Title: thigh holster recommendations
Post by: vandeman17 on February 14, 2012, 03:39:13 PM
I am looking to get a thigh holster for my sidearm. I have a belt style holster right now and it gets in the way when I have my pack on or when I am carrying my rifle. Do any of you have one that you like? I have searched online and found some good ones but they are pretty spendy and I would prefer not to drop $100 for one...

Check out the Leapers UTG Extreme Ops Leg Rig, about $30 at cheaperthandirt.com. I have one and it works pretty well for the price.  :twocents:

That looks pretty solid. I might have to pick me up one. Will be nice to have that during the summer too when I am out hiking around or camping.

When it comes to thigh holsters the Kydex platform type are much better than the all nylon. I have used a BlackHawk thigh holster for years(All nylon) Im constantly adjusting it, it wants to roll to the back of the thigh a little no matter how tight you get your leg straps. A real pain when it comes to running or entering
/ exiting vehicles.  You can run a Kydex plateform with a nylon holster or Kydex holster whichever you prefer.

Remember you want that holster to be just low enough to clear your gear, vest, coat etc. When you see these clowns with them strapped clear down by their knee they are worthless unless your static, there is no way to run or maneuver with a full size handgun flopping all over the place. Make sure which ever model you get has a excellent retention system, especially if your humping through the ruff thick stuff, nothing sucks more than spending part of a hunting day looking for a handgun.

I use this Blackhawk Tactical holster
http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Level-3-SERPA-Light-Bearing-Tactical-Holster,1178,119.htm
It is more then the price you wanted.
For a thigh rig it works well, and with the quick disconnect you can use the same Serpa II on your hip, pack, vehicle, or anywhere you mount the quick disconnect. As I get older I find that a thigh rig while perfect in a "Tactical situation" is cumbersome when I hunt.
When hunting, I use a Serpa II (off hand) away from my rifle sling. attached to my pack's belt. There are a ton of adapters available.
Jackalope had some really good pics of his setup on his pack, as well. I searched but did not find it.
