Title: Lightning
Post by: david0 on May 01, 2012, 08:21:07 PM
Does anybody else have any lightning pictures? I drove a truck through Texas over the weekend and ran into two lightning storms, it was pretty fun. I got some video too that I still need to edit.

Wow those look way better than mine. Do you remember what kind of settings you were using? This was my first attempt.

Wow those look way better than mine. Do you remember what kind of settings you were using? This was my first attempt.

I had my camera on a tripod with a remote shutter button and on "Bulb" setting so I could set the exposure time as long as I wanted just by pushing the button, these shots were like 30 second exposures with 100 iso, Here is the metadata that will help you set up nicely !!

Quote
Exposure time: 30 sec
Focal length: 44 mm
X-Resolution: 240 dpi
Y-Resolution: 240 dpi
Resolution unit: Inch
FNumber: f/8
ISO Value: 100
Metering Mode: Spot

You can get a similar effect with fireworks but the shutter speed is shorter like 3-8 seconds !!

Exposure time: 5 sec
Focal length: 18 mm
FNumber: f/16
ISO Value: 100
Metering Mode: Multi-Segment

I tried doing long exposures but the all came out blown out. I was just doing a high iso and short exposure and it was working a little better. Ill have to try the long exposure again next time.

Pretty cool.  We had a descent storm out in my neck of the woods (OK Plains) yesterday and it sure feels like more tonight.  If it starts to spark I will try to get some pics for you guys.

I'd love to find out the right or best way to photo them.  I've had poor success.

Cool video !! When I lived in Wisconsin I'd grab a big glass of iced tea and a lawn chair and sit on the porch and just watch the show. The smell of a storm was like nothing else !!

Us too, we would drive out to one of my grandfather's alfalfa fields and watch the storms roll in.

cool thread.

what you want to do is get up in very tall tree or on a pole of somekind and wait to get a close-up lightning shot   :chuckle:
