Title: rem 700 sps .308
Post by: coachcw on February 13, 2012, 08:01:42 AM

A 20" .308 barrel is just as accurate as a 24" or 26". You can get a little more speed out of a 24"-26" but I personally feel it's not enough to matter. The .308 Winchester is just a accurate cartridge period. I have never shot the .308 much. I have a like new Rem700 26" PSS I purchased back in 91 that only has maybe 100 rounds tops on it. Where as I have put 600 rounds on a Sendero .300 Win Mag in two weeks.

thanks I will stick with the 20 then , maybe spend the money on the trigger  and a break .

or is it worth spending time and money making a 600-700 yard gun outta it ?

If it shoots decent  already a trigger makes it all the better, I like muzzle breaks because I varmint hunt allot alone and I like to watch my hits or impacts through the scope so I can make corrections if need be. I hate taking a shot at a Rockchuck at distance and loosing the sight picture due to recoil. Not being able to confirm the hit sometimes or know what elevation correction to make. I've worn allot of boot leather, pounding out through the sage brush to confirm what I pretty much already knew but without a body it doesn't count.

Like hammer said all you are going to be gaining is some fps. I would find a better caliber to dump money into if you are wanting to make a long range 600-700 yard gun. The 308 just isn't a great hunting cartridge at that range.

Note I said hunting. Not competitions  There is no doubt that the 308 can shoot to 1000 without any problems. But for a hunting gun on big game animals at 700 yards. I would pick another gun to use

Carp, I deleted my comment after re-reading yours. I'd agree that there are better calibers for hunting.  I do like my .243AI for long range shooting though.

I own a 30-378 for punching out there . my othe concideration was to rebarrell the sps to .260 rem . If i cant get within 500 yards of animal then I probilly shouldn't be shooting at it . I have the 700 action and it shoots well now so putting money into it with a break and trigger seem to be the best option . I would love a longrange cooper but the money is a factor . I also have a 338 with a break but the sweet lil .308 keeps calling to me . if you guys think the 2o inch barrell won't hurt the groups at 500-600 yards then I will probilly trick it out . I'd hate to throw the do into it and not be happy .

Lots of guys shoot tactical matches with 20" .308's. Varget is your friend

Yeah I think I would be putting money into it with up grades like a better stock and trigger over just putting a longer barrel on it. You can make up the extra fps with a faster powder like varget as hammer said. Its hard to say the fps you would gain but in my mind it would not be enough of a factor to make me spend the money on it.

On the other hand a sexy varmint contour24",  5R, custom 11 twist barrel would be awful sexy. You would want to stick a light in one end and stare down that perfect bore for hours. :) :hunt2: maybe that's just me. :o

so I went and ordered the bell carolson tactical stock . Im gonna take it the shooters sharp and have Claude accurize it and install a break . most likley I will go with the jewell trigger . my mind isn't made up on th scope yet I have a nikon bdc 4x14 on it now . I really wanted to go with 30mm huskima 5-20 . he said that he could probilly get me to 800 yards on the turret . I may go that way and if I dont like it I will use it on my 30-378. he said he would work a load up and it will shot 1/2 moa . I'm ok with 800 yards I just want a accurate riffle and how often will i get the chance to shoot that far right .

probilly a #4 hart 26 inch with a 1-8 twist and I think i will still go with a break for accuracy

Sounds good, that 8 twist will shoot everything. It really spins those 95 gr V-Max up, makes for some spectacular hits on Rochchucks.

Do you guys know if I will have a length issue using the 140 vlds in the 700 short action ?
Title: Re: rem 700 sps .308
Post by: coachcw on February 18, 2012, 06:38:48 PM
well after some measurements on the 140's we decided to go with a long action and the 6.5 x 284 to get the ke at 1000 yards . the combo shot be pushing 1400 lbs at 1000 yards with the 140 accubonds . kinda leaned that way since they perform better from 200-400 over the vlds.

I have had two 6.5-284's built in the past and I used a long action on both, excellent cartridge. You will be very pleased.
