Watched Diners Drive ins and Dives...Place in Spokane made smoked onions for a sauce on a quesadilla. So as i was watching I was thinking, why not? He smoked them for 45 minutes with hickory. So if your gonna make some elk or deer steaks, why not start the smoker, slice up some onions, and then when your down to 15-20 minutes on the timer, throw your steaks on the grill. I bet some elk steaks with smoked onions and if you like em, some smoked fungus (mushrooms) would be mighty tasty! I bet you could even kick that up a notch and make onion rings...Slice the rings, smoke for 30 minutes, batter and fry. I am getting hungry thinking about it!!!
The more I think about this as I type, I bet some smoked zuccini (sp) or even corn on the cob would be good for a summer BBQ...Might take some playing with temp, but both are cheap...Soak corn, season, smoke, melt some butter over them, and enjoy. What do you think?

Jackelope smoked some tomatoes awhile back, said they were awsome as well. I gotta try some of both. I made smoked deviled eggs yesterday. They didn't last long.

Try Smoked Salad dressing. Smoke Onions and Tomatoes for about 45 min. 3 big tomatoes and like 2 avg. onions. When done put in a blender with olive oil, lemon juice and a little garlic, salt and pepper. Best Salad dressing ever!

That does sound good. Great idea.
But just think about all of the carcinogens you are ingesting

Do you think about that when you are eating ribs? Haha And its still better than all the crap they put in store bought dressings.

I always like to throw the little white pearl onions in the smoker for a half hour or so, great at the smoker snack.

Thank you for the recipe, I will try it this week. Do you smoke the onions sliced or whole? I assume they dry out too much if you slice them.

smoke some taters, makes a good tater salad

For the Salad Dressing. I just throw the onions in whole with the skins and everything on. then when they are cooked you just peel the outer layer off. i do the tomatoes in a little baking dish so you dont lose the juice cause they split and then when they are done just eliminate the hard part the stem sticks into.

There was supposed to be a big smiley after the carcinogen comment. LOL. I am not a cigarette smoker, but I definately eat my share of smoked products. It also makes great cologne.

Smoke some tomatoes then throw in a blender. Use this for making bloody Mary's and you won't be disappointed!

Quadrafire I was gonna say if you are worried about the carcinogens from that you alot less to worry about than me. :chuckle:

I have done this garlic recipe in the past.
Peel away the outer layers of the garlic bulb skin, leaving the skins of the individual cloves intact. Using a knife, cut off 1/4 to a 1/2 inch of the top of cloves, exposing the individual cloves of garlic drizzle with a little olive oil , salt and pepper. Smoked it at 325 with hickory wood for like 60 minutes. Once it is softened we spread it on toasted bread we did on the grill.
Basically took a roasting garlic recipe from the internet and modified it.
Awesome!
