The General Grabber AT looks a bit like the BFG's, only less $$. I am a big user of the Firestone Transforce AT.
-
Just about all "aggresive" tread patterns are a softer compound for max traction and not the greatest in the wear category especially on a heavy ol diesel rig. :twocents:
-
Destination mud terrain by Firestone in 315-70-17 one ton dodge mega cab diesel. four tires 950.00 I pull a 36' 5th wheel and they are one hell of a tire. Makes the truck look amazing and they tow GREAT. I will never buy another tire for my truck. :twocents:

Go to America's Tire. I've been a LS man for years and was convinced of their service ethic, which is good. But a pricing comparison saved me $500 on the Cherokee. Hancooks are very competitive.
-
Dont buy cooper, SO NOISY! Tread doesnt last long with the mud tires. Bfg's are good, i put toyo mt's on in sept and love them. Didnt like the km2 tread, and wanted more aggressive than the at, but a good tire. The nitto mud tire is a decent one, you get what you pay for
-
Court get the ST Maxx they look sick, and my dad has coopers on his truck, just the AT3, nothing fancy but they have been a very good tire for the price. Most cooper reviews seem pretty good.
-
I had the Cooper ST but went with the Les Schwab mud terrain as money is tight right now. If I had the money I would have replaced the Cooper ST with more ST's. I think they are one of the best tires out there. I got 60,000 miles out of mine, but I only drive a 1/2 ton. The ST MAXX is a harder compound so it should have extended wear with a diesel. My wife runs the AT3 on her Ford Escape and I love those tires, so far they out perform the Toyo AT hands down.

The nitto tires are on my truck and I can't wait till they go bald to buy new one's. They are great in deep snow, but have little traction on compact snow and ice. The thing about them I hate the most, Holy crap they are loud!!! I keep trying to turn down the radio because of the noise they make, it's very frustrating-like your head is gonna explode. I'm gonna try the toyo's or the BF goodrich next I think.

If your unhappy with the Nitto's, don't bother with the Toyo's. Nitto's are made by Toyo and are one in the same.

basically... if you want a good, aggressive looking mud tire then prepare to replace them often and listen to them a lot. I'm fond of BFG KM2's and Cooper STT's but that's on 1/2 tons and toyotas.
One tire that looks decent (not great) and actually seems to last on a diesel is the schwabs mud terrain SXT. My dad gets over 50k on them with a dodge/cummins. They're not the best off road or on the highway but a great meet in the middle type combo.

Thanks for the info, the search continues.

The key to running Toyo MT's on a Dodge diesel truck is air pressure and rotation.
Rotate them faithfully every 5k miles.
You keep the front's at 50 psi and the rears at 30-35 psi and you will get 50k+ out of these mud terrain tires.
You run the air pressure up to 60-65 psi all the way around and you will be lucky to get 40k out of them.
Toyo MT's are notorious for being a crappy handling tire. They constantly pull to the right. Your constantly correcting the wheel to keep it on a straight line at freeway speeds as they hunt the ruts bad.
Running at the above air pressures for daily driving is the best you can do to get decent handling and tire life expectancy.

Coopers are good tires. You might also look at Goodyear Dura-Tracs.

Toyos are the quietest mt out there. I have no bias or affiliation with toyo, just have rode on a lot of brands.

If you're looking for an off-road tire that aren't too noisy on blacktop, Cooper stt's are the way to go. Best bang for the buck, and they last long too. I've had bfg mud terrains km2's, but they lose tread way too fast and are quite pricey.
-
I bought a set of km2 and really like them I have always got 60to70thousand miles out of bfg tires. I bought them at discount tires. and they price matched a quote I got off the internet saved me 200dollars just get quote off computer and add the shipping cost discount tires will match

Copper are the only way to go. I am currently running g and have ran atleast four sets of the SST and the now the Max. I currently have 30K and they are in awesome shape. In between sets I ran Toyo's- huge mistake- got 24K till they were darn near bald. Every set of Coopers I ran I got 50-55K out of them on heavy diesels...
-
Toyo M-55. Not to loud, great traction, great wear, just rotate them every 5-6k and drive. I tow quit a bit, and play in mud/snow/dirt. I have 25k on mine now and they are about 1/2 gone...

almost forgot about these tires... This is possibly the best tire on a heavy rig if you drive a lot of gravel. not the best looking and not the best off road but a very stout tire that wears well.

A couple of years ago I went with the Goodyear Wrangler AT's from Wal Mart. Not an MT but plenty aggressive enough IMO. Tread wear has been great, noise isn't too much, and traction has been superb. And for $660 installed w/tax for a full set of 31/10.50's, I couldn't pass them up. I'd say at least give them a look next time you're there.

How many miles did you get out of your toyo's?
-
How many miles did you get out of your toyo's?
barely 20 thousand. i was faithful about rotating them and ran the air pressure pretty low

Bummer man. I just put a set on my 06 duramax, hope they last. When i went through buying tires, i had to wade through so much *censored*, it drove me nuts. One person would say a tire is crap and the next would say it was wonderful. I chose Toyo mt's because they had the best reviews overall, they are quiet for a mt, and resonably priced when i bought them online. You have to remember though, we do drive 8000 pound trucks, not 3000 pound yota's that can run on a set of tires for 60k.

that's about what everybody that I know get's on their toyo MT's on a diesel. 18-25k

I find that guys that say they get more than about 30k miles on toyo mud tires either never see snow/ice or they drive that last season scared to death. I run summer and winter skins because I spend a ton of time driving in the mountains and riding on anything shy of good tires scares me. I run duratrac's in the winter on my dmax.
-
3/4 and 1 ton trucks use up all brands of mud terrains pretty quick. If you have to have a mud terrain on a 3/4 or 1 ton then plan on replacing much sooner than you would with a good all terrain tire.
The Toyo MT is my favorite mud terrain for ride quality and last a long time on 1/2 tons and smaller trucks but not on the bigger trucks.
-
Always had good success with BFG's. Have a set of KM's on one of my trucks(chevy 1500 4by) thats got 50k on them and still at 60% tread.
Had Pro Comps on my other truck(Chevy 2500 HD), switched to Nitto's before last hunting season and am very happy. Nittos are alot quieter than my Comp's where, and they grip anything you run them on. Will see how long they last.
I stayed away from Toyo's cause I dont like the store that sells them, everyone seems to run them, and everyone I know thats had them loves the traction but they dont last but a couple of years.
-
I know what tires not to get. Goodyear Wranglers came on my 2010 F350 and they sucked. Worn out in 25k and slipped around so much on wet pavement they were dangerous. I have a 3500 # trailer & had to go to 4 wd at stop lights with any road incline at all in wet weather. I replaced them with the new BF good but have not run them long enough to give a report. Mike

Some of us must have different ideas on what 60% tread is. To me, bald is about 7/32"

Here's some crappy cell phone pics of the Wal Mart Goodyear Wrangler Authority A/T's on my truck:

They have 24,000 miles on them. I only have an F-150 though so a big diesel is gonna be a bit harder on them.
