I have a lab, just over 1yr now. i would really like to take him out to do some duck this coming year. i've got basic's down with him but i wan to get him all up to speed. any suggestions? should i be looking for a trainer to take him to? are there some good DVD's? best practices??

There is a ton of videos out there and allot on YouTube. I would suggest that the first time you take the dog hunting to not drop multiple birds at one time or it might be an overload on the dog as in it's out retrieving a bird and you drop a second bird and your dog might drop the first bird to go after the second.
The biggest thing that will help you is having a dog that follows basic commands as in here, sit and stay.

Good luck and don't get too frustrated

Depending where you are living... http://www.rainierhrc.com/
I know Happy Gilmore is part of their group... Good way to train together with some folks... Its important for YOU to know what you are doing while training your dog.  :twocents:

my brother worked his dog with another trained dog and it worked very well.  he just had to teach him basic commands and patience to hold.
