Hi,
Does anyone out here have a recommendation for elk calling training aids (i.e DVDs books etc) that worked well for you. I have never attempted to call elk and want to learn. I prefer to use a diaphram since I bow hunt and use it for turkey hunting. Thanks.

Elknut's Bugling Bulls and Beyond, and Elknut's Playbook. The CD sets each have an MP3 disk I listen to while working out. The CDs stay in the truck. And, he's a site sponsor so you'll be helping to sup[port HuntWA.

I would second elk nut's audio cd. DO NOT practice in your car 100% of the time. You need to practice out side.

There was a big thread on here last year about elk calling. Might want to do a search on it and see if you can find it. It was a real good one. Good luck.

Gentleman,
Thank-you for the responses, I will check out Elknut's Bugling Bulls and Beyond, and Elknut's Playbook.

would recommend trying bugling bulls diaphrams, the brown one for bugling and the yellow for pretty much all other calls. i have used pretty much all the other brands and they were the easiest for me to use.

There is a camp and elk calling class in OR. in Aug. here is a link. Me and a couple buddys are thinking about going. They have a 3d shoot and food for three days. looks like fun!

People will tell you to use this diaphragm call or that... The one thing you need to understand is quality. Look through 10 calls on the rack. If they are exactly the same which means they are anchored at the same spot. Two years ago I looked at an entire rack of diaphrams and it was hard to match four that were the same. I think many of the diaphram calls out there do not have the quality most of us require.
Here is why, If the call is not anchored at the same place and under the same tension then when you will have to relearn pressure and air volumn required to hit the notes. Now take that with changing out a diaphragm in the heat of battle of calling an elk in.
So pick you diaphragms carefully if that means anything to you.
There is another DVD that Joel Turner made a few years ago. He talks about "The Tone" to which the vast majority of the bulls will respond. What ever call you use you need make that tone. Last, you need to go from a bugle to a chuckle. Many calls that are not diaphragm based are difficult to chuckle from.

definitely elknuts dvd's. I went 7 years with out harvesting an elk, studied one of his dvds over a summer and harvested an elk in the fall!

Very informative - thanks

People need to check out "The Gallery," in combination with the other instructional videos on the site and the Elk strategy app (can be used via the website/online or an iPhone, etc.), this is the best instructional material currently available for elk calling and elk hunting strategy - bar none. It will be worth every penny you spend. A muley hunt put out by RHR was posted on the Hunt-Wa deer board a while back - he keeps coming out with great stuff. His most recent turkey hunting material on hunting Merriams in mountain country is good, too.

Elk Nut has real elk sounds. If you pickup CD or DVD make sure it is recording of real elk sounds. If you walk behind elk or get close to them you can listen to their sounds. Then you know what they sound like so you can replicate those sounds.
-
Elknut's (Paul) stuff is great.
There are also a lot of YouTube videos that have live elk vocalizations and calling.
-
Elknuts DVD's taught me a lot, but I thought the actual Elk sounds part could have been better, Great set !!
Roe Hunter resources is an awesome site also, annual membership is affordable, and well worth the money...
......................
Berry Game Calls were what I used when I started calling 20+ years ago, but they changed the tape (and name ?) on them, and they just seemed different.. :dunno:
I now just get whatever single reed diaphragms I find, seems like anymore I can get whatever sound I want out of any of them, but some "blow out" pretty fast (cheap materials) so I have to buy a couple, plus I always lose one...

World hunter if your intetested in Elknuts products send me a PM. It is very informative stuff.

Get ahold of Joel Turner. Or look his stuff up on Youtube, he also has some articles to read. He's amazing.

Paul (aka. Elknut) is the man. He will improve your chances of killing an elk 10-fold. 4 elk in 2 years thanks in large part to Paul, and I was pretty successful before I stumbled into his material.

I would second the motion for JOEL TURNER. Not only is Joel an amazing elk caller but he is an equally capable teacher (hard to find that combination). He is gracious and willing to help out even those beyond help (Like me) :hello:. Try the tale end of the Lethal Release video for some good tips too. :twocents:

Jim horn JR has some good cd's aswell. don't get hung up on having the best bugle in the woods . learn what a elk is looking for at what time . while hunting and making noise in the woods play with your cow calls and soft lil bugles , you may be surprised who answers back. I think alot of hunters get stuck with either just cow calling or bugleing and don't mix it up. If your bugling a bull and he just answers , then close the gap and mix in other calls to try to trigger a reaction . remember while hunting preasured areas you need to tone it down , locate and move in . not many bulls in hunted areas will come running in from a half mile . good luck.

Guys thanks for recommendation! I appreciate it very much! Anyone can say try this or that but the real proof in what works & what's theory is in the results from actual hunters themselves & their successes! Can calling work, you bet! Does learning what to say when & what sounds are best for certain situations really work, absolutely! Please check out these Testimonials & Photos for yourself & you be the judge. Thanks!

Joel usually puts on clinic's around the state depending on the shop who wants to host him. He has been all over and I would go if you have a chance. Total stud and I have not heard anyone in this state that can out call him.
I would keep your eye on this site as when that time comes this summer it is usually posted on here as to his clinic locations.

As someone who began calling 20 years ago, with Berry's Best Big Bull Mfg (?) diaphragms, I thought I was as good as anyone else I heard, I still got more action (after location) with my Sceery "Ace"
I read, everything that is out there, have sat through seminars, have watched videos... etc...
After buying the compleate set of DVD's and everthing (except for the calls, as I can use a blade of grass if I have to..) I learned WHY sometimes they (the Elk) did what they did.
I had so many moments while watching the videos that I slapped my self in the head saying "Duh!"
I am one of those that was making all the right sounds, for all the wrong reasons, sometimes I got lucky, but now I make my own "Luck", my Elk seasons will never be the same.
I do not care how good you sound, real elk sometimes sound crappy, but the right sound, in the right moment...
