Title: pipe jigs....
Post by: Black Plague on April 02, 2012, 04:42:20 PM: well we are planning another trip out to Neah Bay.... and I decided we should try making a few home made pipe jigs for lingcod and anything else that wants to bite it. ....so a friend of mine has been doing a lot of building in the house he bought a few years back...so I asked him if he Had any copper pipe laying around that he didn't really need/want (copper is spendy)...and he gave me about 6 feet of 1/2 inch pipe that was mostly greenish brown...well we got it cut and filled with lead with a hook on each end.... Do you think it will work?... How do you make yours? ...pictures are welcome...

Can't imagine to have ingots shipped because of the weight ,so where do you the rest of you guys buy it ?

Go to a scrap yard where they buy metals. They usually have lead there and can buy it from them. Or go to a tire shot and pick up some wheel weights.

any lead will work for these jigs. Soft lead is needed for small jig heads and split shot. I get wheel weights from a tire shop for free and cast tuns of weights.

Post by: huntergreg on April 02, 2012, 07:01:15 PM: Another thing that makes pouring easy is to drill your holes for the codder pins, then light a candle and hold the codder pin in the flame to get a black soot covering it. Then put in the hole. Makes the lead not stick when pouring into the pipe. :twocents:

WW in Washington are no longer lead. Legislature banned lead WW a few years back. :bash: :bash: :bash:

Post by: Rick on April 02, 2012, 07:53:34 PM: For anyone new to melting lead,you need to be super careful. If you get a single drop of liquid in a pot of molten lead,it will turn into a bomb. If you value your eyesight a pair of safety glasses in the absolute minimum. I wear heavy pants,a carhartt jacket,welding gloves and a full face shield. I don't like the idea of 600° molten lead anywhere on my skin.

Thats how I make mine. Just finished up a dozen for this years halibut/ling opener.

Maybe I am confused but I don't think trebles are legal any more, regs say 2 hooks which I interpret as 2 points or 2 single hooks, maybe I'm wrong ?? :dunno:

OK yep yer right, It reads that only two "Hooks" per line, then defines "Hooks" as single, double, or treble so I was wrong !!

My pipe jigs work just fine though and don't snag bottom !!! :IBCOOL:

Post by: sirmissalot on April 03, 2012, 10:56:39 AM: Thats an interesting setup you've made there, I like to use one big treble right in the middle of the jig where it doesn't reach the bottom to avoid being hung up, and can't reach the top to avoid fraying the line. Most of my pipe jigs are around 3lbs and I use 12/0 or 14/0 hooks, I overkill all the swivels and they will last you several seasons.

Post by: Black Plague on April 05, 2012, 05:53:32 PM: yeah this is the only one we have ever made with the swivel in the middle...and my gues is that is might wrap up on the line a bit....but it was kinda fun to try something new...I will have to try it out and if it doesnt work I will just switch the top hook out .... I wish I knew someone who had a bunch of aluminum arrow shafts that I could have... I like the baby pipe jigs for kelp greenling...they work really well...
