I drew an archery bull tag for the Toutle unit and I am just trying to get any input that anyone might give me. I have never shot an elk before, havent really hunted them much. Any advice??
-
Practice, practice, practice and get a good caller to hunt with you and you will be fine.
-
hope for cool weather. had the same tag last year and it isn't a gimme. passed on two spikes. stalked on two four points, blew a chance at a third four point, and later ate my tag. I hunted hard for ten days.
-
Yeah, a good caller and you'll be in lots of action, no shortage of bulls in there. Just pray that Weco has it open from fire danger during your hunt.
-
I'll pm u...
-
There you go, convince Nimrod to call for ya! You'll get one.
-
hope for cooler weather than last year
-
Nimrod, I drew a Toutle tag, do you care to share any other info? :dunno: Thanks in advance....

Get some maps of the unit and start scounting. Lots of elk in the unit. Had four legal bulls on my camera yesterday. Put in the effort and there will be no prob. Would call for ya but we drew two margret tags. We will be busy. Can get into the off spirt mt highway.

Took the family for a drive today. All Weco of course is locked up right now but we went up in the Toutle state land. Drove up the 4200 up to what we locals call the 5 way were the 3000 meets up, drove up to the snow line then turned around and drove the 3000 Toutle, Loowit border back, seen one very nice branched bull in the road, went another mile and seen two nice branched bulls together in the road, took the 2700 back to the 4200 and had another herd of about 15 down the road that split before I could tell if there were any bulls. Seen two branched bucks, one spike buck, three does, and another lone cow. Just letting you know so if Weco locks it up during your hunt you have this option.

Scout your a$$ off. Pattern the animals, so you know where to be when opening day comes around. Make sure you take a good shot. Remember the true work starts after you kill an elk, packing it out.

It is any bull, so any bull would be legal..ha ha!
-
That would make it six legal bulls. Thanks for the reminder

its 5 corners not 5 way lol but realy in my opinion the better bulls are going to be way up toward the mtn,all inbetween "the old 4100 rd" and the 3000...this area is going to be alil harder to hunt but its a mess down below with all the other peaple..if you get a good caller behind ya you should be able to have a chance at a 250 inch bull...maybe even get to see a 300 if your lucky(yes there is 300 inchers in the toutle)
stay away from easy areas ! theres lots of poaching up there

No no no its the 5 WAY, lol you must not be a local (joking) no thats some good advice, only thing I could add is the bulls up there get messed with a lot by people that don't know how to call, I can't call worth a bucket of ____ so I don't mess with them, its just what I hear. Like he said a good caller and you'll be fine. It's not your best option up there, but a option and always open for scouting. I did see the single biggest bull I ever seen in the area out of Margaret, Loowit, etc up where he speaks of about 15 years ago up past the 5 way on the Toutle side of the 3000 so they are up there. I think we are talking to ourselves on this thread however.

Was down there Fri night & Sat. saw a few, too much snow still on the 3000...trying to relearn the area, had the tag 9 years ago. I possibly will be on this hunt alone. I can call good if anyone else has the tag and might want to trade off trying to call in bulls for each other, or anyone who doesnt archery hunt wants to call for me.. Any info on the area would be greatly appreciated, please PM. Thanks! Sean

Yeah , 1 out of 500 bulls maybee :chuckle:
-
Yeah maybe. Always ask for pictures of all the 300" bulls KILLED in the toutle. Every year.
Toutle is a fun archery hunt, ton of bulls. Hopefully Weyco will allow walk-in this year even if the woods do close up for fire danger. But at least a guy can hunt the late season if you get closed out for fire danger in the early and in the late the gates will be open so you can hunt the whole unit.
-
Yeah, I know that there might be only 1- 300" bull in the whole unit, so I'd just like to get a nice bull and have a good hunt. Big thing is staying away from everyone else. Id rather hunt 1 bull by myself then hunt 10 bulls with 20 others doing the same thing.
-
I was down there on sat and seen two really nice bulls. I dont think they will ever get to thhe 300 mark but good shooter bulls for sure. We ended up seeing a total of 9 branched antler bulls. A little advice we would have seen 0 if we stayed in the truck.
-
ive hunted that unit im very familiar with that unit. lots of elk in there. fire danger is usually a problem with that tag. if you put some miles on your boots you should not have a problem filling that tag. i live about 20 minutes from there. good luck make sure and post pictures
-
throttlejocky20 , you didnt happen to have black Toyota/Nissan with a bunch of tool boxes in the back did you? :chuckle:
-
I drew the cow tag, and will be down there scouting through out the summer.I would be glad to share info or team up.

Grey Nissan Titan.

I was up tueseday for first time. Wow lots a elk! We saw dozen bulls 2 were spikes and about 40 cows total. Roads a little confusing with weyco land mixed in there and gates. Still learning. Wish snow was melted!

If you want a reference for what an above average good Bull for Toutle looks like; look for the Toutle thread from last year and see Coweemanslayers bull he killed (I believe that was his name) anyways that was a good Toutle Bull, typically you'll run into a bunch of 5's though. Regardless of size, I think you'll have a fun hunt full of action.
-
You will have a lot of fun... I helped a buddy down there last year on his muzzleloader cow tag. He hunted one day and was done. Hint: Get our of your truck.
-
The unit is in my back yard, all I can say scout but when the season starts you need to be in the timber. The one thing that is going to work is calling, BUT DON'T OVER CALL. you are going to have lots of hunters in the woods at that time, all the cow and bull tags. the deeper you go the better you are going to be.If you need a place to camp I am right off the 4100 road and am offering camping this year.

How much money you want to camp. And is the shower in the house part of the deal! :chuckle: :chuckle:
