Title: Big Boar Scent Checking and Scratching
Post by: billythekidrock on February 25, 2012, 11:05:01 PM
This was last spring in an area that had a couple boars as well as a sow with cubs. I was hoping to catch the cubs playing with mother in their beds, but this big guy came along instead.

BTKR-  About when do the bears start coming out of their dens for the year on the wet side?

Well first I can tell you that no matter what date I tell you, someone will agree and another will tell you that I am wrong.

I have seen tracks and sign of feeding as early as January at about 600 ft elevation but generally I see more bears or sign starting in late March. Depending on the area, the first sign I usually find are tracks and sign of feeding or bed/turds/feeding activity.

I usually see the most camera activity during April/May/June when I can put the cams on a natural food source and the boars start looking for a little attention.

The boar in the video only checked that area that one time then moved on. There was another good sized boar with a collar only a few dozen yards away that I caught on another cam one day earlier. He was only there one day as well. The sow and cubs (vids coming soon) were there every couple days for about 3 weeks.

The video below is of the collared bear I mentioned above. He was only 50 yards or so away from bedding area where the bear was caught scratching.
