I am looking to get a kid his first deer and thought it would be a good opportunity to bring him to the northeast corner. He is not picky weather it is a buck or doe he just wants to experience a good hunt. We would go for modern deer season. This would be my first time to the northeast as well, so was looking for some advice or any knowledge to help a new young hunter have an opportunity in having a great experience. I am not set on any one unit so open for suggestions. The hunt would primarily be for whitetail. you could PM me if you'd like.

personally, i'd try the palouse. open terrain, good deer numbers, might see more deer a day there. NE is by-and-large brushy. yes, there are deer there, but visibility can be a factor.

Lots of good fairly open land public land up here. Tons of whitetail does. Some areas are very brushy depending on what you consider the NE corner.
I've been seeing alot of does so far.

There is over 100,000 acres of private timber company land here in Ferry County that is very huntable, plus all the state land, DNR etc. But, this is what I call the northeast/central part of the state. :tup:

definately take advantage of having your kids hunting with you ... People in the N.E corner are pretty friendly and most landowners will not tell a kid no ... over the years I have made alot of friends over there and it mainly from when my boys were little dudes ...they all welcome us with open arms and I appreciate these people alot ... :tup:

All the big landowners I know, hate deer, period. But, they won't let you hunt it. Some charge a fee upto $200 per person if the do.

I was there last year and saw lots of white tail and Mule deer. To bad I missed my shot. Best time to go is late season.

So far in the past week, I bet I've seen 60 does, both whitetails and muleys.

I got my first buck up there in 2009 while hunting on someones land I got permission for on that day. Several land owners will want does off of there property and will let you hunt it. Best advice is to try to find some public or private land to go on. Now is the time to lock up permission for land.

Every unit has good hunting and you should be able to easily find a doe or buck on some of the large tracts of public access. There is Colville National Forest, State Lands, and Timber Company lands and most are wide open to hunting.
If you want to get into higher concentrations of deer I would recommend private land near Mt Spokane in the Mt Spokane unit. That unit had less winter kill in previous years, I would make a trip over in late summer and knock on a few doors and explain you want to get your son his first deer, I bet you don't get far before you have a place to hunt. That scenario would work good in any unit in the NE.

I talked to a landowner today and I asked him about access for a youth. He charges $50 for a youth. He told me he had about 120 deer in his field
last night. I saw about 60 at 9:30 this morning.

there's a farmer on Mt. Spokane that loves to have kids kill the deer eating his alfalfa! i hear he's got lots of acres, so it shouldn't be too hard to track him down! :tup:

NE WA is a great place to get a kid started deer hunting. You will see alot of deer and thats what you need to keep a kid's attention. As far as finding private land to hunt, ask around at the sporting goods departments of the stores in Colville because there tends to be alot of BS going on about hunting in those places. I'm sure you will come up with something.

i don't see any way of getting over prior to season so probably will be on public land to hunt. thanks for all info so far

If you call fish and game over there, they have a list of farmers that allow you to hunt on their land for does only, I called three of the people on the list a couple of years ago all were super friendly

Sounds like Joe has a good idea about calling the Region 1 headquarters. If you get set up with a landowner, it will be easier hunting so if the WDFW can't give you specific landowners you might try knocking on doors with your son when you get here. If you don't find private access, there is still a ton of public land access in every unit. I would check around the Mt Spokane foothills north of Spokane, the Le Clerc Creek area north of Newport, the Hunters and Springdale area, Chewelah Creek near Chewelah, the LPO Wildlife Area just east of Colville, the National forest between Colville and Ione, or Sherman Creek area west of Kettle Falls, or near Northport, Orient, or Curlew, there's lots of public land around any of those areas that offer easy public access. :tup:
If you get a Colville Forest Map or DNR map of the area you will be able to identify public land and there is not a mountain or drainage that does not have deer. :twocents:

i like the looks of the mt. spokane unit for the whitetails with harvest rates and longer youth hunt being open to any whitetail for the boy to go after. Now its time to find some public land in the area to focus efforts on if the private land does not come up. I will be trying to locate some private land for the hunt though, for it will just take some time. I am getting more excited for him to harvest a deer than for me. :)
