Title: Hunter Orange
Post by: swanny on February 17, 2012, 08:19:38 AM
Does a color have to be called "Blaze Orange" in order to be legal? I've been wanting to get a waterproof jacket for the Wetside that is bright orange, curious if this in "Flash Orange" would be okay most likely?

Yep,  that'll work

I don't think there's anything in the law specifying the exact shade of orange that is required. So I think if it's orange it's legal. That jacket looks a lot brighter than some of the old, faded orange vests I've seen guys wearing.

That's kind of what I have figured but wasn't sure if there was an exact rule stating how bright of an orange it had to be.

No problems with that orange. The point is just be visible.

The WAC states the clothing must be "fluorescent hunter orange".  I don't think every shade of orange would necessarily qualify, although there is no specific definition.

I agree I think if it's bright then it will be just fine. I have seen a lot of orange vests in different shades over the years. As long as they stand out and are bright I could never see anyone getting in trouble over it. I can't stand people that take it off. Or don't use any when required :bash: Common sense people

The Marmot jacket looks fine.  It is a judgment call, but if you look at these two photos I think you would see why.

OK/Not OK

the whole deal is can another hunter see you as a shootable animal or something else.  something else qualiafies(sp, how the hell do you spell that) as lots of stuff but a big bright orange thing is not what i would shoot or eat.  mike w

I use a faded orange jacket all the time. The UV brighter is what most deer see anyway. If i get harassed by game officials by my faded appearance we are going to have a loooooong talk. Its for my own safety anyway so if i'm willing to go with a more faded version who am  i really hurting? I'm not dressed in a black fleece like a bear....  :twocents:

You can buy hunter orange vests for $10 or less at almost every sporting goods store in the fall.  Buy one, wear it and you're legal regardless of what is underneath.

What part of his post are you saying is not true?

Are you saying the $10 or less vests are not 400 square inches?

yes 400 square inches. Typicaly a vest and hat. I have never heard of a agent getting out a tape measure. But look at small kids, there is no way that their vest is 400 square inches.
If you have vest on most game agents will not bother you. I have been checked many times with a black hat and an orange vest. Never anything said.

And in this state cammo orange is legal.

400 sq inches is only 20"x20"...think about how little you could make with that much fabric...

Exactly. If you have a orange vest, you don't also need a hat. Just the vest will do. You could almost get by with just an orange hat, if it were a sombrero.   :chuckle:

I heard an unsubstantiated story of someone that did create a legal orange hat.  Of course, it would take a mighty big head to have that much orange, so it makes the story suspect. :chuckle:

Baseball caps or knit caps only contain about 100square inches of surface area.
For a size 7.5 hat + / -

"If a baseball hat were the shape of a hemishere, the area would be 2x 3.14 x radius squared. so a size 7 and a half would have a radius of 3.75 inches. 2 x 3.14 x 3.75 x 3.75 =88.31 sq inches Then the area of the bill must be added. It appears that a man's XL orange baseball cap would just make the 100 sq inches. However a man's small or youth size would not.

The interesting part is that those orange knit watch caps wouldn't make 100 sq inches unless the person had a size 8 head. "

Apparently in PA they have 2 different restrictions for Blaze orange. A hat is sufficient for hunting ground hogs but 250 square is required for deer.

So in this state you only need 2 15x10in plates on your body with a ball cap.

For the year 2012 it is no longer hunter orange as the "in " color, all the fashionable hunters will be sporting Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward. Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,”
Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”
Tangerine Tango will surely carry through to fall fashion as well.... :chuckle:

Unless you tie two orange baby bibs together and wear one in front and one in back like a vest then just about any orage vest is going to give you 400 sq. inches.  Not all, but most.

20" is not that big....or at least that's what she said  :yike:
