Yesterday I took my wife down to the Grand Ronde to see if we could catch a couple of fish and low and behold we did! It snowed a good 4 inches on us down there but we had a great time! Rattlesnake grade is a bit nasty but my buddy made it up and down in his two wheel drive ranger so it can be done. I will get some pics up later seeing as I have to head back down there and see if we cant find some more fish!

It was a fun day out on the river! I hope we can make it down there again soon but with all the snow it might make things a bit nasty on the grade!

Awesome. I want to take my wife . How far up?
-
I love the color on those fish. It's been way too long since I last fished there. :(
-
We were about 2 miles up from the hatchery!

-
Good spot there..fished it alot. Great pics  I will be down for the last couple months here in 2 weeks
-
I know exactly were you are talking about. Great looking fish and soulds like you had a great time.
-
Great pics...that's some real hardcore fishing
-
That river looks great! Never have made it down there. :'( Its more my style with the smaller river. Clearwater/snake/columbia are great but i like to be able to read the water on the smaller waters. Going to have to make it out to that nice little river this year.
-
You guys did a hell of a lot better in this weather than I did. Nice fish!
-
The river jumped to over 4,000 CFS up at troy so I hope that will blow the ice jams out! I cant wait to get the drift boat down there and really put a hurtin on some fish! We were going to make the trek down there this morning but I am not real sure that the river is in shape to we decided to pass! I hope to get down there this week before I have to go back to work on the Clearwater! I will put a report up if we do get back down there!

From what I have seen the river is not technical. Do you agree?
-
No for the most part the river is pretty easy to navigate but there are some stretches are a bit more technical than others. But the stretches from the hatchery to bogans is really easy and for the most part from bogans to schumaker is an easy drift as well! Both have lots of fish in them right now!

-
When you say the fish hatchery are you talking about the rearing pond on the way up from Bogans? I am wondering if there was an actual hatchery on that river.
-
There is 5 hatcherys..they took out 2 I think a few years ago in oregon. It was at one time or still may be the highest stocked steelhead river in the world.
-
Yea I am talkin about the one up from bogans.

WOW, there is three hatcherys on that river? I will have to get out google earth to see.
When does that river get their huge number of runs? It seams as if there are fish in that river all year long but there has to be times when it is off the charts.
-
January, February, and March are prime times for the Ronde but it can be iced up in Jan so it makes floating the river dangerous! I float it in February and March and fishing is fantastic! Once it comes back into shape I am headed down to put a wackin on some more fish!

If you ever want a couple of people to float that with you let me know. I know of a WSU student and his Dad who would be interested. :chuckle: :chuckle:

I will keep that in mind!

I've never had to worry about it coming into shape before, but after this last week I'm going to have to deal with it. Anyone know what a good flow is this time of year? How long does it typically take to get back fishing?
-
ill be down this weekend as long as the wednesday rain and warm weather doesnt bring it up again. This time of year you dont wanna be headed down to fish a rising river, usually means its muddy and cold. Jan-early febuary u wanna fish the deeper holes and that means the river needs to stay under 2400 cfs. I personally like to fish in Jan-early Feb under 2000cfs. Now once march arrives it really dont matter where the river is in flow..I have had some of my best days on that river in high muddy river clear up to 8,000 cfs.

Anyone been down Shumaker Grade in the last week? Wondering if it will be accessable this weekend or not.
-
last year it was unfishable during march and april, the water was much too high. the year before it was good with a limit of 5. this year it is 3 or 4? i think one of the hatcheries is for salmon. one steelhead hatchery is in oregon and the rearing pond for steels is about 2 miles above boggans at cottonwood. the fry are shipped from lyons ferry and put in the pond to reach a certain size then released. i have caught a few salmon in the river in the last 10 years. the tucannon river has a better run of salmon. mike w

We caught a jack last year. First time, pretty cool.

Almost everything you posted is incorrect :dunno:
I was on the ronde in March and april about 20 days last year...u dont fish the river much then..it was in great shape just the early flood in febuary ran all the fish up the river early so it made for spotty fishing during the prime month of march...There are 0 salmon hatcherys on the ronde..there has been talks in OR by tribes of introducing a springer run..the current salmon in the river are all native run fish..fall too.
Also there is other hatcherys on the Ronde in OR.. plus the miniam river and wallawa river too
-
Can someone shed some light on timing of the 3 steelhead runs?
-
Three steelhead runs? You have more chance that one of those heads will bite my bait. :chuckle:
-
There is only 1 run of steelhead on the Grand Ronde they are a summer run steelhead but they move into the river from September through march.
B_C
-
Where as the Clearwater river (Which is close) has many runs.
-
The Clearwater has 1 run of steelhead but they break it in to 2 sub runs an A run and B run. The A run are typically smaller fish in the 5 to 8 pound class and they spend 1 year out in the ocean the B run are the larger fish and they spend two years out in the ocean. The smaller fish show up a bit earlier as well but there are still some bigger fish mixed in!
B_C
-
The three runs I am referring to are (1) early returns to a tributary in Oregon, mostly wild fish. (2) Oregon hatchery fish which run now ish? And (3) the Washington hatchery fish. All these runs are A run fish and all run Sept- April, I just don't know specific timings.
-
They all hit the Ronde in Sept and slowly make there way up in the fall till temps drop and they hold...then the next spike in water levels they move up and so on thru April. There is no specific runs and timing on the river. I can tell you to not fish above cottonwood hatchery by the second weekend in March because almost all the OR fish have moved up into there spawning areas and leaves very few fish in WA waters..fish below cottonwood and there will be lots of fish. :twocents:

Hmmm, different size fish, one showing up earlier. Sounds like two distinct runs to me :dunno:
-
They are Summer Run Steelhead sub classified into 2 runs an A run and B run based on size. They spawn at the same time as well. If they were two distinct runs than they would have different spawning times. The steelhead in the Clearwater have the same spawning time as well.
B_C
-
Ya, I guess it's how you define "runs", spawning time or time that they enter the river
-
PNW is correct that the fish are in different parts of the river at different times. The oregon fish pass by prior to the Wa fish arriving. I think the question is when does that occur in the various parts of the river.
