-Lightweight sleeping pad?
-Water filter/purifier?

Water filter/purifier. Can survive a lot longer and staying hydrated with clean water is a lot more important than the rest.
-
yeah water filter/ purifier. gotta have water to survive. thanks for the contest.
-
This is a tough choice. I could make do without all but the water filter. I guess you could boil all your water but that would be a hastle and takes a lot of time/fuel.
-
GPS here.
-
Elk call for sure.....
The sooner I locate and kill / harvest my elk, I could head for home. Boiled water for a day or running water out of a stream is good enough for me.
Johnny
-
Water for me.
-
Water purifier for sure.
-
I'm bringing my water purifier. I can live without the other things. Although I will probably be lost and won't sleep worth a darn.
-
Sleeping pad because if I don't get a good nights sleep I am toast. I can boil my water to purify it.
-
I'm going with gps I guess.
-
All would be nice and would come with me, but I'll bite since it's a contest. Elk call, no, I can use my voice in a pinch...Sleeping pad, no, can use extra set of clothes in a pinch....Bino's would be bummed if I didnt have, no, I have a spotting scope...GPS is nice also, but no, hunted for years without one. Water filter it is, much easier and more needed... just my $.02
-
Elk Call, get the elk to come to me and kill it and get out!
-
Sleeping pad need a good nights rest, boiling water or Iodine tablets is always an option for purification, Elk bugle on their own, GPS would be nice but pre season scouting should give you a good lay of the land and Bino's would be nice too save some leg work but not a necessity.
-
Elk call! Never have used a purifier/filter so it's not critical to me. Call em in kill it head home then drink all the water I need.
-
I guess I am different.
I can't live without my Bino's--I don't leave home without them!
-
GPS for me. I can't sleep without my CPAP anyway, so i don't need the sleeping pad. Elk call and binos, although great, aren't essential.
-
Water purifier hands down. You could be in a real fix without water, especially if you are bowhunting in Sept...
-
Gonna have to say the purifier, can live without all of the rest but need that clean water.
-
GPS, just in case.
I've been drinking from streams & springs all my life w/o any problems.
-
water purifier hands down.im getting older but still can do without the other stuff for now. :twocents:
-
sleeping pad.
-
Elk call for me.
-
GPS for me
-
water filter/ purifier
-
Elk Call
-
It would depend on the situation/ location, but in most cases I would have to say water filter...
-
It would be my jungle hammock. Can always boil water. Don't use my gps very much. Clothes could be used as a pad. U could get by with out calls. A close second would be my lightweight stove.
-
gps
-
Binos.
My reasoning for leaving the others at home...
Elk Call - I rarely use them for their intended purpose anyways. No big deal to leave them behind and just spot and stalk
Water Purifier - Most symptoms related to contaminated water don't appear until 10-14 days after infection. Giving me plenty of time to finish the hunt and seek medical treatment afterwords.
Sleeping Pad - I managed just fine without one in my early years, no reason I can't live without one now. Strictly a luxury item.
GPS - I don't own one now. Guess I won't be missing it much.
-
Elk call. Water is important but most elk don't live far from it. Pretty easy to find clean water in their woods (knock on wood). I haven't gotten beaver feaver yet and hope to never experience it. Can the season start already?
-
-Elk call? (This would be the most important thing for me, a call is invaluable during all elk seasons.)
-Lightweight sleeping pad? (I never used one till a few years ago, don't have to have it.)
-Water filter/purifier? (I have never carried one, I just get spring water where it comes out of the ground.)
-GPS? (I have never carried one till last year, don't need it)
-Binos? (I always have binoculars with me, but would forego them for the elk call since I pretty much know where my elk are gonna be anyway.)
-
Water purifier. I have two small kids at home that depend on me. I can not afford to be sick and miss a lot of work when I use most of my paid time off during hunting season! I would go nuts without my Binos, but I would make due!
-
Water filter. I bow hunt and it is usually warm in sept and I find I just hunt better drinking water thru out the day. I'm old and the Blues get steeper every year. Just taking the time to filter water gives me a chance to rest and maybe have a bite to eat. Time to think also.
-
I would have to have my binos...
Elk call- don't need it if they are talking and you are in the right area
water purifier- I could drink from a spring
Gps- Most likely I'd be hunting the same elk area I've always hunted and know it like the back of my hand
Sleeping pad- I could lay in some pine needles if I had too
-
Water purifier. I hate what those nasty unseen critters do to me.
-
water filter
-
GPS

Binos for me.

Water Purifier.
-
gps for sure u can always take a chance of drinking the water but if you get lost ur screwed
-
I guess I am different.
I can't live without my Bino's--I don't leave home without them!
:yeah:
I'd rather leave my gun at home than my bino's.
-
water filter
-
binos for me! i feel naked if i don't have my binos at my chest.
-
very very hard choice but i guess i would say water purifier.
-
elk call

Water filter for me.

water filter

GPS for sure! Gotta know where your goin and where youve been...ive drank plenty of water with out filtration before while hunting and was fine...I can already whistle like an elk :IBCOOL:
-
The question was
If you were on a backcountry bivy hunt for elk and could only bring ONE of the following items with you, which ONE would it be?
- When I hunt I always have a map on me or at least look it over if I have been there a few times to make sure I know what is up.
- I always bring a wrist compass so I know what direction to go in or out.
- I would bring the water purifier as I the West side water is not an issue but the desert areas have way more stagnant water then the West
- Sleeping bag is a luxury you can live without
-
I hunt with my 72 year old dad so if we were on a backcountry bivy hunt it would be because we were horribly lost!
What would we need?
Well Since we are now lost, we wouldn't have a GPS to help us get back...
We hunt in Western WA so Bino's would not do us any good, to heavy anyway...
Sleeping pad, no need we are both older so we have plenty of padding already...
Water Purifier, would be a good idea but of course we would not have that, plus if we drink enough water we can get rid of some of that extra padding I already talked about...
But we could "NEVER" get along without our elk calls so by reason of deduction I would have to say "ELK CALLS"
-
Elk call
Kill it and go home
-
Water filter!
-
I would boil the water......use leaves, ferns, pine needles for bedding,.......maps work if you know how to use them.......no need for binocs in westetn WA.......I would go with the elk call because there is nothing like a screa :tup:ming bull coming to check out the cow......kill it and head for the truck.
-
Gps.
-
Sleeping pad for me. Useless and or dead when frozen....
-
Water filter/purifier. Can survive a lot longer and staying hydrated with clean water is a lot more important than the rest.
[/q :yeah:uote]
-
Elk call for sure.....
The sooner I locate and kill / harvest my elk, I could head for home. Boiled water for a day or running water out of a stream is good enough for me.
Johnny
 Thats what i was thinking!
-
Binos. Hunt with your eyes, not with your legs. In a good area they can end a hunt in one day instead of five.
-
I would take a GPS. priceless to always know where you are and not be lost.
-
I'd bring a water purifier / filter to stay hydrated and keep charging after those bugling bulls!
-
Give me the water filter.
-
Elk call
-
bino's for me. have done without the others but i gotta see.
-
Elk calls. no contest. Creek water is fine. Binos would be my first choice if Mule Deer hunting but for elk I want my calls. The sleeping pad isn't even in the running.
-
Binos so I could count the nine points on his smaller left side :chuckle:
-
ELK CALL!! Its the only one on the list that i bring when im elk hunting.
-
Binos
-
Binos.
-
Binoculars. I hunt high enough that I don't need to treat water. I can sleep without a pad if I'm tired enough. Never owned a GPS - use paper maps instead. Have never used an elk call successfully, so that's off the table. But I am constantly looking through the binos.
-
water filter/purifier, gives you more time to be hunting and you can get by without the others.
-
Water filter purifier your not gonna get an elk if your dead or poopin your guts out
-
As has been said, water purifier.
All other items are "luxuries", lack of hydration can end your hunt.
-
Need the fine quality H 2 O! All others are important but not as much as water.
-
elk call-if you can't locate them in early archery, you can't hunt them.
I don't use binos very much. I can cut bows too sleep on and usually do, if you haven't tried it, do it under your pad. GPS is nice, but not necessary. It helps you plan and save time, but high up in the back country with a map you can't get lost. I have had a change of heart about water with my new hunting partner. I have always been a water nazi. Filtered everything. He eduacated me on the matter. We mostly drink out of seeps on the side of the mountain high up. With a few criteria satisfied, the water is always safe. Saves time.
-
-Elk call - no, shot elk without
-Lightweight sleeping pad - no, can sleep on rough ground, sorta
-Water filter/purifier - yes, know to a couple people who have been stuck in the high country needing help to get out thanks to beaver feaver.
-GPS - no, a good map and a couple compasses, a main with a backup
-Binos - no, shot elk without, tough to not have though
-
Does a bugle tube count as the elk call if you don't take a reed? I can mouth bugle in a pinch and get an answer.

Congrats to the winner !!!
I just have to say, those that think a call is most important must really have a tough time hunting, especially with all the complaining I hear about season, and how "the Elk just are not talking, etc... :dunno:
what about late season ? might as well stay home. :tung:please dont take this personnal, just was making an observation
-
thanks Corey, for the game. congrats to the winner.
have enjoyed the website-ELK101 & have passed it on to my pards. Here & other states.
-
Light weight sleeping pad. I can't perform well without a decent night's sleep.
-
Got to be binos for sure. They're like a second skin on me and I use them all the time. Other stuff I could live without; sleeping pad would be fir boughs, water would be everywhere on the westside, GPS is in my head, and compass is there also although I can get turned around in the city in a heartbeat!
-
Water Filter - Because you only need dysentery once. :chuckle:
-
Elk call will give you a second chance if you may miss,
the others are good but not necessary
plenty ways to get good water
Gps no you best know what your getting into without it, plus its been done with out as well
Binos would be nice but you could use you scope for short periods
-
So do we know who the winner is :dunno:
