Title: Margaret bull
Post by: Zlebaron on June 10, 2012, 10:40:47 PM
I got drawn for the Margaret bull tag in september. I am very stoked. I have a friend that got drawn for the tag and I will be quizzing him but would appreciate all the info I can get.

Should be a pretty easy hunt unless it gets shut down for fire danger.  I had a muzzy cow tag in there last year.  And I saw and heard a lot of bulls.  A couple I saw were pretty nice.  Maybe 270".  The one problem with the margaret unit is that dang near the whole unit is a jack fir patch.
Good luck and welcome to the site.  I hope you stick around.  :hello:

Be careful when you shoot your bull, there might be 2 or 3 other elk standing behind it! I was in there with a good friend last year for his cow hunt and we covered a lot of ground, didn't see an elk for a long time but once we found them they were in a huge herd. He killed his cow just up from the river by the winston boundry. Sept. should be very fun in there, good luck.

:yeah: On Bulls along the Green   I haven't been down there for a while but we always ran into bulls along the Green / Winston Boundary.  Always saw sign up around the Dinosaur Swamp too. :twocents:

Its never EASY to get an elk with a bow. Be prepared. My advice is to cover ground and be ready at all times. I had a cow tag in there in 07 and had many chances blown due to  not being ready. Great learning experience. Goodluck! I wanted that tag so since another Huntwa member got it, I better be seeing some pictures come september while I am hunting the well pressured public land nearby  :chuckle:

He drew the rifle tag.  Should be a slam dunk.

:yeah: slam dunk for sure, can't you hunt the general season dates with that permit also, Sept and Nov?

Problem now is access. Weyco has sold off the really good elk country by the Hwy and the High Lakes.  Heard the developer is going to charge for hunting access. The next chunk across from Castle Lk. Viewpoint is also sold with gates posted No Trespassing.  This blocks most access from the Hwy.  So now you have to hope/beg/pray that King Weyerhaeusr has some Green River Access open. Which means pray for rain in Sept.

I also heard that the best hunting grounds got sold. I am hoping I still will have access on the 26

:yike:That is the piece they sold?  :bash: :bash: :bash: That was one of the best elk hunting spots in the unit in my opinion. I had a little spot i hunted in there that was only a couple miles big and I would be in elk all day long every day

Pretty much every road east of the bear creek road along the highway up to coldwater is posted no trespassing.  When I was up there last november the bear creek road was closed though, there was alot of snow melting and the bear creek road was washing out.

Bear Crk is still Weyco. (for now) at the west side of Elk Rock.  Maratta Crk. SOLD.  Hanaford-Forest-Elk -Fawn  Tradedollar  Lakes SOLD & SUBDIVIDED.  Mount Margaret Access via Minnie Peak SOLD  Shultz Crk. SOLD.  And the single best elk area in the state IMHO (for # elk) Miner's Creek SOLD.  Elk Rock would be next.

After you cross the big steel bridge go up the hill a bit and take the first road on the left then right, go up to where ya cross a little bridge and the road "y's" and go left. Go up the hill and take the left fork and nose around in there. Saw ton's of rub trees in there last year where I got a cow. Good luck

I have the bull tag for archery. I helped a friend kill his cow in there last year access was not nearly as difficult as some are making it sound. The areas up high that would benefit most rifle hunters with all the nobles was posted private but there is still plenty of area to hunt and access was not a problem unless they have sold a bunch more since November, if that's the case then I'll eat my words. It is not a slam dunk easy hunt but there is still a lot of elk there if you get out of the truck, there aren't hardly any clear cuts but they do a good job thinning the timber there, it's all about 30 years old, mostly thinned and very hunt able. I would be more than willing to share my info since I will be in there before you with my bow.

Shot my bull at the end of the 3100 rd last season. Lots of elk up in that area.

There is still plenty of access in to the western half of the unit and the north side.  It's just not as good of an area as the area they sold up by the lakes and miners creek.  The high lakes and the area surrounding them was the best part of that unit, that's all.

I had a Muzzy cow tag last year and went on a modern cow hunt in there. I saw the same bull (nice 5 X5) each time I was in there. I saw him on the 2500 rd in the deep and nasty and on either side of the road. In fact we had pulled over to check maps and get a drink(during the modern season) he tried to cross the road in front of us.....once he saw us out of the SUV he bolted back into the woods. Sorry, I couldn't tell you what he might score, but if I had the tag when I saw him, he would be next to the drinks in the SUV.

Good luck with your hunt.

The 3100 is where I got my cow last year not more than a mile or so back in there. Just across the Hoffstadt Bridge. You can hunt both sides of the hiway up to the bridge.

Just out of curiosity how many points did you have in the drawing for this tag?
