First season in WA hunting, and I was wondering if you don't fill a tag for archery can you buy another license for the modern firearm season?
I moved from WI so the rules here are much different, I reviewed the big game regs but I didn't see if you could hunt both seasons if un-successful.
Thanks for the help.

In this state you have to chose your weapon. You can then only hunt seasons designated for that weapon.
You can apply for multi-season permit in the spring. If drawn you can hunt all hte seasons. Rifle, bow and muzz.
-
Once you buy one, thats it for the year...whether it is filled or not. Welcome to WA, happy hunting! ;)
-
Man. Well makes ya work harder I suppose.
So is early and late archery separated then?
Jez, I hope not.
-
If you buy a deer tag, you can hunt both the late and early hunts of that weapon type, during the respective dates, until the tag is filled or the season ends.

Thanks for the information guys, I think the WDFW is probably sick of fielding all of my questions I'll try to minimize them here as well.
My plan was to get a Deer archery, so I guess it will be nice to have the early and late, so I won't feel to dejected when sept 30th rolls around and i'm empty handed.
That is really a night and day difference. Back in WI you had to fill a doe tag before you got a buck tag, some counties had to clear two doe tags. And in CWD zones they would give as many tags to anyone as they had freezer room.
Just means I gotta scout more.
Thanks for the help all, I really appreciate it.

Feel free to ask man, we dont mind helping. I got the multi season permit for deer this year (special draw) so I am looking forward to a little bow action...since I normally hunt modern firearm for deerskies with the fam....
Take pics! As you can tell...we're fiends for em on here.

One more thing, i've read through the WDFW regs and I can't find it.
Can you purchase a deer license after the season starts? I ask because in Wisconsin you couldn't purchase a turkey tag after the season started for your unit.
Just wanna make sure, in case I have to buy it early. I become a resident on the 30th so I just want to cross my T's and dot my I's.
Thanks, Ellsworth

Just make sure to check the regs for the area you're hunting.
Not all the same area's that are open for the early hunt are also open for the late hunt. Also, some areas have different restrictions during the early hunt vs. the late hunt.
You'll have PLENTY of time to harvest your deer within the archery season...
One of the major reasons I archery hunt deer in this state is because it gives me PLENTY of weekends to procrastinate.... ;)
Of course, the past couple years they have shut my favorite unit down for the late hunt...oh well!

Don't worry about WDFW. Heaven knows we pay em enough money, the least they can do is be there to answer our questions. ALL of our questions.
If they don't like it, SIMPLIFY the regs.
Not only are the regs complex, but you have to read them closely every year to make sure nothing has changed from the prior year....they will not hesitate to write any tickets should we honestly miss something...
As others have said, welcome to hunting Washington...

AMEN BROTHER! It seems the the rules change from this tree, to that rock, to that road, to that stream. :bash:
BTW Ellsworth, since you're new to Washington hunting regs, make sure if you go hunting with a firearm that if it is a rifle, shotgun, or handgun that it IS COMPLETLY UNLOADED including magazine and Thunder stick must be uncapped before you store it in your vehicle. Don't even set your loaded weapons on the tailgate or lean it up against the tire. That is considered a loaded weapon in your vehicle and that is a big fat ticket. And you will most likely run into a LEO some time during the season. Good luck this year! :hello:

Lol, thanks for the heads up.
In WI we couldn't have ANY weapon in a vehicle unless unloaded and COMPLETELY cased, even unzipped weapon cases would yield a ticket.
I can't believe you can have a gun here in a vehicle without a case.

Geez! Harsh!!
Where you from in WI? Mom grew up in Milwaukee, and her sis lives in Wauwautosa (sp?). Also have relatives in Green bay and Madison. Milwakee is a cool city, in fact of all the big cities I've been to I like it the best. Like the lingo too. Okie Dokie cracks me up the most.

I was born and raised on the west side of Madison, but at 18, I moved out to Platteville, on the west side of the state for college. Ural environment, driftless area with no glaciation, so hunting was abundant and fly fishing was the rule.
It just seemed second nature to move out here for grad school, I became more of the rule here instead of the exception. Back in WI there were a lot more hippies and spin fisherman then Cheney.
I know it's probably because of being in a ural town here in WA, but I feel the outdoor lifestyle is more welcomed here, and there are a lot more fly fisherman.
Of course I haven't been to seattle yet..lol
I like millwaukee a little to big for me though, tended to get lost everytime. Madison was very liberal, too much, but the liberal atmosphere did make for great food and diversity.
Eventually I'll get back out there to do some more hunting.

Can someone explain to this new resident of Washington the rational behind choosing your weapon and having to stick with. I can speculate, but a knowledgeable answer would better satisfy my curiosity. Also why the lapse in hunting time at end of oct through the beginning of November. i see elk the first through the 10th of Nov. but for deer? The rut for blacktails is approximately when? Maybe a little help so i don't have to try figure out for myself please. Would appreciate any input
