Title: Project Ultra Mag finally done! Thank you for all your suggestions/experience!
Post by: MDGrand on March 08, 2012, 11:17:24 AM
So, I think I finally got Project Ultra Mag all complete!

I might do one more thing... get a detachable magazine, but we will see.

Short Story:

Rifle started out as a Remington 700 XCR II chambered in 300 RUM

... a solid enough platform.. BUT.. my trigger finger would bang against the trigger guard due to the recoil... the stock was about as hollow as a cow bell.. and the barrel was pretty pencil thin and acceptably accurate but only by a small margin.  In retroscpect I would have saved more money and bought the Sendero.. but I didnt.. anyone reading this that is considering the XCR II in such a chambering.... please consider these factors.

SO.. what was done:

Stock - HS Precision M24, backed up by a Pachmeyer pad
Barrel - Hart #5 stainless steel 26" 1-10 twist - Durracoated (airosol can works pretty good actually!)
Bolt Knob - Badger Ordnance - OD Green
Scope - Huskemaw 5-20 Blue Diamond with Warn Rings and bases
Cheek Peice - Karsten adjustable
Muzzle Brake - Vais

Thank you goes out to those that suggested the..

Vais brake.. VERY happy and VERY surprised at how, although a little lounder, it does not piss off the other people at the range. Anybody considering a brake and I REALLY hated muzzle brakes before this.. should take a long look at these.

Bolt Knob.. from Badger Ordnance.. So much easier to cycle rounds

Gun Smith - Jim Carollo at West Coast Armory installed the brake and did an amazing job. HIGHLY receommend his work.. he turned it around in only a few days.

Here is some before and after pics:
