Title: Orange for Coyotes on public land?
Post by: mr user on March 27, 2012, 11:48:49 AM
I'm going to go out coyote hunting on some public land near monroe soon with my dad.  This will be our first time coyote hunting and our first time in that area.  I don't want to get shot by some idiot, but I also don't know if coyotes see the color orange and would be suspicious of it.  Should we wear hunter's orange or just full out camo?

I've been dressed as orange as a pumpkin during deer season and had coyotes trot within 40 yards of me clueless to my presence , there color blind I believe

Better safe than sorry. I think you could combine orange while on the move then mabye stow it while making your stand. I wear a bright hat when out and about....especially during bear season or any other modern firearm season. Another thing...if you happen to meet somebody at the gate or area chat them up, let them know you are out huting. I was exploring a new area a bit ago and met a guy and daughter at the gate. They were gearing up for some yote calling. We chatted a bit and I knew where they were heading in general. I made an effor to give them a mile or so of distance.

Red looks tan or yellowish to a coyote's vision.  Their eyes are keen to movement, though.  You can stand in a wheat field dressed head to toe in flourescent orange, and as long as you don't move, they can't see you.  Wind direction favorable, of course.

I wouldn't feel right wearing orange while hunting predators. I'd go with full camo and something to cover your face as well. There shouldn't be many hunters out this time of year. If you're really concerned you could wear an orange hat while walking into your stand, then take it off while calling, and switch it out with a camo hat.

I think BIRDS can see color.  Might not be a good idea to wear orange... :dunno:

Two years ago, I had a flock of 23 turkeys file past me at less than 15 yards while I stood in the open in blaze orange while deer hunting.  They seemed more worried about the grunting noise in the trees below us than the big pumpkin they could see.   :chuckle:

If I was predator hunting on public land, and worried about it, I would probably take a piece of orange and just hang it in an exposed, non-moving location, nearby.

Coyotes are color blind but they can see colors just not like us. They can see orange I think but not as we do.

I saw a Coyote out deer hunting this year and I called him into about 10ft in front of me. Nothing between him or I. I was wearing blaze orange hat and coat. He winded me and took off, but he was looking right at me the whole time he was coming in. I don't think it matters about the orange.

Ok found the study on it again. Dogs see "VIBYYYR" (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, and Red). The colors Green, Yellow, and Orange all look alike to dogs; but look different from Red and different from the various Blues and Purples. Dogs are very good at telling different shades of VIB apart. Finally, Blue-Green looks White to dogs
So that tells me that a bright orang would be a different shape then the surroundings unless it's fall I'm the leaves.

coyotes don't see colors like humans, wear orange i9f it makes you feel safe, and you can focus on the hunt, check the wind, move real slow and sit still when your calling.  good luck
