Title: Tanning Chemical odor
Post by: Encore 280 on March 15, 2012, 10:44:53 AM
Got my elk hide (hair on) back from the tannery yesterday and they did a beautiful job. My question is: How do I get rid of the tanning chemicals smell that's left on it? Just something that I have to deal with and wait for it to go away? Thanks

I was told by a taxidermist to use febreze on it, and other than that, it just takes time for the smell to go away.

Thanks bobcat. I'm headed for the store and gonna give it a try. I wanna speed the process up a bit rather than waiting for it to go away on it's own.

Really nothing you can do.  The smell will either go away or reduce considerably over time.  I wouldn't use fabreze on the skin side.

Some people are more sensitive than others.

I love the smell of tanned leather.  It will go away with a little time.

It doesn't smell anything like tanned leather at all. I took it out of the living room cuz it stunk up the room. Put it in a spare bedroom with hide side up and misted it lightly with Glade air freshener. When I did my own deer hide a couple years ago it sure didn't have any chemical odor to it. Guess I'll just wait. Don't know what they would be able to do if I sent it back. Send me a different hide? :bdid: I sent it in thru a local taxidermist. Think I'll give him a call and see if he knows or maybe give me the number of the place and I'll call and see what it is and if it'll go away like real soon. It's my first elk hide I've had done and it turned out really nice so I want to keep it.

It will dissipate.
