Title: Chiwawa youth tag - Help
Post by: finfeatherfur on July 23, 2008, 07:31:19 PM
My daughter drew her first youth tag this year - A doe permit in Chiwawa Unit 245.  Any suggestions on where to start.  I have never hunted that unit and plan on a scouting trip in August.  Any areas, road numbers a place to start looking would be appreciated.  thanks in advance for the help.

i second rocky mtn fever-dirtyface, pole ridge, fr 6300, spent many years hunting that exact area, the last 8 to be exact. nothing's easy but pretty darn as close to as easy as you can get to find doe in my opinion.  lots of people there last year though, especially in the burn area on dirtyface.  some good clear cuts if you walk behind the gated roads there. see doe pretty much everday out there.  if your looking to hunt/scout the area, i'll be happy to give you more specifics.

I would drive up the Chiwawa River Road early in the morning.  If you don't see a dry doe on the drive up, then stop at the campgrounds and trailheads on the way back down and hunt around those spots.  Just spend 30 minutes on stand or still hunting and you will find a good doe.  Maybe a legal buck as well.

She will be doing the wildlife biologists and the deer herd a favor by removing one of the local does.  The migratory bucks and does will not have to compete with her for winter food.  Good Luck and Have Fun.

Her hunt starts October 11th.

I will be spending the next weekend with maps to layout a scouting plan.  I may take you up on additional info.  thanks for all your help.

Check out Maverick Saddle area. Shouldn't have a problem getting a doe up there
