allocations and now only 6% of the avaialble licenses are available to non-residents (previously was 10%).  They also changed it so you have to pay up front for tags during application, rather than after you were drawn.  If I don't get drawn for UT or Valles Caldera, I'll hunt WA archery elk and maybe non-resident over-the-counter archery in OR.

Good luck.  I've poked around in 84 and 85.  STEEP stuff, particularly 84!!!!  But, 84 does have one of the highest bull success rates too.

Points only for me this year.

Got the fingers crossed for unit 7. It's a long shot but at least I got one this year.

FYI points are due in sept. (I think) special draw and full price draw are due by Jan. 31.

Tag is $591.00. Not sure of my odds but it is not a premier unit so your odds improve. If I dont get drawn I'll get a point and I'll know early enough to apply for deer before that deadline, so either way I hope to go there. I've applied 3 times in the past for deer and drew every time. Lucky I guess :chuckle:

I have two for antelope and three for mule deer.  The unit i was gonna put in for for antelope is pretty much a guarantee draw but i might wait till next year.  I have 13 pts in this state on quality elk and i am nervous i will draw both and they will both be in september.  I was thinking i will get points for deer until i get 5 or so and then talk to a good friend of mine that is a taxi over there and see what he recommends.
