I have not been coyote hunting long, and have not gotten any good shots off (but I have called one in before). I am getting a friend into hunting, and I started him out duck hunting. Now he is eager to come yote hunting this Saturday with me. We are both excited, but we both don't know a whole lot (he is clueless). I am going to take him to some clear cuts in Snohomish county, but there is a problem. There are tons of bears in that area. What happens if a bear is on a rampage for us, and it is not stopping when we stand up and start shouting? It is likely that we will see one. I do not feel like shooting a bear out of season. I would go somwhere else, but I don't want to travel to the east side just to shoot dogs. Maybe there is a way to just attract Wiley and not Yogi. Any experiences or thoughts on this?

I wouldnt worry about it. If you do stand up and make your self known I dont think you will have problems with bears. Ive called to bears with them a couple 100 yards away and have had them not even care. Not saying they wont come to the call. Just saying the coyote will probably beat them there anyway.

That is what I would think, but I have heard that when someone whales on a distress call bears can get in this trance type of thing and cannot get out of it :dunno:

Kola16, I really would not worry too much about that. Most times bears do anything they can to stay away from you. There are exceptions though, a few years ago while photographing a bear, it decided to come right towards me and check me out. I took a couple of pictures while it stopped and looked at me then it continued coming towards me. When it got pretty close to me I figured that I would do the old wave my arms and holler at it. When I did that it stopped for a moment and then kept on coming to me. I had a 357 magnum with me with 6 shots in it. I figured that I would give it one warning shot and save the other 5 for self defense. As soon as I fired the warning shot into the ground, the bear turned away and took off like a race horse. I guess what my advise to you on this is to not be to worried about it but be prepared to do what you have to do be it season or not,

99.999999% chance no bear attack... They should be easy enough to let know that you aren't looking for them by just standing up and moving around, if they even get close enough that you feel you need to even woryy about it :twocents:

Thanks guys, I guess I am not gonna worry about a bear getting ravenous, and focus more on yotes. So are clear cuts good places to go for coyotes on the west side?

:) Yer dead meat in that case, so take a note with you saying I get yer rifle. It'll be fine I'll use it well: pawn it and go to the casino. :chuckle: Many coyote callers are killed and eaten every year I have proof, You aint never heard of it so it must be true, the bears ate em!! prove me wrong, I dare ya. or ya could call in a coyote caller :dunno: I strongly recommend calling where you know coyotes are. remember they are small and can hide in 6 inch tall brush. Ya'll might want to avoid mating calls :chuckle:

Howls and pup distress are your best bets for calling up only yotes. Every time I've seen a bear about .5 seconds later it was hauling the mail outta the area.

I have never heard the trance thing before. From every thing I have read and had experience with its the opposite. The bears get side tracked if you stop calling.
as for the coyotes I would get up real early before light. drive around and do some locating howls. keep track if you get any answers and come back and hunt those areas. The pups probably are not traveling to far from there dens yet. So the parents will be more apt to respond in a defensive manner. I hope some of that helped

Well no bears came running ay me  Un fortunately no coyotes did either :P Just one very stupid deer :dunno:

Do your fair share of research. Most people think that calling in coyotes on a regular basis is as easy as blowing into a call (or turning on your foxpro ), NOT the case. There are so many variables involved with what they will come running in to. You can be in great coyote country and hear coyotes but not be able to call them in, unless you know the right sequence of calls. Ive been coyote hunting for years and still learn something every time im out, just like most other hunting. Good luck and take a shotgun if youre hunting the westside!
