Post by: maddog on January 21, 2012, 10:33:59 PM
Looking to buy a new ar 15 .223 with a 24" barrel & a good trigger, and would like to get the most accurate factory rifle I can for $1500 or less.  Any ideas?

Look at this upper for shooting 55gr and lighter bullets

and have a look at the 1 in 8 version if you want to shoot 55gr and heavier bullets. Match it with the lower of your choice with a good trigger and you are set.

With 1500 you can get about any flavor you want. For 100% factory I love bushmaster. You can buy a killer upper and buy a lower and put them together and have a great gun. If you don't want to go that way, a 24" special varmint from bushmaster will fit you wants well.

I have heard good things about bushmaster, and have been looking hard at the new A-tac varminter.

That would be a great choice for you. It has the 1:8 twist that will run the 55g+ bullets very well. I have had a hard time getting a 1:9 twist to shoot any more then 53g. I have had a lot of buchmaster and all have shot very well with the right bullets matched to them.

+1 The Bushmaster Varminter is a true 1/2" AR. I haven't owned one in awhile since I started building my own. The only thing I didn't care for about it was the twist. They may have changed it by now but back then it wouldn't stabalize the 69gr bullets. I've smoked allot of Rochchucks with the Varminter.

Looks like the A-tac has a 1 in 9 twist.  So what grain bullets would I be wanting to shoot?

If you want to shoot 55 grain bullets or more go to the predator its a 20" with a 1:8 twist. The 24" bushys have a 1:9 twist that shoot up to 53 grains well. I have never got anything 53+ to shoot well in my 1:9's. The atac predator is about a half pound lighter and alomst the same gun. Then you can run the 50+ bullets well threw it.

If you want varminter in the 24" with the 1:9 I would look into the 53g hpbt's from serria, thats what has shot well for me in rifles with the 1:9 twist.

What do you consider "well"? My 24" 1:9 dpms barrel shoots 55 and 62 gr both well but so far it doesn't shoot anything lighter worth a damn.

I want all my 25 cal or less rifles to shoot 3/4" or less. Most of the time I could only get around 1.5" groups with 55+ bullets. I tried it in about 4 rifle that I have had with the 1:9 twist. I could not get the heavy stuff to run in any of them so that is why I favor the 1:8". I have great luck running the heavy stuff threw rifles with the 1:8 I was running light bullets in my 1:9 and getting to many runners with the light bullets.

I expect all my rifles to group as follows
25 or less 3/4"
26-30 cal no mags 1"
all mags 1.5"

I am a bit picky and will sell a rifle if I cant get these results. Now I do play with about 10-15 loads before I sell them. Some rifle will drive tacks and others will not. Even if they are the same gun. I have had 3 win model 70's and only one shoots great. My first one, I have bought 2 other looking for another like the one I have and have sold both since. Both shot o.k but not good enough for me.

I will be using the gun on coyotes & prairie dogs, so I will be shooting as far away as I can see them. I have a 1/2 shooting .300win mag with a 5.5x22x56 nightforce scope for bigger animals at long range.  I considered .204 ruger but it is not leagal for cougars.  I realy wanted something pelt freindly also & the .223 would be alot more pocket freindly for shooting groundhogs.  Also considered .243, but I would rather have that caliber in a bolt gun to get everything out of it, plus it would be expensive to feed for prairie dogs!

White Oak would be my number one.
I have had two Rock River Varmints that would shoot 3/4" or better all day long with factory 77gr MatchKings.
Complete rifle with two-stage trigger for about a grand.
You really can't beat it.
There are plenty of RRA rifles on the line a Camp Perry with guys that know a little something about AR15 accuracy.
