I was discussing this with Happy Gilmore this morning over coffee give us your thoughts.
We were thinking of putting on a show off your dog day for Hunt-WA members. It would be a great way for new dog owners wanting to learn about training their dog. Also for those who are thinking about getting a dog but not sure what breed they want, come watch the breeds work. Owners who might have a little hiccup they want to fix, a way to swap lies about hunting and possible meeting of new hunting partners. Or for those who just want to show off their dog working.
First and foremost this would not be a competition. We would ask that all egos be left at the front gate. It is just about watching dogs work in the field. We would have fields set up for Retrievers, Flushers and Pointers. We would have some of the top NW local trainers here to watch and answer any questions one might have about their dog and training methods. And get a chance to watch some of the top N.W. dogs doing what they do best.
The thought would be to do 3 of these this Spring and Summer. Come get your dog evaluated, go home with some ideas to put into your training regime and come back later and do it all over again. The cost would just be your travel and price of birds. We would be using Pigeons, Quail, Chucker, Pheasant and Mallards. Current pricing is $5.00, $8.00, $10.00,$15.00 and $15.00 respectively. All shooting would be done by designated shooters for safety reasons.
Thinking out loud the first one would be sometime in April in S.W. Washington around the Chehalis area. The Second one in June in the Fall City area, Then one in August in the Bellingham area.
So please give us your thoughts and ideas.

Well since my dog is too old now and I cannot comit to a new dog while this one is still breathing, I would help you out. I love watching the dogs work and have been around a fair amount of hunt tests. So, Fall City or Bellingham I am there for you if you need gofer.

Wouldn't have it any other way... There are also 7 Pointer hunt tests in the coming two months so, Richard (Bluemoon) will be busy running his string of dogs for pretty much two months straight, every weekend...

I love this idea. One i would love to see how my Boykin has responded from his stroke and would love to see if my weimer has any bird ability in him at all.
-
Sounds like a good time. I don't have a dog but would like to come watch and would be happy to help in any way I could at the Fall City event.
-
Thanks for all the response it sounds like we can make this work. The reason I picked Chehalis as the first area was cost. I would hold it at my kennels where I have the homers for fly aways, and I have the insurance, porta potty, etc, etc.. However if the general consensus is for the Fall City area we could make that work. It would just cost a little more for the use of the property I would want to compensate the land owner for the use of his property and pigeons. I will look into this.
Don't worry Pens Fan, It will be on a test/trial free weekend not only for the pointing breeds but the Spaniels as well, I have 4 Springers in that will be testing this Spring. We'll do are best to pick a free weekend.
Gas-Man you hit it right this is a meet and greet and we get to play with our dogs.
Please keep all the ideas and feedback coming it sound like this will be a great time!
One thing I won't be held accountable for is beers missing from ice chests (Paul?)

Sounds like a real fun time. It'd be great to meet you guys. Work schedule allowing, count me in.
PS. Does anyone know of a Boykin breeder/kennel here in the NW that may be making an appearance?
-
I'll take care of the property fee at Carlson's Richard. Just need to put a few dates on the board.

i work every other weekend and with turkey season and springer trials i may not be able to squeeze anything ini could take a couple of vacation days if i have enough notice
There at pretty much two northwest Boykin breeders i know ofand i am one of them
the other is in Oregon
not Romars he retired from what i hear
I am not really a full fledged breeder so to speak

I'd consider hosting in Chelan. It's much more centrally located, plus who doesn't want to be in Chelan! Party and training sounds like Vegas!
-
I think there is enough people in favor of this I am going to make it sticky

Hello all
Taking a snow day off today so got a chance to throw out some dates to have our "Bird Dog Day". After plowing through the AKC web site for upcoming Hunt Test and Field Trials. The date that I think would work best is April 28th a Saturday. The only event that weekend is a walking field trail for pointing breeds at Sauvie Island. After that it get crazy for trials and test for everyone for the next few months.
Paul how does this look for your calender. It did sound like your place was more centrally located for those wanting to do this.
Keep any thoughts and ideas coming or alternative dates ideas. Reading current posts it sounds like there are a good number of new pups and owners out there. For those, this will be a good time to soak up many ideas of what you want out of your dog. And how to train for it. Learn from all of our mistakes! :yike:
Richard

will definitely try and make this. anything i can do to help let me know. thanks.
-
sounds great. Has a date been picked yet?
-
Sounds like fun I will bring Lola out for sure...... Unless it is in Eastern WA..
Keep it in Chehalis or Fall City I am in. Chehalis sounds better since you are already set up.

Hello all
We are still going to make this happen, but in all actuality this might not happen until this summer due to a few of us that have trial and test commitments to keep.
Also if we wait until summer we will have better grounds to have this at, where we will also have water for swimming so we can do water work as well.
With all that being said. I know this is last minute but if there of some of you that would like to get together this coming Saturday March 31st. I will set the day aside here at the kennel, come on down to Onalaska and play with your dog and lets meet one another. I will have birds here for working your dog. Let me know if this sounds good to any of you.
-
I'm having a hard time finding open time too Richard. We're booked solid here at the farm starting April 7th through June 2-3. Something going on pretty much every single weekend.
-
i plan on being there on saturday. hopefully a few more people.
-
Richard, just sent you a PM. I'll be there Saturday with my Britanny pup, thinking about bringing the Setter as well.

Tried to send you a PM. however your mailbox is full and won't any messages.
So far there is about 5 people from Hunt-WA that are coming out today.
There is also a couple lady hunter/shooters coming out with their dogs as well.
( One is single gentlemen has great bird dogs and shotguns )
This is happening rain won't stop anything.
Tomorrow is an all Vizsla day. I don't know how much time there would be to work anyone else's dog. However if someone wanted to watch some of the top Vizsla's in North America work, feel more than welcome to come watch. We will also be introducing about 6 pups to birds and gunfire.
Richard

Have a great day you guys. Sorry I can't make it, really wanted to get down there..
-
Great day at Tuxedo Kennel, wide variety of bird dogs working the field - viszla, english pointer, Italian Spinone, boykin spaniel, black lab, brittany, and an english setter who did his own thing. The sun even came out in the afternoon. Richard puts on a good event.
-
Richard, thanks for hosting such a fun day. it was a real pleasure watching someone as you working with the dogs. you obviously know what you're doing. great to meet other people that enjoy working with dogs. hopefully we can get together again before i go north.thanks again !!! geoff
-
Had an absolute blast. Mace hit the woods running right out of the truck when ee got home. Thanks for all the work and time with Bogy. great people, greater dogs, even greater time!
-
Just want to re interate what everyone else said, Saturday was a blast. Pens-fan
thanks for bring Mace and Boogy, I have a soft spot for the Boykins. You have my up most respect for getting Boogy back, stick with him he's going to be one heck of a dog. Sockeye I'll just say is if Raven ever ends up missing don't look for her down here :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:. I'll take real good care of her...O- wait she's not here. Willjohn what can be said about Miss Sadie you know what you've got there, I would say after this hunting season your hunting partners will be switching to Brittany's vs their GSP's after they watch her doing her thing.
Thanks again to all that came down. I look forward to doing this again on a larger scale this summer to meet more Bird Dogs and of course more Hunt-Wa members.
Regards
Bluemoon

I just found this thread and would be very interested in attending something like this. Ive got a 4 month old lab with a pointing blood line and could really use some tips and on training along with seeing how other people are doing it. Hopefully something gets planned for this summer. The Fall city location would be best for me.
-
Sounds like a fun time I would be in for at least Chehalis. Just realized this has already happened but if you do it next year could count me in.

Is there another one of these going on soon?

It would be cool to bring it back. I have a setter and would love to meet other guys around the state who run upland dogs. Summer would work best so I can circle back then.
-
I was snooping around today. I would love to see something like this. I am using Mike Lardy’s total retriever 2 and could use someone to train with.
I have tried to screw my dog up to the best of my ability but he is coming along nicely.
