i dont know any thing about that unit but i just looked in my 2012 oregon regs and it looks like a good unit 1'539 aps last year and 21 tags not to mention all of november to hunt we went to oregon in 09 and killed 3 out of 4 for black tail bucks not 2 far from were your wanting to hunt we talked to some cool loggers and they said tou dont even start to see the big blacktails till thanksgiving i no the unit you want 2 hunt is the east side controlled huntmule deer but it must be a good unit if that many people put in i know if you get drawn ull do good oregon is the most under rated state in the lower 48 i asume you have the 2012 oregon regs since they come out by december before the new year washing get with it already

It will be a great hunt if and when you draw the tag. They only give out 1 nonresident tag every other year. If you don't have 15 points this year don't bother putting in for it. Next year the one tag goes to an OR outfitter and then the following year it will more than likely tag 17 points. If you do draw it expect a world class hunt with a lot of time to get it done. You have the rut and a migration combined. Good luck!

Yup been putting in for this for 7 years now. Starting to think its not worth it. I will be 60 by the time i get drawn if im lucky.  Not to high jack a thread. But wich tag would be the next best one to apply for.  I hate the fact you have to buy a lisence just to apply...GAY!!!!!!

Not sure what you mean by "which tag" to apply for. Do you mean which species? Or another deer hunt? Have you been applying for Metolius?

There are a lot of good opportunity hunts in Oregon if you do the research, for instance somebody mentioned WhiteRiver, there are I believe 3 different draw hunts for the area, the late one being the hard one to acquire, but there is an easier draw in the same area earlier in the year to hunt the same deer, may have to work a little harder, may be a little higher up in elevation, but same opportunity at a decent buck.  I see nobody mentioned PineCreek, your problem is you have to many points now to put in for a hunt you could have drawn years ago, it would be a waste of points, may as well hold out for the hard to draw hunts now.

Spin05 with the points you have I would do the applegate muzzle tag for sure you have to many points to draw an easy tag but not enough for a super tag applegate is an awesome tag!

Another option to consider, is that with 7 points, you could split them with one other person and still be able to draw the majority mule deer hunts in Oregon. No, it may not be a "premium" hunt but most likely still a lot better than anything here in Washington.

I wouldn't waist 15 points on the White River rut tag. My dad draws the early season tag every year and I used to hunt it when I lived down there. The biggest buck we've taken was a 120's benchleg that I shot quite a few years ago. I went down and helped my dad out 2 years ago and didn't see nearly the bucks that I used to. Granted with the rut and migration going on you could get into some different animals but I just can't see throwing 15 points at it. IMO.

There are a couple of good muzzleloader hunts for blacktails that you could draw with 7 points, if you're into that. I'm not sure what there is for archery permits other than Metolius. I know there are some pretty good over-the-counter hunts for archery blacktails.
