Title: Shed hunters, their dogs & snakes?
Post by: Arteman on April 23, 2012, 11:15:02 AM: I'm a westside guy (yeah I know) so I don't have to worry about Rattle Snakes while out shed hunting here for me or my dog. Been going east a few times this year though, and worry more for my dog who seems to have more curiosity than brains most the time. I was wondering how you eastside guys prepare for such a thing with taking your dogs out combing the country for antlers. Now that its warming up a bit I plan on keeping her home tell I educate myself better on this, I'd hate to leave her home with her starting to do better with her training, however I'd hate more to set her up to get snake bit and be unprepared. Is there a shot for them, a buddy said something about it, not sure if its true though.

Post by: Skyvalhunter on April 23, 2012, 12:00:32 PM: I guess you need to ask yourself if snakes will be a common thing where sheds are. Most of the time they are night as the sheds are at a high enough elevation where rattlesnakes are not that big of an issue. That is unless you plan on shed hunting in the Desert unit or some place like that. But then who takes extra precautions when they are pheasant hunting, chuckar, quail where snakes might be. I have had my dog in snake country many takes with no issues.

Post by: Arteman on April 23, 2012, 12:38:16 PM: That was another thing, wasn't sure if it is a common thing to have a run in with one. I was curious so when I bs'd with a turkey hunter this last weekend I asked if snakes where around in the area, he said not many in the places I was shed hunting but there are some.

1) West side guys= easy pray, answer = stick with Black tails
2)West side dogs= easier pray, = dont let him out on the east side of the hills.
3)If you must tread over here in your Birkenstocks, bring a sturdy hiking stick and pound it when your hiking around, they will get out of your way....
4)As for the dog, find a bull snake and put the dog in a big pen with the snake, or a room and let him get bit a few times, you will notice him staying away after a few bites... then he will know what snakes are about and he will most likely keep his distance at least.....

Thanks, I was going to call the vet about it today, ill do that tomorrow. Wanted to know if it was necessary first.

lol birkenstocks? Did you make that up, seems I've heard that about 1000 times. :chuckle:
Eastside= easy shed hunting= can't get enough of it.
The snake idea I do like however, now that is original.

Post by: ghosthunter on May 02, 2012, 12:30:48 PM: Get a garder snake put it on the lawn when the dog try to smell it hit him with a shock collar. Will only take once or twice for life. barrow a collar if you dont have one. Get the shot.

the shot is worth the money. I have had two dogs bit and one was treated one wasn't. The untreated dog was way worse- they both lived.
