Title: Cabelas Hawkins .54
Post by: GEARHEAD on May 09, 2012, 07:21:19 PM
well, was thinking hard and still am on getting a knight, however, i keep looking at this cabelas kit gun that i put together many years ago, blued it, polished and stained it, the works...i'm wondering what its capable of, i have shot it with 80 grains of true gun powder and it seems to shoot well, with heavy conicles, i dont think i want to shoot with this current load past 60 yards, based on group size. did blast a coyote i called in with it,at 50 yards last year, thinking it would be nice to take a deer with it, old school. Its a multi season thing.

so long question short, does anybody have this gun, and have ya been able to come up with a load to shoot it accurate to 80 or a 100 yards,

Check out the longhunter society record book some time. There are a lot of big animals taken with Cabelas Hawkens. Don't think because they are traditoinal they don't work.

FFG, I went with the 348 to use for both deer and elk didn't want to be changing loads all the time. Lot of guys use the 290 gr. power belt guess its up to the person
I just wanted more punch.
