Title: Calling Muleys
Post by: Encore 280 on February 17, 2012, 06:46:51 AM
Was watching 'em hunt muleys last nite on one of the huntin channels. This guy was using some kind of a call and it was really getting the muelys spun up, I couldn't believe it!! Anyone ever see this done?

Yeah, I called a mule deer in for my dad that he killed.

The deer was so rutty that I called it in at 10 - 15 feet, he didn't like something turned and started to go, I called again and he turned to face us and then went to leave again, I called again and he stopped broadside at 25 yards and my dad shot it (archery).  It was friggin' cool.  I used one of those Deer Talkers - little flat brown calls.

A buddy of mine called a Coues deer back after it was sort of minorly perturbed with whatever we had going on with a Primos grunt tube in AZ and I shot that but it was a whitetail and I guess you'd sort of expect that more.

I've never seen that before. It wasn't a grunt tube but kinda of a loud whine call. Maybe it was a fawn in distress call or something cuz the does would really come running in but the bucks weren't too sure. Whatever it was it worked.

What type of call is it and who makes it?

Its a predator call, and its not who makes it, its how you use it.   Ricks distress works, Rainshadows works.   There are also grunt tubes to use during the rut.   Make sure you get a muledeer specific one versus a whitetail one unless you know how to modify it as they are different.

Cool! Thanks Bone. Nah, I wouldn't even try a grunt tube on a muley. It did sound like some kind of a predator call too. He was whalen on it pretty good. Thanks again.

you'll note its usually the smaller class bucks that come in.   I have only killed one decent buck with that method, though admittedly I rarely use it.

I have called in some doe while coyote hunting with a rabbit call. They were pissed off deer. Ears back, snorting, and stomping their feet.

I've called in more does then anything.... 4 decent non mature bucks.... And one mature buck.... Which my buddy missed twice @ 25-40 yards...... I dropped him at 50..... Most with a doe bleat..... Some with a grunt.... Shot a cougar doing this last year....

The last year you could bow hunt late in the Entiat ( without a permit ) I called in a nice 4x4 with a grunt tube. Worked out very well. He came in nose on the ground and fast, you gotta be ready.

A fawn distress or bawl will kill a lot of deer. They can't help but come check out whats going on "if they have not already been pressured".

That is the most persuasive part of it right there.... Pressure on on or not so much.... Depending on tag and area/time of year of course.....  Might as well throw weather in there.....

ive done it calling coyotes using a fawn distress works wonders. haha really pisses the does off thought i was gonna get trampled the one time. also a good way to get a bedded buck up for the shot.

These calls work great. I've read the book and watched the video, some interesting info. I've had pretty good luck using these calls through the years.

I read that 'Deer Talk' book a little while ago, shot a coyote a month back using the rock throwing method and got 4-5 mule deer up from it as well

We had Dan Martin of Martin Archery up at the Lodge a couple years ago.He and I made a stalk on a group of mulies that included a nice 4x4. Spooked them inadvertently and Dan whips out a little wood call and started blowing it. Everyone of those mulies came back uphill and downwind with in 25 yds. The nice buck stuck his head and part of his neck over the rise in the hill and Dan turned down the shot. Did not want to have him jump the string and not hit him right. . The call was one that Martin Archery sold years ago as a predator call. He sent me three in the mail....They work.

I think the chances are greater when they are with does ....doe is always coming to a frawn in distress if she hears it and then walter will follow
