Does anyone have first hand knowledge/experience with these private ranch hunts for youth?

My son got drawn for a cow tag on the Black Rock Ranch last year. I searched last year for some information on these also and really could't find any. I would put in for it again, just beacause it's a youth hunt and it isn't really costing him anything points wise. The deal with these ranches, at least the Black Rock, is you kind of have to wait by the phone for them to call you. Which isn't to bad if you live in the Yakima area. But if you live on the west side it can be a challange. Especially if you have a busy life and need more than 12hrs notice. The hunts take place on the surrounding ag land and you kind of drive around and find the elk in fields and figure out a game plan. My point of contact for the ranch was Bob H. He is a great guy. He would be great to go to elk camp with. My son and myself really liked him. The day of our hunt there was a older, very senior type of hunter with us. Before we left the ranch we had a pre-hunt hunt talk. Bob must have said 10 times, "the kid shoots first, are we clear?". Evidently it was clear as mud. My son Jake had a good rest, he was laying the crosshairs down, I'm ranging the elk, tell him where to put the crosshairs and then BOOM!!!! Bob asked if we hit her. I said we never shot! Our hunting partner shot about 5ft over her back. Elk run, elk gone and season over. Never got called back and quit trying after a couple of months. Bob said they cut all the alfalfa fields and the elk moved on. I got no reason not to believe him. Like I said he seemed like a real stand up guy. Things just didn't work out. Hope this helps. If you got specific questions let me know and I will try and answer them.

:yeah:   My son drew a Blackrocks youth cow permit a couple of years ago.  Bob H. was very helpful but unfortunately we missed our one call in August and never got a chance to hunt.  We stayed in touch through March but the elk didn't show up.  It's a very hit or miss deal and you have to be ready to show up with very little notice.

Definitely a gamble. If I lived very local I would try for it but otherwise it may not pan out. Also, Bob is a very stand up guy and one of the best hunters I've ever met.

What's a good youth elk tag then? My little sis will be 11 this October and will have 3 points. I have been putting her in for the said units thinking they were high percentage. =(

i didnt check the regs yet to see what they are doing this year but the dungeness is a great chance for a great bull. its a hc hunt and the hc really tries to get the youth out there. the elk herd up and the hc and his crew will drive them sometimes. theres a lot of bulls and cows and they herd up tight. if a small bull steps out for a shot the hc will expect you to shoot it. even though there are bigger bulls in the herd.

The one they had on the OP outside of Forks was a good one. But that went bye bye when they started selling every tag as a special permit. I have to agree with previous posters, Bob H. is the cats meow. I really wish things would have worked out different. I truly believe that Bob wanted my boy to kill that cow as bad as I did. He is good people.

I had a girl in my class last year that drew one of the bull tags at either Silver Dollar or Black Rock back when she was 14 (couldn't remember which ranch it was).  She shot a decent 5 point raghorn.  Said it was a great hunt for her.  She's 19 now, so that was probably 5 years ago.

It's not an elk, but my little sis drew a late season Whitetail tag for Gardner last year and killed a dandy first buck. I was right over her shoulder as she shot the thing at 40 yards and it was easily the best moment of my hunting career. I hope she draws another tag over the next year or two so I can take her hunting again. There is nothing like taking a "little one" hunting. ;)

Nice job Slim.     You are right, nothing better in the world than putting your kids on game.  I'd MUCH rather see them fill a tag than me...
