Title: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: JPhelps on June 03, 2012, 08:38:58 AM
After talking with Dale and getting the O.K. here goes

Hunting-Washington Elk Calling Contest
I will be sponsoring/hosting an elk calling contest here on Hunting-Washington.com.  I figured this will be a fun way to get ready for the up and coming elk season.

Some simple Rules to make sure everyone has a fair shot:
~1 minute ± 5 seconds total sound clip
~File needs to be emailed to me at phelpsgamecalls@yahoo.com as a .mp3 or .wav file
~Only one caller allowed per sound clip/sound clip must be continuous from start to finish
~Only Air operated calls may be used
~All Callers will remain anonymous until after the winners are chosen (can elect to stay anonymous after that as well).
~Caller submissions will be posted under the contest for others on the forum to listen.
~There will be at least three judges who base your score out of 30.  (10 for herd talk, 10 for bull sounds and 10 for freestyle).

Required Sounds:
20 Seconds of Herd Talk (Cow/calf vocals, pleading, estrus, alarm, etc...)
20 Seconds of Bull Sounds (Locator, Challenge, Scream, Grunt, Chuckle, etc...)
20 Seconds of Freestyle (Any elk vocalizations you would like to use)

DISCLAIMER:  The judges will score the audio clip according to their own criteria.  Their decision is final.  Do not get offended by the results.  This is for FUN and lets keep it that way.

Prizes, so far:
1st Place - $100 worth of product from Phelps Game Calls
2nd Place - $50 worth of product from Phelps Game Calls
3rd Place - $25 worth of product from Phelps Game Calls

The contest will not go live until June 18th and final submissions will end sometime in the middle of July.  DO NOT SEND ME SUBMISSIONS UNTIL THE CONTEST HAS STARTED.

I am posting this to see if we want to change any of the rules around or if any other changes may be recommended by the forum.  I am also looking for Co-Sponsors to beef up the Prize packages.  I am hoping this goes well and can be an annual event here on Hunting-Washington.

Cap. Silver - enter anyways.  I will make sure that me and the judges make comments during our scoring.  If nothing else you may become a better caller.
Austrian Hunter - I'm thinking somewhere in the middle of July.  When the contest starts, I will have a definite date.

instead of just a sound clip i think it might be cool to do a video and upload it to youtube. you could add a judging category for creativeness of the calling video. just a thought that could make it even more fun! either way i like it!
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest

I thought about that but wanted it to be about the best caller and the video could distract from the caller.  I also wanted the callers to remain anonymous throughout.

Just curious how the voting will work?? Will there be an initial vote by forum members, Then top 10 or 15 judged by your panel... Or all judging done by said panel?

Sounds fun either way!!

Bonkellekter,

I have been debating on that one.  Let everyone have a chance or let the forum narrow it down then just judge the final ten.

My only concern that way would be if people pushed their own or buddys through (everyone here is pretty good and I wouldn't expect that).  I'm open to suggestions on this.  I don't mind going through and scoring each one.

So for clarification, you have to give examples of all three types of elk noises????

Sucks for me.. I do awesome calf/cow calls... can not bugle/chuckle/grunt for *censored*...   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: JPhelps on June 03, 2012, 05:17:09 PM
You could still do well.  You could use cow/calf sounds for 40 seconds and only bull sounds for 20.  Who knows through practice you might be an awesome bugleler by time its over.

Either way the voting goes shouldn't matter too much... I just like the idea of going thru all of the different entries, like you mentioned to help prepare and learn new sounds for the upcoming season

So are you asking for calls that actually turn on elk or the usual stuff that everyone blows that turns on hunters and not elk? There is a big difference.
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: JPhelps on June 03, 2012, 05:43:28 PM
I've spent 15 years studying/learning about local elk and their vocals. I will judge based on what I think REAL elk sound like (sounds and noises I have heard).  The other panel members may have different criteria.

Jason,
Thanks.  I won't participate as I am too junior of a caller and frankly, I'm afraid I'd make myself look really bad.  If it works, I'd like to hear the top ten too.  Thanks

You would never make yourself look bad bud. No one should look at it like that.

Great idea Jason! Love it.

One idea for people like sniperdan is maybe set up 3 classes. beginner/intermediate/pro etc.

If we can get enough sponsors into it maybe we can have a 1-3 in all 3 areas. Just good for thought. Like me I can blow a great cow call and bugle just fine. I would call myself intermediate because I don't have that many years elk hunting under my belt. People like you and elknut and a few of these other guys are for sure pro's and know the sounds much better then some of us.

I am all for different classifications, as long as everyone is honest, like you said my biggest problem I would have is funding prizes for all three levels.  I will see how this plays out and see if I can make it happen.
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: wrongway on June 03, 2012, 10:18:57 PM
I would love to do this, but my thoughts would be just a judging on sound not a video.
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: JPhelps on June 03, 2012, 10:22:51 PM
wrongway, that's most likely how it will go.

I am working on a workflow that will be easy from video camera or recording device, to the computer, to me all using free software, or you will be welcome to use your own as long as I get the .mp3 or .wav file.
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: wrongway on June 03, 2012, 10:35:07 PM
sounds good, someone brought up the different classed and yes I would be interested in this, I have never entered an elk calling contest, but would consider myself better than a armature but not a pro. what are your thoughts

I think it would be  ! ...
Im in.
My only problem would be, in order to sound like real Elk, I rarely call that much in a minute, let alone 20 seconds.
A minute for each is standard..
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: JPhelps on June 04, 2012, 04:59:14 AM
I think in all calling contests the call sequence gets condensed to somewhere around the 10x to 20x the amount of calls you would hear in the real world for that time frame.  The panel is looking for accuracy in the elk calls as well as the callers range.

I agree that calling in a contest and calling to kill an elk are most of the time very different.  The shortened time frames are just to make sure that the panel and I can judge all the entries.

Will the majority be sending audio files or video files?

I'm wanting a workflow where no sound quality is lost.  I will be using soundcloud to host the audio files under my account.

Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest

You can use any audio recording device that works.  I figured most people would video it and then extract the audio.  Some people may not know how to do that , so I was going to write a short technical document explaining the workflow for both.

After talking with Corey and Paul, we will just run an open class.  However don't be discouraged as there will be door prizes just for entering.  This is for fun and I would like as many callers to participate as possible.

I have called in my share of bulls for being only 22 and im not scared to call for people i dont know and i think im pretty decent, but man the thought of being judged on my calls scares me! expecially since you guys are pros!
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest
Post by: JPhelps on June 07, 2012, 08:57:07 PM
Should be fun!

Don't worry about being judged, you guys will all do fine and if nothing else every one will come out of this a better caller.  I like listening to everyone's calling strategy and what they think elk sound like.

Talking with Paul one thing he really looks for in contest judging is accurate length calls.  In contests a lot of time callers will let out a 6 to 8 second bugle which isn't very natural.  As far as what Corey looks for - Perfection :chuckle:

This WILL be fun!
Title: Re: Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest

I won't be looking for the perfect sound or perfect call, but I'll be looking for believable sounds. Yes as Jason points out sound management is as important as ones sound quality. Either can be over done! Pure notes with a nice transition from one sound to another shows confidence & control, this only comes from lots of practicing. Some will put out that type of effort & some will not, judges generally can hear those that really put time into their practice & these hunters separate themselves from the others! It's all about having fun so get out there & polish up & fine tune your strengths! If you are not good at certain sounds don't use them, stay with what you do best & still have a variety! Good cows sounds are as necessary as good bull sounds!

I really look forward to hearing you all!! Good Luck to everyone!!

Now this is a great idea! I've thought many times about trying to enter different elk calling contests that I've heard about but usually they are to far away. Right now I'm that guy who drives down I-5 and through town on the way to work every day just bugling and cow calling away. I've found that recording myself on my cell phone the first half of the drive and then listening to it the second half (and then comparing it to the sounds on the elknut CD),  a guy can really learn a lot and tweak his calling a bit. I thought I was a pretty decent caller before doing this, but now I realize how far I have to go. Anyway, I'm in on this contest. I do think that the ability to list the admissions anonymously, or at least the top ten so everyone can hear them would be great as well.

Wow this is going to be tuff. I have been recording myself and I sound like sheet! Well not that bad, I definitely know I need to tweak a few things and to trim down to a minute. 20 seconds for each is tuff, I'll have to pick and choose what type of calls I'm going to use with in that 20 seconds. This sure does allow me to practice, practice and practice, if I don't get any thing out of this at least I had a lot of practice!!

WORKFLOW:

I went ahead and did this two different ways:

1)I made a video and then transferred it to YouTube.  You can than use many online converters to convert the Youtube video to an .mp3 (google search).  What you can do is enter in the letters pwn right after the www. when watching the video and hit enter.  This will take you to a screen where all the available converters that YouTube supports are.  I used OnlineConverter.  Otherwise you can go to google and search for "youtube to mp3 converter" and use one of your choice.

2)I also used a program called Free Video Converter.  Here, you can convert any video to an .mp3 directly (It must be downloaded to your computer though).

I also advise that everyone uses a 256 kbps transfer to make sure that they are getting the highest audio quality.  Then just email me the .mp3 file with your name and user name attached.

If I sit right and eat lots of trail snacks,  I can make some interesting cow muaws (does that count)...sometimes some bull grunts too if I force it just right.  I better start powering up on the beans because trail mix's aren't digested until september.  It could be a bad idea, normally realized after the attempt. :chuckle:

I hear he's planning on being the first professional caller to use the Terminator bugle. Apparently his technique allows him to sound unlike the 3.1 million other hunters that use the same call but don't sound anything like a real bull. ;)
