So this year i drew my quality bull for the Mill Creek Watershed and my branch bull for Rimrock. I have some redemption from two years back when i drew a bull tag and on opening day of my hunt i caught a glimpse of this bull a hour before quiting time. Taking a stab at it i would say this bull would go 345 - 355. i hunted him every day of the season in the rain the fog and snow storms I wanted to harvest that bull more then anything but he never presented a ethical shot. I seen this bull last year and watched him for a hour from 300 yards away and seen why this bull lived to be as big as he is. I just got word from a buddie that this bull is still alive and i know its him cause both of his ears are split So this year is my redemption year up RIMROCK.

Good luck on your hunt. I have always enjoyed hutning up there. I have not spent a ton of time there but have spent some and always liked it up there.

You're going to hunt Rimrock instead of the Mill Creek Watershed? :dunno:
-
Yea I would like to settel the score. I hunted that bull 12 day straight from dark to dark and he got the best of me. when i got back home that bull was all i could think about and looking back at it all i finally realized the one and only way you could kill that bull and now knowing he still lives. I got to try. I seen him last year and watched him for a hour with my uncle we would say that bull would be around 365 give or take. He was a big 7x7. the blondest bull ive ever seen even his neck main was blonder then normal and both ears split. If i was to go hunt the watershed i would be going solo and ive never been up in the area. Heard a lot about it it goods and bads. But hunting to me is having a great time and spending it with your buds and family. If i went to the watershed solo i don't think i would have any fun pulse theres many more year to come and kill a big bull in the watershed is one my bucket list.

I agree 100% about being with friends and family it makes the hunt that much better in the end! And its better to go after a bull you have seen many times in a area you know pretty well then a unit.you have never hunted before. Goodluck!
-
Isn't the watershed hunt a rut hunt :dunno:
-
Rimrock over the watershed. Not many people would make that choice but it sounds like you have your reasons. Good luck!
-
good luck to ya i hope you kill old split-ear. keep us all posted on how your hunt went.. ps i put in for the shed tag with 13pts and didnt get it. lovely system we have.
-
No the Watershed is not a rut hunt. It opens the same day as spike but you get to hunt in a area that only permit holders can access so you dint have every swinging dick walking around with a gun messing up your hunt. Yea we do have a Ward system i drew a branch bull tag two years ago for rimrock with 13 points and i get drawn this year for the same hunt with 2 point then to top it off i allso draw quality bull with 15 points. And my. hunts are at the same time but at Rimrock i get to start five days sooner
-
Good luck
-
I'd rather have friends to keep me company and of course, hauling elk quarters.
-
good luck i drew a archery rimrock quality ellk ill make sure if i see a blonde 7x7 to leave it for ya :chuckle:
-
I would hunt rimrock for those first 5 days then head to the shed for its opener.
-
Pullnpray if you get that bull in you sights put your pin on him and let it fly. I know i would but i dint think you would be able to get that close to him. Not saying that your not a good archery hunter its just the way that he sits him self. Ive watched this bull and seen a few hunter three draws over heading up into the canyon and watched that bull sneak off. As soon as he hears something out of the norm hes out of their. If i get a shot at him i think it will a 500 yard shot. But who knows everyone can get lucky once but the best of luck to you i have been seeing better quality bulls in there the last few years.
-
yes rimrock has produced some quality elk over the last few years, my cousin got one that scored just under 350 it was a monster, hopefully the ruts falls into my hunting period it would make hunting a hell of a lot easier.. if i see anything worth while i msg you.. im planing on putting out a few extra trail cams this year.
-
I would do the Rimrock hunt as well....
-
Sounds like rimrock is your best bet, to bad you can't have them save te watershed tag till next year ; )
Go where you got the best chance to get your elk and will have the most fun!
-
There are four of us out of are hunting party that drew branch bull tags for Rimrock. If everything goes well i plan on having my tag filled before the opener of spike season then being a pack bitch for the other guys that show up.
-
Take along lots of vasiline with you :chuckle:
-
Allways do and baby wipes.
-
Situations like this is why I dislike the new system tons of guys that would love to have either tag and one will be going to waste for sure. I say do the hunt you want the most.
-
Sounds like a hell of a bull good luck to ya.. I also drew a rimrock modern bull tag. Just have to start scouting to find a bull like the one you speak of
-
Their up there just got to find them. My buddie pulled a 330 bull out of Rimrock last year with a modern tag.
-
Found out i need to pick up another 12x14x5 wall tent pulled mine out and it was coverd in mold. Anyone getting rid of one?
-
Sound like we need to change this and get F&G to take back the tag we don't want and give it to an unsuccessful draw persons in an alternate draw.
The alternate draw hunter would have to use his points for that catergory but the hunter that drew both elk or deer tags could keep his points for the turned in tag. Seems like a no brainer to me. >:(
-
And they could charge $15 per application for the leftover/give back draw. If they can make it into a money maker then they might get onboard!
-
I drew a quality bull and any bull tag this year, only can harvest one
-
Good luck on your hunt! I got a bull on my mind from last year and a tag for the area this year. No verification on his status though. Yet he's still cost me some zzz's.
-

You had to know you had a chance of drawing both right? Which quality bull did you draw and which bull tag will go to waste? Welcome to the site by the way, there is a ton of info on here.

:yeah: :yeah:I think in the future the state will realize the money potential in having a second draw like Idaho has, it's a damn shame that a good amount of some tags will go to waste.
-
I agree with most guys here, go to the area you are most familiar with and hunt with your family and friends. I don't understand why the state doesnt consider a preference point system? Unless I am missing something it seems like the best way to manage it. The guys with the points get the tags! If you only have a few points you know you have wait...
