Title: Receive a complimentary Discover Pass
Post by: Boss .300 winmag on March 07, 2012, 02:06:54 PM
Receive a complimentary Discover Pass
Volunteers who work 24 hours on agency-approved projects can earn a complimentary annual pass. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Parks and the Washington Department of Natural Resources will provide vouchers to volunteers, recording the number of hours they worked on agency projects. Volunteers can redeem the voucher(s) for an annual Discover Pass. The three agencies are currently developing the details of the volunteer program, such as where and how volunteers get vouchers, a list of agency-approved projects and procedures for redeeming vouchers.

Discover Pass at

Seems like a reasonable alternative to giving the state money.

So essentially they are paying you a little over a dollar an hour to work for them since the pass is 30 bucks.   :chuckle:

As long as the project hours are applicable towards a volunteer Discover Pass and legitimate for your Master Hunter hours, yes.

No frickin way am I going to waste my time helping on one of their "agency-approved projects" so I can save $30.

Apparently they only value your time to the tune of about a buck an hour. :ass:

I agree, this is just stupid. I could see MAYBE doing 8 hours of work for a free pass, but 24 hours, NO WAY. My time is worth a lot more than that. Funny thing is, my kids and I used to pick up trash up in Capitol Forest anytime I was up there in my truck. Now I can't go up there because I don't have a pass, so I don't know who's picking up all the garbage.

I also hear they're not writing tickets for not having the Discover pass in Capitol Forest. So this is great, they're keeping a lot of the honest people out, and letting many of the dis-honest people have free run of the place. Less people up there to watch for thieves stealing firewood, brush, cedar boughs, etc.

If they would actually enforce it up there I wouldn't even mind so much having to buy it. I'd feel like I was getting something for my money- LESS PEOPLE. That might make it well worth it. But if they don't enforce it, why should I have to pay when most people will not?

Why would they not enforce it in the capitol forest?

Based on a question posed at IST for Hunter ed to Srgt. Cline. He has not worked out the details for a free pass with anyone. Concerning Hunter Education Instructors.

While I agree that Bic hour isn't worth time,  I do think that the work done by voluntaries is the focus. Anything I can do to improve wildlife or fishery is worth my time :twocents: if they want to give me a discovery pass as way of some compensation I'll take it

What do you bet one of the projects is putting up a "Discovery Pass Required, Resistance in Futile, I am Lucutis of the Borg..." sign in places... oh wait...  :chuckle:

If I had a family which could participate in the work event I would have them out there.  Say, three of your working all day 7 hours would be 21 hours.  You just need come back one day and you have a pass for two rigs.

Say you have a family which likes to ride motorcycles.  Now you buy passes for those motorcycles.  Now you can have your family work out there and you have your motorcycle passes.
