These are unfair questions!!! :) :)

I am so biased there really is only one good answer...

Take the scope off and put a peep sight back on + Western Kit ignition system...

And you have the best... It will shoot most any combination you put down the barrel...

But remember I am BIASED - totally

I just ordered the 50 cal Knight Disc Extreme today. Not sure how much you want to spend but I found them at Gander Mtn for $460 w/ free shipping. Coupon code= 5OFFGANDER is good for $40 off price of $499.

I ended up buying from the factory direct cuz I wanted to be sure I got the "Western Edition Ignition". I also bought the 209 Ignition cuz I hunt in New Mexico.

I've had great luck w/ my Knight MK-85 but figured it was time to upgrade.

everyone always talks crap about traditions vorteks but I love them, My wife, father, and I all have one and have never once had a mis fire.  keep them clean and change the musket breech out for a number 11 and you'll never have a problem.

Accurate out to 200 yards, dropped my bull at 150 yards last year no problem.

I really like my cva elkhorn and tc black diamond xr. They have both been great guns but I hunt more with the cva now days because I really like the bolt action on it.

I have had a vortek and took it back. I was shooting it for the first time and had the gun go off sitting in the sled without me touching it. Just sitting on the bench. Lucky for me it was in a led sled and that saved me. It would have hurt me if it was not in the sled. There has been plenty of people out there that have had this happen and tons of people that have had tons of problem with miss fires. More then a few people on this site even. It seems like about half of them work great, the other half cause problems and can be dangerous like the one I had.

No, I sold the Black Diamond I had and kepy my sidelock, a Lyman.

Will be hunting elk with it this year, and possibly deer if I decide to buy the multi-season tag.

Which one?

But probably not... I have a White Lightening coming and if it does what I hope it will do - I may be moving a MK but not a DISC.

I have owned cva, traditions, winchester.   They are all made by the same company and they are not made in the usa.  They are built cheap and feel cheap when you are holding one. To each there own.  If you go with the knight you will not have to end up buying two or three until you find the one you finally like. just my  :twocents:

My X-150 was made in Spain and is as solid as they come..... Very easy to maintain along with accuracy that I've never had with any others...... My Dad has a Knight..... That's all I can say about it....    :chuckle:

I love my TC Black Diamond XTR in .50cal.  That thing is AWESOME!  I have killed 2 deer passed the 150yd mark.  One at 165 and one at 151.  (The 151 is still passed 150 right  :chuckle: )  Not sure if they still make them.  If they don't you can't go wrong with a Knight.  Made in the USA and a very quality piece of equipment.  For your son I would recommend the Knight Wolverine.  It wont break the bank and my family has killed dozens of animals with this weapon.  Depending on how young he is the Little Horn is also a good gun.  Whatever you get make sure that it has a 1:28" twist.  Much more accurate and you can shoot almost any modern muzzle loader bullet out there.

With the Knight Extreme, how does its ease of cleaning compare with the Remington?  Thats the only front stuffer that I have experience with....

To be honest with you it is about the same when using a cap for ignition.  The breech is going to get dirty.  The bolt cleaning and spring maintenance is almost non-existant with the Knight bolt and it comes apart with no special tools.

Now I am a real fan of the Knight but again being honest if you have a Rem 700 ML in good condition shooting caps - I do not know if you are making a huge leap forward with the Extreme. BUT, if you were to go to 209 ignition - that would be a very different story.

I have two Knight Bighorns (I loved the first so much I bought a backup).  I have not shot the Disc Extreme but from Sabotloader's reviews I don't think you can go wrong with that either.  The Knight is a well built and accurate muzzleloader that is made in the USA.

I have also read numerous posts about the Traditions Vortek being garbage but I love mine.  Mosts of the posts against this muzzy seems to be that they had a tendency to go off when you would shut the breach.  When I called the company because I had a friend that also had one but had the NW edition (#11 cap) vs. my NW Magnum Edition (musket cap) and he wanted to switch the plug over to a musket cap.  The company adimately pleeded for him not to do this because even though the threads are the same and they look the same there is evidently a 300th of an inch difference in the length and they are not interchangable.  This is why they have been going off.  I am a guy and by nature I am normally against reading the instructions but they clearly state in the instructions when you buy this gun that they shoot only the type of cap that comes with the gun.  If you buy the NW Magnum edition I don't think you can go wrong.  I am a Knight fan as well but I like the feel of this gun and the ease of cleaning that if presents.  I have been shooting a 300 grain powerbelt pushed by 100 grain  Pirodex pellets and have had great accuracy.   :hello:

Knight Disk Extreme. These are at 100yds with standard open sights. .50/.44 hornady xtp sabots with 100gr triple 7 and musket caps. Bottom group is 1 1/2", top is 1 3/8". I shoot at a big dot at 100 so I can actually see it!! I am really curious to see what this will do with a scope!!

I've shot and or owned, remington, lyman, TC (a few models), Knight (a few models), CVA, and some no name european kit gun like a CVA. Maybe a few more that I dont remember.

Curently run a Knight Wolverine with a thumbhole stock. I've had it for years and dont have any plans to change. I've got the regular stock for it as well.

It took me alot of years to finaly get to Knight. Felt pretty dumb about it too since for the entire time my father in law hunted right beside me with an original Bighorn. I borrowed it for a late season cow hunt after my TC Hawken stock couldnt handle the swelling from being rain soaked for days on end. I shot my cow with it. Then promptly went and bought my own.

Slow learner I guess!!

Another sidelock guy here.  I've got a late '60's model TC Hawken that has a .50 cal Green Mountain LRH barrel on it.  1:28" and incredible accuracy with heavy conicals and sabots with the right charges.  Now, I don't wear a buckskin jacket with fringe - but the newer "plastic fantastics" just don't do it for me for when we're talking about a muzzleloader.  I'd put my gun up against anybodys for groups and accuracy at 100 yds.  You don't need to spend a a bunch of money on the newest and greatest in-line... just get an old TC Hawken with nice wood and good trigger/sidelock, put a new Green Mountain LRH barrel on it and you're good to go.

I own a Remmington 700ML.  They dont make them anymore and it does a good job but I dont think it is the best.  The best is probably the White gun.  dont know for sure.  They are a specialty gun with there own different calibers if I am correct.  If I was to get a new gun I would get a Knight hands down.  They have the best barrel for a factory gun ever made.  My buddy has one and it is the most accurate gun I have ever seen.  The gun is really long and a pain to haul around but when it comes to muzzleloading accuracy is everything and his and his brothers can outshoot my Remmington any day of the week.  But I will stick to my Remmington due to the fact it is lighter and shorter and accurate good enough for me up to 100 yards and I dont feel anyone should be shooting much farther out than that without a scope.  When your front pin is covering half of the animal than you ought to think twice before pulling the trigger and wounding it.  Just a few random thoughts from someone who likes to chase animals around in the fall.
