I need a new pair of gaiters...any suggestions? I walked out of the kenetreks in one month (bukles are junk) and have been wearing my ratty old pair. With the snow coming I need a GOOD pair. Any reviews on the Ourdoor Research? Mountain Hardwear?
-
I had a short pair of the OR product. The ones I had were nylon (noisy). I took them back. I will follow this thread as I am looking myself.
-
I think the Kennetreks are either made by OR for Kennetrek, or else they are a very close copy. I have both. They are cut the same, similar or same straps and buckles. The OR are made from much sturdier fabric, but they are not as quiet. I wear the Kennetreks for hunting, and the OR for everything else when I don't care about being quiet. I don't snug the straps and buckles that tight, only time I adjust them is if I switch to a different pair of boots.

I just bought the Cabelas Ultimate goretex gaiters. They seem quiet and I look forward to trying them out. I also have the OR ones and a real nice pair of REI ones but they're both too noisey for hunting, but they work great.
People speak highly of the Kennetreks and the Sitka gaiters too.
-
OR are noisy but they hold up better than any other. I did not like the way the MH fit my boot so I never gave them much punishment before I switched. Used Sitka last year and was pleased. They do not take the punishment OR does but they fit great and certainly got the job done.
(Size ten Hanwag Trapper Top and La Sportiva Alp were the boots I used them with)

Been using my Blackscreek for two years now and they're holding up really well and pretty quiet. Might want to check them out.

Better buy anything Blacks Creek now while you can!!! Major breakup in the company spawning Tenzing who does not yet carry the gaiters. I expect Blacks Creek will be a Mathews company before the end of the year. With a very limited offering compared to the Blacks Creek we've come to know.

i won a pair of kennetrek's at an elk banquet. they are by far the best gaiter in snow, mud, and rain ever. i have worn at least 5 different gaiters not counting duck tape. just gave all away to relatives and kept the kennetrek's. mike w

Nimrod makes a pair that you won't be able to wear out anytime soon. All their stuff is tuff as nails and made right here in washington. www.nimrodpacks.com

I have been using a pair of gamehide's hush hide gators for a few years now. They use a bunjy cord instead of a normal strap and buckle. I always seemed to break the buckle or tear the straps at the bottom of my gaiters. I went with these ones because they are really quiet, and I can easily replace the bunjy cords when/if they wear out. Here is a link to their website but I think I purchased them on sale for under $20 from Joe's when they were still in business.

:yeah: Great quality gear. Also, Kuiu is coming out with some that are supposed to be real good, but I haven't seen them yet.

My Kuius should be here Monday or Tuesday.... I'll get back when they get here and I get a chance to use them!

I am buying some of the KUIU too

Love the kenetrex gaiters I got, no problems yet and it was thick and wet everyday I was in the woods last year, no water sown my boots. I really like the buckles on them, much nicer than Velcro or the bungies.

Got it for christmas last year. Great bang for the buck!

I have DESTROYED the kenetrek gaiters in ~ one month of winter hiking/houd chasing. They couldn't hold up. I walked out of several pairs of the chaepo gaiters available through cabelas and sportsmans warehouse.
I settled on a pair of the OR gaiters and like them so far. They made it two months this winter and are still in good shape. I'm going to see how they hold up in December. I'll be in them for 15 days straight cat hunting and doing some big walking.
Noise and color are not a concern- these are only for keeping snow out of my boots.

my kuiu yukon gaiters got here, friday and i wore them this weekend, pretty killer for $60 :IBCOOL:
-
How noisy are the Kuiu gaiters?
-
they feel very much like a softshell. almost like felt. seem very durable while still being soft if that makes sense
-
The Kuiu's are nice from what I can tell so far! Although I think they are a bit noisey imho. I think for being a soft shell TOUGH feeling fabric they are about as quiet as you're going to find however. Who knows? I like 'em...

I had a pair from REI that were made of the material like sails are made of they were great, One year I decided to get some with a soft material on the outside because they looked quieter well by the end of the day they are covered by those little round prickly things.

Thanks guys for the info. I had the option to get in on the pre-order for the gaiters but I opted not too because of color. I think major brown would be my color of choice but Vias might be good too.

i ws thinkin the same thing until i saw his post saying late fall for the next shipment

I've owned about every major brand gaiter out there. Some of the fleece models were quiet, but didn't have a snug fit. Some had a good snug fit, but were loud as hell. Some seemed to fit the bill, but didn't hold up. As of right now, I will continue to use the Kenetrek gaiters. The pair I use most has several hundred miles on them in a lot of steep country, rocks, brush, and crusty snow. I had the hard rubber strap sewed to the gaiter instead of relying on the buckle. I wear the same style boots, so a non-adjustable fit didn't matter to me. When noise isn't an isssue, I use OR gaiters. They are built to take abuse, yet still fit snug. A couple semi-recent pairs I've tried included Sitka and Black Diamond. The Sitka's gaiter is built about as strong as any, but didn't fit me the way I like. They were aslo very loud and spendy. The Black Diamond's were junk, and were sent back twice and rebuilt after only a day in the hills. I would like to try the KUIU's, but decided against it because of the material they used. Noise is a big issue to me. I feel biggest issue with a pair of gaiters is the foot strap. It's usually the first to give. Nobody builds one as strong as I'd like it to be. :twocents:

Yes, I saw that too but I don't NEED them for this year. They would be a NICE to have.
