I know 1911's are a topic that gets beat a lot, but I'm looking for some info. I've been looking at 1911's lately, been leaning towards the Remington R1. I've read through a lot of the 1911 topics here, haven't really found anyone that has one. Just looking for anyone that has first hand knowledge, i.e opinions, and prices that you have found. Seem mostly around the $600 mark most places I've looked. Looking for the pros and cons from anyone with experience with them. Thanks!

I've got one, and really like it. Can punch a fist sized hole in a target 10 yards away with plain jane off the shelf ammo, which is accurate enough for me. Feeds ball ammo as well as HP, no jams, no stove pipes, etc... I paid somewhere around $550 for it. Good balance, decent finish and it's your normal 1911. Great deal for the price. Only thing I would have liked to add is a beaver tail and ambi safety because I'm a lefty, but your not going to get that for $550 with a good gun. I'm going to add a Ruger SR1911 to my collection next, to solve the beaver tail issue.
It comes with a "platinum service" package. Basically, its a gun cleaning. I'm more than capable of cleaning my own gun, but I took advantage of it to see what would happen, and am glad I did. You call them up, they send you a pre-paid package to ship your gun back to them. It goes by one day air. I dropped it off at UPS around 5:30pm, they had it by 10am the next day, and I had it back 6 days later. They found the grip safety wasn't working and fixed it. Whole thing cost me nothing, not even shipping, and my gun had a once over by the factory after firing 1,000 rounds.

Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear you have a good experience with it.
The platinum service package sounds like a pretty decent deal. Good way for any defects to show up and be repaired the "right" way within a very reasonable time frame.
The Rugers do look very nice too. Wouldn't mind having one of those at all.
Any good shops you can recommend going through around the Olympia area? Willing to drive further for decent service. I'm stationed at Lewis, and have never bought a gun here, so just looking for a place where I won't get screwed.

Cascade arms and surplus ammo and arms are great guys to deal with. I don't know if they have any of those or not as I haven't been eyeing hand candy lately. Cascade is in lacey/olympia and you know where surplus is I'm sure.
-
Yep I've been to surplus. Nice guys. I'll check out cascade. Buddy bought a rifle (Tikka) from east county guns in elma, anyone have experience with them?

I bought one last year and was pretty impressed. Ive run al sorts of handloads through it and it cycles everything very well. The one thing I dont like is the trigger but other than that. Id recommend one for sure.

They seem to be a well made, American 1911 that wont rip your wallet like a Kimber. I think you will like it! Let us know! I went with a Dan Wesson Pointman 1911 close to ten yeras ago. They made a few models before selling out to CZ in 2005, if you can find one of the original (pre CZ) Dan Wessons, they are awesome.

My buddy has one, I've shot it and liked it. I havent' shot any other models of 1911's though. I liked it better than my .45lc but still enjoy revolvers more

Thanks everyone for the replies

Andy at East County Guns is a good guy.
I've bought maybe 5 guns from him.
Every one was a straight deal.

Got a little more chance to mess around with different 1911s, ended up ordering the Remington today from Cascade Arms in Lacey. Hopefully will be there beginning of next week! Jeff was awesome to deal with. Can't wait. :IBCOOL:
