Not good. Ate one about 7 years ago doing survival training. It really was the foulest meat I have ever eaten. I have spoken to people that say the young ones are edible if you "cook them right" (not exactly sure what that means), but I can tell you without question that a big male roasted on a spit is absolutely "survival only" fare... :chuckle:
Most people only need to start gutting one and get a good whiff to know what I am talking about...

I thought that was the case but couldn't find the source to document that. Do you know where it is stated?
Page 71 of the Big Game hunting pamphlet lists the "Protected Species". Page 62, the Small Game Seasons page, lists the classified species. Yellow Bellied Marmots, also called Rockchucks or Whistle Pigs, are not classified. HTH...

It's been a few years, but I used to shoot them over on the rocky side of Buttercup just behind Waitsburg. Gotta get permission from the landowner though. When I did it she would only allow you to shoot a .22

I'd call those little things a "twitter pig". That's the sound they make--a soft twitter. Yellow Bellied Marmots give a loud warning whistle. I've whistled and had them answer me. They're bigger, too, like the ones the boys got.

When I was a kid we used to blow into an empty .22lr shell and they would answer back.

Just south of Creston on highway 2 is 12,500 acres of DNR land called Swanson Lake. In the center of all that sage is a bunch of shale rock out crops with busted up shale at the base. The chucks like to hang out near the little cliffs. They can be hard to see because thet are the same color as the rocks. Look for movement. I have shot some chucks out there as late as the mid 90's. There is dirt 4x4 roads to get around out there. Nothing that you would even get into 4 wheel drive for.

In Idaho they call them whistle pigs :dunno::yeah: when I used too live near Boise the locals all called sage rats whistle pigs.
