Post by: Humptulips on March 27, 2012, 07:38:41 PM
Pulling traps today and had a pretty good day.
When you hear people talk about red coastal cats this what they are talking about.

Brought this one back to the road in the trap.

I still have a few traps out and I had a hit from another cat at a spot so hopeing to get one more. We will see. All my water sets are pulled.

Nice! So what's the secret to getting those cats to go into the traps?

With only three cats for the year I'm hardly one to ask.
Trying to develop a better trap and I keep experimenting but have not found the answer yet.
A new idea has come to me. I'll build the traps and test it next year.
Time will tell.

Nice job, you feeling better?

Not really. Nights and morning are the worst. Maybe getting four hours sleep a night.
My Dad told me I'm so sore because I'm over doing it. He may be right.

Hi Bruce
Just was wondering what the poundage might be to start the door to move and what it is at the top.

Hi Bruce

Not understanding the question I guess. Which trap, cat trap or beaver/otter trap?

Cat trap is the outward hanging  door, 90 degrees to door frame. Can't recomend it.

Water trap, the door is hinged at top with the 220 conibear spring to activate it. trigger is similar to the swim throughs until you get to the part the animal actually hits which is a conibear style trigger. You can adjust the amount it takes to trigger it but very similar to a 220 trigger for poundage. I prefer to have the trigger pretty stiff. If it springs to easy the water will spring it when high.

I lied a little when I said I pulled all the water sets on that check.  I had one water set I left out only because I didn't have room in the PU for any more traps. Picked up everything else on Friday. That trap I couldn't fit in the PU had an otter in it. Picked up a very soggy looking cat and a civet also.
Didn't take any pictures though.

Bruce, got some 160 conibear springs to add to my swim thru traps, haven't add them yet. Just wondering how you set them? Do you us the safety's to hold the springs closed? Thought a guy could slip a hook thru top of cage and pull spring closed and wire it in place then do the second spring. Now tell me how you set them if you don't mind, or did I figure it out?

You're pretty close. I have two safety hooks. I pull a door up and hook the door to the top of the cage so that it is open. Do the other door with the other hook and then set the trap. I had to build a door in the top of the trap so I could set it.
Then remove the hooks.
Found out it is mandatory to tie the two hooks together with a piece of heavy string. Otherwise they get lost real quick.

Love the skunks. Sold them all for $18 straight through. Sold the glands too at a dollar a piece. I'm happy.
