Title: Opening Weekend
Post by: Mandownitis on March 29, 2012, 05:22:51 PM
I am working on getting things set up for the opener at the end of April.  Making the trip to Mineral again.  This year we will be targeting Snagger for sure..  He will win the derby!

Anybody else have plans for the opener?

I too will be avoiding it. I get too many blank stares when I answer the question of "When's the Opener?" with "Which lake?". A great many WA anglers refuse to look at the fishing regs. and thus, miss out on great fishing in the year round and early opening lakes. I tell people that WA manages its lakes and streams individually; so you need to read those regulations...Just look up the lake or stream.

that reminds me of a bad experience i had when i was about 12.  i was fishing a little pond down the road from my parents house around mid april.  all of a sudden one of lacey's finest comes walking down and tells me i have to go home because lakes don't open until the last saturday of the month.  i ran home and my dad called up WDFW who confirmed that it was indeed open and that the local cops don't have any jurisdiction in those matters.

I will be spending the weekend down in grays harbor and fishing a couple lakes down there.  I do it every year and fish with my grandpa it's alot of fun.  Man how long is it gonna take somebody to finally catch snagger??  anybody ever thought of using heavier gear and maybe salmon lures?.  If I am correct I hear that fish is over 20 pounds or something.

i always find it funny and it never fails on opening weekend.. we try to hit one of the lakes that have been open year round trying for some bass to avoid the weekend opening crowd for trout.. but only to find the boat launch with several rigs talking about "finally opening weekend and we can fish"  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I'll probably head out sunday evening after most people clear out.  I'll catch and release, no reason to keep those mushy little buggers.

I guess Snagger is still in the lake.  Believe it or not,  but he took my fishing rod right out of the holder last year.  Could not grab it quick enough.

I plan on bear hunting out by Monroe that weekend. Shouldn't be more than 20 people out that way, 25 at most.  :chuckle:

I know that Mineral and other lakes are a mess on the opener.  I have the trailer set up in the campground.  Myself and a few buddies hang out and have a beer or two,  play some cribbage and tell stories.  Sometimes it is a little loud at night.  But in the morning the lake is pretty quiet.  Don't have to mess around with launching the boat because it is already in the water.  Just a fun time with the guys.

Is Snagger a real fish?

You think that someone fishing for planter trout would be able to land Snagger?  I believe someone would have to target a large fish like that.  Seem to be very aggressive.

Maybe Jeremy Wade from River Monsters could catch him  :chuckle:

Was up at the lake this weekend.  Man what great weather!  Over looking the lake Saturday evening,  saw a Very Large fish surface.  Not sure if it was Snagger or not?  But the fish  was Huge!  I think the winner of the derby will go 15 Plus pounds for sure this year!  Dang it...

Mineral is more of a party deal than fishing the crowd is fun and i dont miss it hardly ever. a few years ago i caught a 35 inch rainbow, last my buddie caught a 36 inch brown. over the years many 3-5 pounders on the opener. seems to be a few bigger ones running in there, starting to get like the old days again. i love the place, been going there since 85. everybody should experience the mineral opener atleast once in their life time lol.

I personally like fishing after the opener.  Hardly as many people and the fishing is usually just as good.  I still fish the opener every year though.

Trout are supposed to be caught after they go to the ocean for 2 or 3 years and come back.   :twocents:

i think ill skip fishing altogether this year.$30 for a freshwater license is a joke.just cant see spending that much for stocker trout.

There are a lot more than trout to fish for in this state. Learn where to go and how to fish for other species that are actually worth catching and maybe that license won't seem so expensive.

I will say those stocker trout out of Skate Creek are some of the best tasting trout around.

:P That was lame. I just got back from fishing and they were about 9 inches (Lake McMurray). Maybe i will use those for bait and go catch some big ocean fish

:yeah:  I scouted yesterday and all I saw was 8-9 inchers jumping also. Where's the 11-13 inchers? maybe only selected lakes :dunno:.. Either way gonna wait a couple weeks for the instant gratification crowds to diminish :chuckle:
