Title: Who bowhunts turkeys?
Post by: oldleclercrd on February 09, 2012, 02:01:49 PM
Just wondering who has killed one. Ive killed plenty with a shotgun so its time to breakout the bow. Whats the best method with a bow? Do you use a blind so they wont catch you draw?

A ground blind is almost a necessity. But my best bird has been on a spot and stalk when we got in late one day trying to sneak to the blind, saw this gobbler and snuck to intercept behind some big bushes. Good luck

Yeah I figured as much, as far as them seeing you draw on them. Although, last spring I stalked a gobbler strutting for a hen (with a shotgun) and im confident I could have shot him with a bow, because I got within 20 yards when I shot him.

Hope to do it this year when I am over in Spokane for the WSAA State Safari... gonna go over a couple of days early and see if I can get on one... or two.... Good call on the blind.

killed 2 with a bow when I lived in KS when I was in a tree stand deer hunting. I used to have 20to 30 roost in the tree I was sitting in every night. First time scared the crap out of me. :chuckle:

Have tried a few times from ground blind but never close enough for a shot. Heck of a trophy with a bow

Ribka You can have one with a bow this year if you want to make the trip to Elk.

Bowhunting turkeys is a blast. I have killed 4 gobblers with a bow. Two were from  natural groundblinds I built near field edges. One out of a treestand, and one from the ground while running and gunning.

My brother has killed several with a longbow from the ground without a blind. These days he wears a ghillie suit, calls them in and waits to draw his bow until their vision is obscured by either their own tail fan or a tree, bush or rock, etc.

I've shot some birds with my bow.  Never out of a blind though.  Use of trees to hide my movement worked well and one out of a tree stand.

I love shooting them with a bow,  have found that blind and full strut decoyy works the best as of lately.  Running and gunning with a crossbow would be fun though

Now THAT'S hunting.  I would give it a try with my longbow, but I've only killed a few with a shotgun, so I'm not quite ready yet.
