any body shoot a rock island 1911? ive heard good things about them, and they seem like a no frills no bs entry level 1911. i think rock island made the bulk of the 1911s durring ww2? i may be wrong on that, and i havent gotten to shoot one, but they seem like a good deal..... anybody have any experiance with them?

These RIA's your talking about are made in the Philippines and for about $450 it's a great deal.
I bought one a few years back and I used it for my conceal carry for a while. So if I dropped it, no big deal. It functions very well, it's accurate and it is probably the cheapest in the market.
The magazine on then though are not very good.
Check Sarco Inc. the last time I checked there they were $360
The 1911's that you mentioned that were the bulk of WWII are not made by the same manufacturer and I have NO clue if they were the bulk of 1911's during that era.

This is what I found as well.
They take standard 1911 magazines don't they?

there are three brands of 1911 coming out of the phillipines that i know of, rock island, armscor, and ATI.. I bought an ATI not long ago. Less than 500$, plain GI looking all steel 1911. shot 4" groups at 25yds out of the box. just changing a barrel bushing has it grouping about 2" at 25yds.. works pretty good. I am debating taking it to Ft Benning for interservice competition and Camp Perry for nationals, even if it is a plain fixed sight gun.

Went through this a couple months ago when buying a 1911. RI is pretty good gun, but after some hunting I was able to pick up an American made SA mil-spec for $500 (used). A new one cost a little bit more, but to me it seemed worth it. Normally I don't mind where stuff is made, but it is a 1911 and getting the RI seemed wrong.
If you can't find the used SA at that price or just rather have the new gun, get the RI. From want I have experienced shooting one and what others have told me, you'll probably never regret it.

To bad the Para Ordnace 1911 GI Experts aren't $399.00 bucks anymore, they were a great entry level 1911. Glad I got mine when I did.

I've got a Rock Island 1911 that they call their Tactical model, all that means is that it has a little bit better sights, bravertail grip safety, different hammer and an ambi safety. I've also got Dan Wesson and Fusion 1911s. The Rock Island is almost as accurate as either of the more expensive pistols and locks up really well. You won't be disappointed with one, for the price they are great guns. 8)

I have not heard of ATI. I do know that Metro Arms 1911's are also made in the PI. they are as good as RIA's.
Interservice comp should be fun, heck why not take it.
