Title: New pup for shed hunting
Post by: SWiley on April 14, 2012, 11:48:07 AM
Got a new puppy this past week and want to train him to find sheds. Anyone on here have any experience with traing dogs to find sheds? Any advise would be a big help. Thanks!

That is a good looking pup there.  Get a shed and start playing fetch with him....just don't let him keep it or he will think all sheds are his.  :chuckle:

 :yeah:
take that shed and start in the open letting him find it by sight then start throwing it at the edge of cover where its harder to see eventualy geting it into tall grass and cover where he has to find it with his nose. say the same command every time (keep it short 2 or three syllables) you throw the shed then take it away and reward him (for drug and bomb dogs they use a tennis ball a lot and is only allowed to play with it when successful) then do the same but don't throw it set it down while the dog is watching and say that same command so he knows he is supposed to go get the shed. after a few days or weeks depending on the dog and trainer (and time spent each day) you will be able to hide it when the dog is no where around say the command and the dog will know what he is looking for. take the ball or whatever your dog is dying to get his mouth on with you when you go for sheds as it is not just for training your pup may care less about sheds and is only in it for the reward. some people will take a chunk of shed with them so that they can keep the dog intrested and the scent fresh on his mind.

100% Correct. Only thing I can add is training in different areas is important. Labs especially are memory dogs and if you only train at the house and then take them into the woods expecting to get the same results you most likely won't. I would use at least 3 different areas so they don't think hunting is only for the back yard and play time is in the woods

Thanks for the help everyone! I'll have to get a hold of a shed and start introducing it to him.

it also helps to cut a piece of the end off to release more scent, if you soke it in water for awhile it should help as well

antlerdogs.com has some info and the people are pretty nice to talk to. I wouldn't recommend their video its really boring and hard to watch i never made it all the way through it. They actually sent me two of the DVDs. I could probably send you the other one if you want it.
