Title: project gun?
Post by: KFhunter on February 15, 2012, 04:53:20 PM
I've got an Interarms Mark X 30-06 I picked up years ago from a logger who screwed himself up and couldn't shoot it.

I've wacked a lot of deer with it - and other things - but can't get it under 1 moa @ 100 yards factory ammo,

wondering what I might do with this thing to get my first custom gun going?

similar gun here,  mauser type action

the blueing is funny, if you scratch it its shiny underneath - I think its nickleplated.  Anyways its very shiny like the one in the link there too.  Only 1 small scratch on the barrel.

the barrel is very long too, very skinny

I can't remember

ya, I'd be guessing at it.   I bought a new one for it a few years ago and spent I think around 300 bucks.

probably bushnell

First near MOA with factory ammo is a very good shooting sporter weight rifle and you might not be able to do any better with factory ammo no matter how much money you put into it.  They Mark X is a nice action and has a good trigger.  Adjusting the trigger for a nice clean break around 2-3 lbs. and bedding the action will help.  Have the crown checked for any damage.

Now here are a couple of questions you have to ask yourself.  Have I shot sub MOA groups with rifles that kick like an 06 in the past?  Have I tried premium match ammo in the rifle?  Do I know anyone that is an experienced hand loader that can load match grade ammo to test in this rifle?

You can put alot of money ito this rifle and not get it to shoot any better, but you can build a classic, beautiful hunting rig.  The Mauser action has a slower lock time and is not as rigid as a newer Rem or custom action.  So you have a couple strikes against you trying to build a super accurate rifle on it.

thanks for the input

I've always shot remington core lokt thru it in usually 150 grain, at the turkey shoots I don't ever win the turkey with it, but I get close to 1 moa @ 100 yards.

I picked up a box of hornady superperformance, I'll see if that is any better.

good thing though is I have a lot of confidence with it, I've never lost a deer with it, or anything else for that matter.
