Title: Ruger LCP defense round?
Post by: Quackin_Archer on April 18, 2012, 08:56:43 PM
So I got a box of federal hydro shock defense rounds for my LCP 380 and it was not cycling. I still havent shot it yet and am hoping its a break in type of thing, but I am wondering if anyone else has this issue and what defense rounds does this little snappy thing like?

I haven't tried the federals but my kel-tec (P3AT and very similar to an lcp) seems to have a preference for the UMC hollowpoints. I'm assuming your gun is clean and lubed, mine won't run more than a mag or two without failures if dry but it seems unstoppable if lubed.

Before I got rid of it, my little LCP ran Hornady TAP and Corbon just fine. I stopped using Hydra-shocks a long time ago when they got a little outdated. Corbon's, HST's, Ranger T's, Hornaday Critical Defense/Z-max all good stuff. I know the Critical defense was actually designed with the LCP in mind being its  barrel is so short it has a hard time achieving velocities to open hollow points properly.

I've used Hornady Critical Defense in my LCP.  It cycles just fine with that ammo.  The only trick is chambering the first round.  I usually need to pull back the slide all the way to the stop and then let it rip.  Rarely the cartridge gets stuck trying to slide up the barrel ramp and into the chamber on the initial round.  After that, subsequent rounds chamber just fine.  I haven't tried Golden Sabre yet.  Wondering if that will work as well.

critical defense and Pow'r Ball worked great in my diamondback, and they are notoriously finicky eaters.

Corbons work great in my little gem of a lcp.

If its a little pocket gun, I think you will find the manufacture standard is a round ball 95 grains and 1000 fps in that gun. I have a taurus PT 738 acp 380 and have run alittle more than a 1000 rounds thru it and never jamed or stovepiped.

I run ball in the LCP, as most .380 hp's are a bit lacking in the penetration category.. and penetration is pretty important.. and it cycles them good.
