I need to get a outdoor open carry pistol for out picking huckle berries, fishing or just walking the dog.
Leaning towards a stainless revolver, hogue rubberized grips so it won't slip even when wet, and fairly powerful.
What you all pack? And what do you regret about it? too big, not big enough?? etc etc
-
rossi 4" .357. i don't feel undergunned in my neck of the world.
-
Browning Hi-Power 9mm. If I can't kill it with two 15 round mags, it won't die. It points well and everyone that's ever shot it said they liked it better than their _____ (fill in the blank)
-
my concealed carry is a glock 26 and hunting i carry my ruger black hawk .44 .the 44 is a little big but im most accurate with it so im more comfortable having it with me
-
686
-
that would be a good one, I want to get a 686 anyways but for a different reason.
I was thinking pre lock 629 classic
-
629 smith 44mag
-
Taurus model 616 357
-
629 smith 44mag
tell me more about it, pro's cons?
-
I carry a Glock 35, ported barrel. Its a little big but I shoot really well with it.

Ruger Redhawk SS .44 mag with Pachmayr grips I carry it in a nylon Uncle Mikes holster in a cross draw type set up. That way it is out of my way berry picking, or carrying a .22 rifle or shotgun if it is grouse season...
Have never regretted carrying it.
-
I pack my Taurus ultra-light 44mag.
-
2 for me. Judge 3 inch mag 410. 45 LC or my Glock 29sf 10mm. Both small enough and won't be too friggin' big and will get the job done. Ya don't need those magnums. :twocents:
-
Depends how thick it is...629 classic 8 3/8" .44 is great, 586 6" easier to carry, 66 2 1/2" or 60 2" .357 really comfortable, .460 8 3/8 if expecting something out of the ordinary. .45acp commander is handy, some days it's one of the .22 airlites, other days, some combination. All a trade off with pros and cons to all. XVR in a chest holster not really neccesary for short hikes, but the .22's might not be enough far from pavement. Used to carry a G 29 10mm or SS Bisely Vaquero .44 mag. Choose what you hit best with and can lug up a long hot hike. Or pack something heavy and consider it a pre season workout. I learned strong side carry is better than anything, changing clothes is a pain with shoulder and chest rigs.
-
686
4" stainless with a Hogue grip. The holster that I am using for it isn't the best but it carries well (not too big or heavy) and should be more than adequate for any black bear or meth-head!
-
Kimber covert II crimson trace grip laser in .45 or a Glock 22 in .40 w- crimson trace grip laser and crimson trace light
-
Judge loaded with PDX 1 and 45 LC?
-
Depends on my mood, I keep enough around to fit the bill.
-
g20sf 10mm. 16 rounds of hate.
-
I mostly carry a 686 Powerport (6") or a 629-1 8 3/8" either or in Bianchi leather holsters. For as infrequently as they get drawn I would like to get a 4" 686 or 629 Mountain. I am looking for a Browning Buckmark .22 to carry during grouse season as the others don't leave anything but a feather pile.
-
I'm a Ruger Super Black Hawk kind of guy. 44 mag
-
1911 or 44 Special.

Yeah, I have two holsters I like. MY fav is leather on a full ammo belt, with suspenders :chuckle: gets pretty heavy with ammo, gutting knife, etc... The other is an elcheapo nylon
-
I like the glock 19 or my XD -45 if I want to carry an auto.
My usual woods sidearm of choice is a ruger Blackhawk 4 " barrel in .41 mag.
It will stop most anything and I carry crossdraw and hardly know I have it on.
-
629 smith 44mag
tell me more about it, pro's cons?
zero cons,I have small hands the gun fits well with the grips on it,it is also ported. They are spendy, think I paid 6 something,I should remember I bought it on my wife's birthday :chuckle: its a 6inch barrel..weight wise its heavy but well worth it.If your in the graham area you can shoot it if ya like..simply rugged sourdough holster I love.
-
Judge loaded with PDX 1 and 45 LC?
That's right, perfect !!!
-
Chris,
I'll sell you my XD 45 13 rnd with Pearce extension. 14+1 in the pipe. Blackhawk Holster and all the accessories and ammo. $550 firm.

I sometimes a carry a S&W 629 but its heavy so mostly it stays home.
I mostly carry a Glock 26 – very light and packs a lot of firepower I have 10 round and 15 round mags for it
My newest is a Ruger LCR .357 mag – even lighter and more punch but only 5 rounds.
-
Taurus Tracker 4" .357 loaded with 180 grn swc, never leave home without it.
-
During hunting season I like the 629 in a shoulder rig, stays out of the way but it can still get heavy. I'm thinking about switching to the HK USP .45 in a drop leg, may be better.
P.S. I hate picking huckle berry's but oh they are so good!
-
S&W 629 44mag. I bought a really nice Galco Phoenix holster and gun belt to carry it. A good belt really makes a difference in carrying the large frame guns. It's not completely weightless, but it's not painful humping around all day.
-
a ruger markIII hunter it fits in my pocket of my shorts I hike in, or goes in a concealed carry bag if I feel like hauling a day bag around. working on getting used to wearing a shoulder harness and carrying a sig 226 but again it a bit of a hassle and for quick hikes which always turn out way longer than planned its usually my 22....
-
For the woods i carry a taurus tracker model 415 in 41 rem mag. It has a 2.5" ported barrel and best of all its a compact frame made of SS. Bigpower in a small fast handling package. Picked it up at my gun dealer in like new condition for $258. A bargain. Another nice hiking hunting rig that is easy to pack is the new ruger LCR in 357. Weighs 18 oz. Spring for the crimson trace grips, sweet.
-
Taurus titanium 44mag, 4in barrel.....28 oz. Full size grip, Tracker model grips are too small for my hands.
-
either 45 colt 7 1/2" bicentennial blackhawk with my own load, or Taurus pt 1911. just depends on the season.
-
Like to carry my Kimber Ultra Raptor but my Fobus holster interferes with my pack waist strap. Recently started carrying this stainless GP100 4"bbl in a Hunter holster and belt that clears the waistband and feels comfortable.

-
Taurus Titanium 45acp revolver.
4inch barrel, Hogue combat grip.
Think midsize revolver that weighs 23 oz.
I used to carry a 686 but it weighs twice as much.
-
10mm g20
-
When hiking.
Squirt gun full of whiskey for me.
Ruger security six for them.
-
I was thinkin I could double it as a hunting pistol, so leaning towards something that'll reach out a ways.
I like the 44mag mostly because I have a ruger 44 carbine semi-auto, I like to consolidate ammunition :chuckle:
-
Glock20 10mm ....it's a lot of firepower but I'd probably only ever have the chance to use one of them.
-
629 smith 44mag
:yeah: Awesome pistol!!! Just bought mine a few months back and love it. Small minor problem with the firing pin but a few days at Discount gun their gun smith fixed it and now its back to awesome.
-
G29. Takes the same mags as the 20 and is lighter, plus I can carry 10 rounders as well to save even more weight.

If you are looking for a hunting revolver then go big and long. But even so you may still want to be carrying a
more compact fast acquisition rig to account for the wolves, cougars, bears and 2 legged vermin which can be found in our woods and may popup at the most unexpected moment.

Had both.. Kept the 20
-
I carry a Springfield XDM 45acp. loaded with Winchester PDX 1 230gr. hp. 14rds. in gun and two spare magazines with a total of 40rds. with me. With todays economy worried about 2 legged predators more then 4 legged ones.
-
S&W M&P 40
-
G20 10mm w/ 6" stainless barrel. Good for longer range.
-
Smith & Wesson M&P 40

Fester,
What barrel do you have for it?

Fester,

KKM

Shot any hardcast thru it? How's it do?
-
Shot any hardcast thru it? How's it do?
Yes. In fact that's why I got it, since you can't use it in Glock OME barrel's. Cycle's fine so far haven't had any hang ups. Accuracy is much better with the heavier bullet also.
-
Sweet, my g20 is sickly accurate already. May just have to pick one up
-
tweekers are normaly pretty thin, absent accuracy, fire power is a must. for me, G19 with spare 32 round clip in the backpack. :chuckle:
-
Like a lot of others, 40cal S&W
-
gloc 40. cal. drop even the bravest ( or dumbest ) SOB in the woods
-
40 Cal.

Not interested in a polymer auto for an outdoors woods gun. They'll all come up short on anything 300 lbs or bigger with a thick coat of fur and fat.
Auctually considering a S&W 460

Ultimately all handguns will come up short. When it comes down to it your counting on a head shot in the first place. The 10mm is plenty of medicine for country where you don't expect to consistently run into grizzly and will certainly handle a 500lbs black bear if necessary.
Your looking at 20 - 30 lbs of recoil in a 460 (a lot for a handgun.) That's approaching magnum rifle recoil. It will certainly do the job but your soaking up a lot of extra recoil for very little gain. In reality if I was ever able to get off quick follow up shots. I would much rather have my 10mm autoloader.
If your regularly going into grizzly country the 460 will be great. But I doubt you will be practicing much with it. For this reason I am quite certain I can unholster and accurately point shoot my 10mm at danger close distances faster than I would ever be able to with a 460. Just my :twocents:. Obviously every situation is different and there are certainly areas where the .460 is going to outshine a 10mm... for a balance of power and practicality I find the 10mm hard to beat. I researched it for a while, that's what I ended up with and I am very happy with the purchase.
-
It's moot
They discontinued the S&W 460V with a 5" barrel - now they make the "XVR" and those start at 8-3/8 inch barrel
also too expensive time I get the holster I'm into it 1500 bucks - I could get a damm nice rifle for that with optics.
way over priced imo
-
I wasn't going to get into the 10mm thing, but I think I may have found the answer
both
I'm in the middle of researching and it looks as if I can go the G20 route with 10mm for when in the woods - and switch to 40 S&W when not with a barrel/spring swap
-
that idea kind of excites me - wonder how much the conversion is
anyone done this?
-
Less than $200 between barrel and a magazine.

I'm telling you man. I really do love my G20. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing it and I am very satisfied with the purchase.
FYI on the 10mm..most standard production rounds are watered down to .40 S&W performance because the FBI couldn't handle the full power loads (enter the development of the .40) This being the case the gun is setup for these rounds from the factory. When you switch to your full power/heavy field carry rounds I recommend going with an aftermarket barrel and spring swap.
Here is hickok45 shooting the hardcast bullets
You won't need to switch to the .40 barrel unless you are wanting to save a little on ammo (which can be a substantial savings).

:yeah:
Here is the barrel

Don't quote me on it but I doubt you will need a new spring since like I mentioned most of the standard 10mm production rounds are watered down to .40 performance.
-
awesome!
this will be the route I'm going then - thanks for the help!
I'll aks a few more Q's when I auctually got the G20 in hand, never had a mod pistol before and I'm stoked to get into it.
I've got a lot of trigger time on a G17 - be nice to have another glock in my hand ;)
-
any stock G20 right? or is there some better earlier versions I should look for?
-
Why don't you get the best of both worlds and get a S&W 610. :chuckle: I have a 6.5" model 610 and it is my absolute favorite walk about handgun. It's not as potent as the 4" 45 Colt Redhawk (which is another awesome option ) but it's not as heavy either. Those Rugers are so over built that the 4" Redhawk actually weighs more than the 6.5" 610! If you look really hard, you may be able to track down a used 4" 610 revolver. They don't make this model any more, but they are worth looking for.

Just looked into it and you should only need that barrel to complete you conversion to the .40 ...which will take less than 30 seconds.
I use the Serpa holster when I am in the field. It's the holster I have trained the most with so I am faster with it than I am with other retention style holsters. That being said the Serpa holster may not fit your needs and some people somehow manage to have accidental discharges with this holster....however, the problem isn't with the holster its really a result of user error and poor training. I have unholstered and reholstered with a serpa literally tens of thousands of times and not once had a accidental discharge.
-
any stock G20 right? or is there some better earlier versions I should look for?
They don't have any GEN4's G20's right now (I don't believe). Mine is a GEN3 and no issues. If the full size grip is too large you may need to go with the G20SF or have the grip reduced (either way it can be customized to fit your hand).

Talk to your brother he can probably get you one on base for no tax or he can get you one from gunarama with a military discount.

Just for the sake of something new.....................I'll pack a hand gun when my hands will be busy with berries but all other times I pack my Win. 94 30-30. I just love the feel of carrying it and I feel safest with it. :twocents:

don't think you will need new magazines for the .40 conversion either

Ahhh, yes. There really isn't anything better than a lever action in the woods, is there?

You can't go wrong packing a couple of these and several spare mags:
-
The other day I shot a 9mm AR with slide fire. I was amazed how well you can keep it on target. Nothing wrong with that either.
-
I got one of these if I want something a little more than a sidearm
