Title: Looking for a "PBD" camera to take on hunts
Post by: Rob on February 01, 2012, 02:16:32 PM
I am looking for a camera to put in the pack for hunts.  Must be a PBD style camera (Push the Button Dummy).  i.e. I don't want to spend a lot of time messing with lenses, focus, etc.  I just want something easy that any dummy (like me) can use.

Looking for something small, light, and durable.  Waterproof to like 10 feet would be a major plus.

As for # of Mega Pixels, I am not a high end kinda guy. I have been happy with my my current 5 mega pixel camera for the past 5 years so I will be happy with anything that good or better.

What have others used and been happy (or disappointed) with?

What about those cheap throwaway cameras for snorkling or just the outdoors? I've seen em' take pretty decent pics, cheap, buy a 5 or 6, use em up.

Yeah, I have seen those with 35 mm film before.  I assume they make the in digital format now.

I was looking for something a bit longer term than a disposable.  Good idea though.

Okay.....fine.....moving on.

Next idea.......two cameras...cheap, 5mp or better, digital. Get a cord or something that will allow you to dump the pics from the camera to your smart phone or back up device. Do this daily. One phone gets trashed by an elephant cause he is stomping your a@@ ......SNAP......backup camera to the rescue. Once they peel you off of the beasts little foot you can grab your back up camera and go kill Pumba.

Huh.....yeah.....good one I know!

Here's something like what I use.  Different brand but same purpose.  It's basically a dry bag for your camera.  It takes up very little space and for me has worked nicely in some very wet environments.  It's cheaper than buying a waterproof camera.

Look at the Pentax OPTIO cameras. We use them Whitewater Kayaking and they are easy to use and waterproof. If you look on ebay for a model thats might be a year or two old you'll spend less then $150 for about a 7mp camera.

The newest latest greatest is like 12mp and $250 listish..

I like mine..

HERO camera's are another lite nothing but a button to push camera and they do take nice pictures.

Rob -- buy a Canon P/S in the price range you want. 200 gets you a mag cover shot quality photo. Don't expect any high quality animal photos at a distance though.

I have a Panasonic Lumix (don't recall the exact model) that I have been very happy with.  It is small but has good zoom and takes excellent pics if the light is good but as with most small digital cameras the quality of pics drops when the light drops.  I've only had it for around 2yrs but it's been problem free.

Sony Cybershot. You can get one for about $70 and the picture quality is very good.

My wife has the Canon PowerShot A590IS.  Crazy great picture quality for a sub 200.00 camera.  And it is amazing for video as well.
