Title: Just ordered a Glock 20sf!! I cant wait.
Post by: marlin on February 09, 2012, 09:15:55 PM
Its not good for my financial situation that the Fort Lewis PX now sells guns and they accept Military Star Cards LOL> I went in there this morning and special ordered a brand new Glock 20SF.. They couldnt get a 15rd model that wasnt backordered, but they sold me two 15rd mags for 23 bucks, and the pistol will come with the 2 10rd mags. So I will soon have a brand new in the box Glock 20sf and I cant wait to get some Buffalo Bore ammo and try to recreate their load in a handload.
Only problem is, even reloading its going to be expensive to shoot. It looks like it will be about 25 cents per shot which isnt bad, but thats not including brass so I guess Ill see how cheap I can get some brass. Cheapest factory loads I saw were about 60 cents per shot.

Are you sure they didn't order you a G29? I have a g20sf and it came with 2 15 round mags. Either way, congrats on the gun!!! 10mm is awesome!

Glock offers a "homeland security discount" to most first responders. Military (I think retired military too), EMTs, security guards, corrections, firefighters, and even some attorneys all qualify. I'd check with a gun shop that's a Glock law enforcement distributor and see what their price is for a blue label 20sf. The package includes 3 high-cap mags if I remember correctly.

:yike: I heard youre not supposed to reload ammo fired from a glock! be careful. I hope an expert will chime in on this one...

Glocks, especially the 40 and 10mm versions, are extremely hard on brass. That's one of the reasons I didn't like mine. The unsupported case head helps them feed any imaginable bullet profile, but leaves very little support for the brass. I never ran brass more than 2full power firings before I scrapped it. If I was running lighter loads I would use the bras 3-4 times.

I bet the one he ordered is the California version which only ships with 10 round mags. Same gun, just 10 round mags instead of 15.

That is about it, but you can purchase an aftermarket barrel that has a supported chamber and slightly different rifling to fire your reloads all day long in it.

Im already looking at the options I will have.. I might be interested in a 9x25 dillon conversion barrel or a .357 SIG barrel for it. Maybe a Lone Wolf G21 slide and barrel so I can shoot .45acp in it.
Yeah the one Im getting is the 10rd model for magazine capacity regulated states, only because the px's supplier was backordered on the 15rd model. 2 15rd mags for 23 bucks is good though.. 11.50 each? come on. My Ruger SR9's mags are like 40 each. Ill probably sell the 10rd mags.
I realize I shouldnt shoot cast lead in the stock barrel, but I dont see why jacketed reloads should hurt anything. I am a little concerned about the lack of support in the chamber for the case. I have seen that G20 that someone overloaded and it blew up.. I wouldnt want that to happen. I think this is going to be just like an AR, too many available options means I could spend a ton on it. Now Im thinking it might have been better for me to get a G21sf and then get a G20 longslide from lone wolf. None the less, I cant wait to get it, and I will post some pics Im sure.

What's the price? I assume you're military and would qualify for Glock's discount on a blue label gun through a qualified distributor.

$586 total including the NIB gun and the 2 additional 15rd mags. Not bad. Ive seen them used and on gunbroker for less sometimes. but with shipping and transfer fees they add up. I think its a pretty good deal, other than being put on a credit card.

If you pick up an aftermarket barrel, the ammo problems all go away. Plus, my Glock factory barrels are not known for being incredibly accurate. I'm not saying that they're bad, but an aftermarket barrel would be an improvement.

You NEED to check with a LE distributor on the homeland security discount. Should be way lower than that price, and that's with 3 high caps. A lot of gun shops around here are certified Glock LE dealers.

Please dear god tell me the OP is somehow a civilian! The PX doesn't do the glock LEO/Military program. Surplus does and they're 5 minutes away. Other than that, sounds like a sweet gun purchase

Im on IRR (Inactive Ready Reserves) SO..... For all intensive purposes I am a civillian and probably wouldnt be eligible for that.. But I hadn't ever heard of that until you guys told me. Besides I put it on the star card because there was too much available credit for me to not buy a gun, and I didnt have the cash!  :bash:
I saw an old wore out G20 at the centralia gun show today for $525 So Im still pretty happy with my purchase. Alot happier than my girlfriend is about it! But she wont let me sell anything to make up for it.. So Ill just have to be on my best behavior for a while and not buy any more guns for a while. I have been buying too many toys.

I am starting to have some 2nd thoughts already though, because this homeland security discount was mentioned. Maybe I would be eligible, but that would require me to either wait until I have the cash for it, or sell another gun for it. Also I am a little worried about the brass life. I could just go with a .44 mag and the brass would probably last forever and I wouldnt have to chase it down, but then I wouldnt have 15+1 capacity. I guess I could cancel my order and try to find another place where I might be able to get the HLS discount.. But I am excited to get the thing in my hands and go shoot it.
I was out walking around in the woods and found about 15rds of 10mm brass, and it was all bulged at the bottom. It was probably fired from a glock and it looked like once fired brass. Nickel plated. In my experience the nickel plated stuff is stiffer and stronger, so if it was new brass that bulged after the first firing, I am a little concerned. I like the power and capacity the g20 offers, and the fact that Ted Nugent shoots deer with his! I have a .380, a 9mm, a .357mag, and I want a more powerful pistol I am just worried about the cost of shooting it if I will have to buy new brass after only a couple firings. My 9mm brass lasts forever it seems like, and so does .38spl brass. .380 lasts as long as I can find it, my P3AT flings brass in no particular direction and far.
Any G20 owners who reload care to fill me in on how long I should expect brass to last? I would feel bad about cancelling an order but its not like they wont be able to sell it if I do.

I bought a blue label G20sf about 18 months ago and I think it was around $470.
I don't reload so I can't answer any of your reloading questions, but it is the perfect woods gun. I have other Glocks that fire cheaper ammo for practice. My G20 has still eaten a bunch of Blazer and Remington FMJ ammo plus a few mags of hot Double Tap HPs without a worry.
I can't think of a pistol that is practical and packs more punch than a G20.

As already mentioned you can buy a different barrel that will support the brass and allow for more reloads per piece of brass. The tradeoff is that the barrel that better supports the brass may not eat any and everything you feed it. I will tell you that I fire factory reloaded brass right now and that's all mine usually gets. The brass still looks good after firing but I don't reload mine yet. I'm also only firing a .40 s&w so I'm not dealing with the same type of charges you will.

Keep It!  10mm auto is a sweet round, escpecially if you reload. It's just a little pricey.  I have basically 3 different loads for my G20 (factory Barrel). My pesonal protection load: a nice hot load pushing 180gr XTPs,  my hiking/ bear protection load: a max pressure load pushing 200gr FMJ's, and my plinking/ shooting at the range load: 165 gr speers at basically the "10mm light" pressure, not much hotter than a .40 s&w.  with the hotter loads the Brass is usually good for 2 or 3 reloads, occasionally 1 will bulge pretty bad on the first go around.  But with the lighter loads I'm pretty comfortable going for 4.  Not that great of a life expectancy but it's about the same as what I get out of my 22-250 Rem Brass and where else are you going to get that much power and capacity in as compact and light of a package as a g20sf? with very manageable recoil as well (compared to 357mag/ 44 mag).  So keep it and buy your 44 mag later, or better yet find a Smith&Wesson 610 (10mm auto revolver) and have 2 guns in the same caliber.   If you do want to save money on brass like Wraithen said look into an aftermarket barrel, your accuracy should get better while the reliability may go down a bit your brass will be better supported in the chamber and therefor last longer as its less susceptible to bulgeing.   And if you do change you mind I'll take those 2 15 round mags you paid $23 bucks for off your hands.   :chuckle:

BTW you can tell if the brass you found was fired from a glock by the rectangular firing pin strike on the primer.  The Delta Elite, Bren Ten, S&W 610 and whatever else is out there will make a round primer strike.

You pretty much summed up the reasons I no longer have my G20 or G29. I sold both to buy a Dan Wesson CCBT 10mm as my 10mm auto loader. That was a great gun, but I had to sell BOTH Glocks to pay for the DW. I ended up selling the DW after a wrist injury made the 10mm too "snappy" for me to shoot out of an auto loader.

Now I have a S&W 610 6.5" revolver in 10mm. It's doesn't hold 15 rounds and it isn't very concealable, but it's more accurate and much stronger than the G20 was ever going to be.  The problem is that they don't make the 610 any more and they're getting hard/expensive to find.

I think you should follow through with the G20. Try it and see how it works out for you. If you don't like it you can always sell it. People are always looking for G20s.

Thanks SkyBuster, that was some good info. The brass I found does have the rectangular glock firing pin imprint. I guess as long as I dont plan on shooting it like its a .22 Ill be alright! Im still a little unsure on my order, but I suppose it is true that I would be able to resale it down the road if something else comes up.
I did see a EAA Witness Elite Match 10mm for $500 used.. Those appeal to me too, have around the same capacity, and are probably more accurate with the single action trigger. I am sure the Glock would be more reliable and have better resale value though. What I think is cool about the EAA is that you can easily get slides and barrels in all the other calibers you want. The .22 conversion would be cheaper and I could get a 9mm slide for that.. AFAIK there is no way you can get a 9mm slide on a G20 because its on a bigger frame than the G17.
I saw the Advantage Arms G20/21 .22 conversion runs for like 300 bucks.. If I end up holding on to the glock I would probably get that so I could practice the Glock trigger for less money. Anybody have on of the Glock .22 conversions? I run a Ciener .22 conversion in my AR and I love it, I wonder if the Glock conversion would be as reliable and fun

Reloading makes it allot cheaper, 300 plates hollow point bullets 35 bucks, plus primers powder and brass and you have 300 10mm for around $65.

Go to sportco they have 10mm for $17 a box of fifty.
If you want hot loads shoot double tap ammo or buffalo bore.

I have been using blue dot powder 8 grains for range shooting,

You will not regret getting it, I would recommend a trigger job though

I went out in the woods and shot 50rds of cheap hsm 10mm today, just because ive had the glock too long to wait to shoot it any longer. Ran perfectly and Im in love! I shot some empty beer bottles that just happened to be left out there, and they just completely disintegrated! I didnt shoot any paper targets with it, but it shot right where I was aiming and so far I couldnt be happier with it! My brass didnt look too messed up. Just a little swollen, and the extractor leaves some gouges in the brass but nothing major. Im tempted to head up to surplus ammo and arms in lakewood and get 500rds of the BVAC 180gr HP's just to have some practice ammo and brass to reload.

Just remember that bvac is already reloaded once so it will start with one firing less life most likely. I also picked up a few of those plastic containers for bullets so they aren't always bouncing around in the cardboard box. I hate doing it though since I seem to shoot 250 rounds every time I take mine to the range.
