Title: Heavy Metal!!!
Post by: GreyWolf on March 07, 2012, 10:58:29 PM
So this past weekend, me & some family (& a few friends) hooked up with a few guys from the Quinault Tribe & went out on the river to get into some steelhead. What my cousin caught was, to say the least, an AMAZING fish! I thought I should share a few of the photos with you all!

We named him "Buck Nasty' because of all the scars & bites he had on him.

He came in at 39 1/3" long with a 25 1/2" girth!

We didn't have a scale but it didn't matter to us what he weighed, he was massive!

looks like it's about 32 lbs.   anyone else ever calculate the fish's weight using this formula:
((Girth x Girth) x Length) / 800 = weight in pounds   i've used it quite a bit,.. its very accurate

Thanks for the compliments! I will be sure to pass them on when he gets down from cloud 9.

Thanks for the formula BIGINNER! I've looked up a few different ones (mostly in cm) & wondered how accurate they are. I'll have to try this one out when I get into the Silvers.

Not even close to 32 lbs! Generally steelhead over 20 pounds are at least 40".  That thing is seriously thick though!

I ran the measurements on piscatorial pursuits weight calculator and it came out to about 32 also... granted almost any 20+ pounder is 40+ inches that thing is built like a king and girth adds up faster than length it seems. Either way that fish is a pig

Nice fish!  It is built like a king girth-wise. The tail is not as squared off as I'm used to on a Steelhead either.  Look at the belly on that guy.  He's been rubbing the bottom quite a bit...

Definitely a thick one...

The rules states legal native steelhead can be retained on most river systems over there,,,,EVEN WHITIES :chuckle:
